I just purchased the 128gb new iPod and also just got my power beats the day they were released. my 2015 iPod is a piece of crap! so I'm happy to get this new one. I never take my iPhone XS Max to the gym. I see others drop theirs and scream and what not! hell no! its safe and locked up and happy to use an iPod for the gym with my power beats! I just wish the screen was bigger at least do something different but its what it is.
I just wish they'd give me the spec's on the DAC that comes with this thing. It still has a phone jack, for crying out loud, so that is an issue for people that care about quality music reproduction - WHICH IS ALL THIS THING DOES. Don't care about wireless earbuds if I go buy an iPod. I want to know if my Sennheisers sound good with it; I want to know how much music it can hold; I want to know if it has enough screen feedback to select the tunes I want to play; I want to know if I can stream with it. Oh, and how much it costs relative to a phone with no headphone jack and no decent DAC. Those are the selling points for a music machine.

I still have the 2012 iPod touch which I never use, because it's so slow. But it's cute. It's so funny tho cuz it's from 2012 and I think of it as a somehow vintage device (and guess that's why I am keeping it), and then Apple releases new iPod touch in 2019 with the exact same design (I have the same blue one as the in the video). I kinda wish I could downgrade it to iOS 6.

But you need a bigger screen to get HD audio! o_O
I'm personally having trouble understanding the value of an iPod touch, because it just seems like a redundant device, which means you have another device to buy, carry, track, and maintain, without a significant benefit.

If you keep just one device (e.g., an iPhone vs. an iPod), the physical risk to the device can be mitigated with a case and/or armband, the wireless and cellular antenna can be turned off so no phone calls come through, you're only going to drain 6.7% of your battery listening to your music in an hour-long workout, which will be restored in about 15 mins with a car charger on your way to/from the gym.

The beauty of the iPhone is that it is a single, multi-purpose device, eliminating the need to carry and keep track of multiple devices.

I think the iPod touch may be good as a single device for people who do not ever want any cellular functionality, but if you ever want cellular functionality, there is no point to have both an iPhone and iPod touch.
I'm not saying Apple did a particularly good job of it, but the idea of producing a device specifically designed for playing and delivering music with high fidelity, while ditching phone calls, messaging, cameras, and video, doesn't seem far fetched for me. I'd like a device with great sound available through a great set of headphones - wired or otherwise - along with decent battery life and network connectivity. Oh, and for a price reflecting its merits sans phone and camera functions. There was a time when you associated music playback with high quality stereo systems, not your telephone. A fine iPod like device would be great for a portable music player, whether in the boonies or treading around the house while it is attached to a nice set of speakers.

I've looked over the specs carefully.

A used 7+ is a much better value !

AAPL offers $270 for a used 7+, so I'll assume that's the generally accepted (low-ball) Street Price.

There are four, & ONLY four, High-Perf iPhones, the 7+, 8+, XS, & XS Max.

For $270, OR thereabouts, one "could" obtain one of the four !

More DRAM, much better image sensors with Display P3 color space capture support, telephoto back camera, 7 Mpx front camera, 5.5" 1080p Display with Display P3 support !

NOT Rocket Science, NO comparison, the touch 7 is NOT good value !

NOT when compared to a used 7+ !

For those who don't know, the 2016 was the first true High-Perf iPhone AAPL ever made !

The X & XR don't qualify, AAPL didn't put enough DRAM in either ! ... they corrected the X by putting a pseudo 4 GB into the XS, and will very-likely correct the XR when they release the 2nd-Gen version in Sept (bumping it up to pseudo 4 GB as well).
Go for an LG V20 - better sound with 4 channel DAC to go with its phone jack, nice camera, phone functions, and all the stuff the 6+ (which I own) offers, along with a greatly reduced price as a 3 year old released phone.

A child will never go for an iPod touch when an iPad or iPhone is in the house ;)
I wish they released an iPod touch with the now standard iPhone sizes... I'd definitely consider moving back to it from the iPhone but perhaps that's why it will never happen!
Depends on whether the child takes after W.A. Mozart, Michelangelo, or Alexander Graham Bell. Each device has its strong points.

I also believe the dedicated music player market isn't dead. What bugged me to no end was Apple's impossibly lazy and expedient approach.

It's not optimised for music quality. It's not optimised for privacy. It's not optimised for user experience. It's not optimised for affordability.

And it sports the same archaic form factor since 2012. Since it uses neither TouchID nor FaceID, they could simply eliminate all bezels and create their very first truly all-screen device. Let's not forget, the iPod touch was the precursor design to the first iPhone. Or they could go back to the iPod Classic roots and tug a nostalgia heartstring.

Alas, no. This device is optimised for NOTHING AT ALL other than a quick profit fix for Tim Apple's spreadsheets.

Same fake hype they put out for the Homepod. Even kids are smart enough to choose something more versatile like an Amazon Fire HD 8 and it has micro SD card slot. The other use cases are niche.

