It's bizarre to see everyone here claiming the iPod touch has no market. I used different iPod touches from 2008 until 2017 as my primary device, and now I have a prepaid carrier iPhone 6. Wifi makes the costs of data cheaper for people that don't need ridiculous amounts of data (seriously, how does anyone use more than like 5 GB in a month?). Loads more places have public wifi than 10 years ago, so the iPod touch is much more useful than it was back then too. It's also important to note that I still can't stand the iPhone 6's massive screen compared to the 4" iPod touch. Apple really had the best screen size in the 4" devices.

Honestly, if it weren't for Pokémon Go, I'd probably still be using an iPod touch as my main device. :p

That said, my 6th gen iPod touch's battery plummeted after about 2 years of having it, so I really hope the new processor in the 7th gen one gets better battery life after it's been worn out some.

Battery was horrible right out of the box on the 6th gen touch.

I came here for the toilet test

btw Apple needed to either discontinue or upgrade the touch in order to drop A8 devices in iOS 13

It has been said before that iOS 13 might not support the iPhone SE due to its screen size, but since the new iPod touch has the same screen size and will surely support iOS 13, that shouldn't be an issue.
Given the A10 chip inside and the specific release time, I’d bet that iOS 13 won’t support anything with less than an A10 chip. The iPod touch was the only device sold with less than an A10. Now the full current model lineup is A10 or newer to ensure that all devices sold currently will get the iOS 13 upgrade. Exception: HomePod (A8), but I’m not sure that’s relevant since it doesn’t run full iOS and its derivative thereof doesn’t necessarily share a base with iOS 13.

i'm sorry but they need to bring back some type of old school Ipod. I would never take a device with a glass screen on a workout especially so bulky. I'm sure this works for so people but it's not for everyone.

Agreed. I still use my original click-wheel iPod (2006) for music. I replaced the original 80GB spinning drive with an iFlash adapter with a 256GB CF card. It's fast, and I get great battery life. I'm so use to using a click-wheel that I can do it without even looking at the screen. IMO, it's the best design ever for pure music listening.

For the average person that has other Apple devices like an iPhone or iPad, you're probably not going to want to pick up an iPod touch unless you have a specific use case for it, such as listening to music with wired headphones while at the gym or something. Most people aren't going to have a use for an iPod touch over an iPhone, which is likely why it received only a modest processor update

Or if you (like me) want to run the latest iOS Developer Beta, without risking one of the main iOS devices.

I hate this short sighted attitude. There are TONS of reasons to have a dedicated iPod. Not everyone wants to risk their $1500 phone in a sweat and metal filled gym. Not everyone wants to use wireless. Not everyone wants to store their music on their phone and kill the battery during their workout. Not everyone wants to be interrupted by a phone call during their workout.

I agree, but most of the things you mentioned can be achieved on a smartphone by switching features on/off, and almost everyone has one already. I can see this being a great introduction device for kids and teens, but past that I don't see how this is better than a SE for most people.

I posted this in another thread, where I read about some US politician being found with multiple iPod touches which he used to communicate with others using the signal app.

It doesn’t have a cellular chip that is constantly trying to ping for a cell tower, so in a sense, what many view as a drawback is actually a plus for them.

I am not sure this is exactly great press for Apple (your device being used to evade surveillance by law enforcement), but it does go to show that one man’s limitation may well be another man’s advantage.

Honestly, if it had Touch ID and a better battery I would actually replace my iPhone SE.

It is a nice iPod, even if it could have been a lot better, the problem is in the price, the modest update does not advocate for the price tag.
From a developer's perspective, it's idiotic to still offer a 4" screen.

So much for standards.
Apple and Standard in tha same sentence do not work well...

Heck their current iPhone does not even plug to their current Laptop... talk about standard.

USB-C on iPad Lightning on iPhones.... it has been like that forever, they even insisted with proprietary video connector for years!

I have always thought iPod touch nails it in terms of feel and thickness. It is only a small difference compare to thinnest iPhone, which I believe is the iPhone 6 at 6.7mm, but the iPod touch at 6.1mm felt so much better. And the iPad Pro at 5.5mm.

I think somewhere between that range is the goal, but unless battery improves we will have to live with thicker phones.

This update maybe related to support being dropped in iOS 13. I assume support for A8 will be dropped, which includes iPhone 6, iPad Air 2 (A8X, so hoping not). So really Apple installed the least CPU in this iPod that could receive 2 updates, iOS 13 & 14. I assume A10 will be dropped in two years in iOS 15 (Sep 2021).

A child will never go for an iPod touch when an iPad or iPhone is in the house ;)
I wish they released an iPod touch with the now standard iPhone sizes... I'd definitely consider moving back to it from the iPhone but perhaps that's why it will never happen!

So it may be an option for some people if it had touch ID and supported Apple Pay.

I could see it as being useful for teens to not have to carry their debit card around with them, so could be a music player, messaging device and payment device.

Perhaps, as this would be only useful outside the US only (do teens have debit cards in the US), Apple haven't built it for that market. Equally, contactless isn't as prevalent in the US yet.
