There isn't a problem other than people's perceptions of what things should cost that they can't buy elsewhere.

It's pretty clear to me. The Radeon Pro 580 is a re-branded RX580. That card directly competes with nVidia's GTX 1060 6gb. That's an entry level card for 1080p gaming. Those cards are not designed for 1440p and 4k resolutions. For 700 bucks I wouldn't call that a bargain. Now if it had a Vega 56, or 64 that would be different, because those chips compete with the high end 1070/1080 cards, but fail to compete against Nvidia's flagship 1080ti.

In the Windows realm the total flops are usually higher than nVidia cards, but they still preform lower in overall game and synthetic benchmarks. For example the Vega 64 has a peak of 12.6 GFLOPS, but gets destroyed by a 1080ti with 11.3. It's about equal to a 1080, which is about 8.9 GFLOPS.
Yeah if I were a gamer I’d be running Windows and want an nVIDIA card.

Wow! That was quick. Thanks.

Uhh oh, did they forget to change it from "RX580" to "Radeon PRO 580"? No custom bios?:p:D

If you're buying this for client work, $700 is nothing so even if it gets upgraded next year, it's only $700 - like buyng a SSD (both a writeoff) - the fact that Apple help create an integrated unit that is supported by MacOS is important and worth the few hundred bucks extra.

This has been debunked. 40Gb/s is plenty of bandwidth to not bottleneck even high-end GPUs.

Where has it been debunked? There isn't even enough 1-way bandwidth for a higher end card, let alone both ways.

Here's an article on AI where they did some testing:
https://appleinsider.com/articles/1...ssive-but-six-more-months-will-make-it-better

But, I know there was another article that measured the loss under various conditions and TB port types. TB3 is *just* enough bandwidth not to limit most GPUs too heavily.

And please, I don't think you understand the "pro" market. Pro does not mean "Pro gamer" or "Pro IT", these devices are intended for people whose professions have nothing to do with upgrading components to get a few more fps.

Note, while I agree in terms of FPS, pros do want to upgrade a GPU if it will shave time off a preview or rendering. Saving time is to pros what FPS is to gaming, in a way.

BUT, as you say, they'd just buy the new Blackmagic v2 with XYZ card in it a year from now (assuming people like Blackmagic continue to make newer, better models). Then this one gets moved to another machine or sold/put in storage.

Are you expecting a Vega card or something? The card alone would cost more than this.
No, it's not January anymore, we're in July now, and you can get a Vega 56 for $480. I'm sure a manufacturer would be able to get them direct for even less.

You're being deliberately misleading. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...61&cm_re=radeon_rx_580-_-14-125-961-_-Product

The markup is $440 using the above link; I hope you don't seriously expect people to believe that a manufacturer is going to go and buy the most expensive variety they can find on Newegg (which isn't even sold by Newegg, but a third party). That's not the actual cost of a Radeon 580.

What's also interesting is the Vega lineup is not really geared towards mainstream, just like the Nvidia Titan lineup. They're more for deep learning, special purpose. I guess you could say the "semi-pro" lineup before the Quadros and FirePros.

Hmm, could the point be HAVING an external video card? I don't know...isn't that what you're buying here? The hyperbole around here is deep.
This isn't hyperbole. It's the most ridiculous apple promoted crap I have seen. Sure a laptop and phone can't be upgraded because you are trading thinness but the point of an external GPU is so you can upgrade it.

It will but you will never get a frame-rate faster than the native rate of the built in.

I don’t understand, are you saying you do not utilize the card when running 3d software (or even playing games) on an external monitor?

Come oooon, Apple, don't be so harsh with NVIDIA. Bring back your official support to NVIDIA!!! We want NVIDIA. We want Vulkan. We want OpenGL. We want OpenCL. We want CUDA. We don't want Metal. We don't want your departure from the standards that you used to support. Period.