I think you are discounting the network effect of the Apple ecosystem.

Taking into account family sharing, this iPod touch is going to be able to access every service the parents are subscribed to, including iMessage, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, news, as well as other games and apps which support said feature.

Your point reminds me of the same mistake people made when criticising the iPad mini against the nexus 7. You seem to know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Airpods.

Are you starting to see a trend here?

Airpods are garbage. If you like something that falls out of your ears and costs a fortune and has mediocre sound quality, Airpods are for you! But hey, it's Apple so the faithful will buy it NO MATTER WHAT.

So let's see, iPod Touch with 256GB plus Airpods and that gym workout costs you over $500 to listen to music....

Can I still buy a Sony walkman? Because that's horse crap to listen to digital in 2019. It should cost you about $30 total for that.

I love that they updated this. I use an iPod in my car for music. It is permanently connection via USB and sounds way better than Bluetooth from my iPhone. The old iPod touch was sllooooooowwwwwww

This is the reason why I bought the new iPod as well. I do not at all like having my phone tied up, I actually have a dedicated phone on a plan for music streaming. This will be a great addition to that as I can just leave it in my vehicle and always have my choice of music either streamed over Wi-Fi or through the library storage.

Dropping support to A8?

May be for all devices with only 1Gb of ram.

3rd demographics... music lovers with large library.

This device is a perfect "smart home remote".

I’m willing to believe about 99% of iPod touch users would never use that for a feature. If you think about it, the iPod touch is really meant to be that portable/small-er media device for a younger demographic that doesn’t have access to an iPhone yet. I think that’s why Apple is keeping this device around, because it’s not necessarily the most profitable device, but it does serve it’s purpose for someone like a teenager that wants to access music, videos, can use the camera, etc.

My Airpods don’t drop out of my ears, sound decent for what I use it to listen to, and I hardly call $200 every two years breaking the bank (especially when I managed to sell off my older pair of Airpods for a bit of extra cash).

I was talking about Apple Watch plus Airpods. I don’t know why you suddenly brought in the iPod touch, which amongst other things, still has the headphone jack, and comes with a pair of wired earbuds.

And of course I am not going to get all this gear just to exercise at the gym.

Let’s drop the straw man arguments. They are so unbecoming.

i'm sorry but they need to bring back some type of old school Ipod. I would never take a device with a glass screen on a workout especially so bulky. I'm sure this works for so people but it's not for everyone.
I still use my 6th gen (clip-on) iPod Nano at the gym .... but I do take my iPhone 8 along too.
My wish is that Apple bring back the 6th gen form factor Nano and include bluetooth.
I just find it quicker and easier to control the Nano.
I don't know... maybe I'm just being old school. I kinda like gadgety things too.

Although i understand the ipod touch is now a niche product, i still wish Apple had done something fun & exciting with it. I don’t think people use it as a music consumption device anymore. I think if Apple had rebranded it a gaming & or photography device that would have been better. Enlarged the screen. Slimmed the bezels. Given it some groundbreaking camera even more advanced & different than the iphone...that would have been so cool. Lol. Of course that didn’t happen. And probably never will. This may very well be the last of the ipod touches. Unless Apple uses the ipod touch to experiment with the folding technology instead of risking it on the iphone first. Perhaps some ipod touch ipad hybrid. I dunno.

Unless Apple does something different with the ipod touch, i think it will just wither & die. Even kids are getting hand me down iphones from their parents now. So this may well be the last of the ipod touch updates.

It's never going to happen, but if Apple included some high end DAP features such as balanced headphone jack, I will buy one.

Smartphone has long killed the low end digital camera and dedicated DAP. You'll find far more higher end cameras than low end models, and really only bought by enthusiasts. The same probably applies to dedicated DAPs. I started looking into one last year and was quite shocked to see one from Sony for over $3000. I ended up buying a Pioneer when it went on sale for $200 which was half of its MSRP. I love the sound quality, especially when used with my semi decent Sony cans with balanced input, but I hate the clunky interface. It's fine since I only use it when I get the occasional urge for max audio quality.

Apple watch with the HRM removed and replaced with a charging disc, and the band connector ends filled in. Reminds me of my first MP3 player - http://www.mp3newswire.net/graphics/panasonicSD80.jpg

I hate this short sighted attitude. There are TONS of reasons to have a dedicated iPod. Not everyone wants to risk their $1500 phone in a sweat and metal filled gym. Not everyone wants to use wireless. Not everyone wants to store their music on their phone and kill the battery during their workout. Not everyone wants to be interrupted by a phone call during their workout.
Each to their own but I disagree. An iPod is yet another 'thing' to sync, update, charge. No thanks. Sorry but at the gyms that I go to around the world, I'd say that 95%+ use bluetooth earphones now so cables aren't a worry. Battery consumption is not problems with iPhones for listening to music for that one hour gym session. If you don't want to be interrupted by a phone call, do the simple thing that I do every night, put it in flight mode. Not really a problem!
