Am I the only one who prefers the tapered design that went away with the M2 models? I think these MacBook Air are absolutely wonderful, but I did prefer the old design.
No, definitely not just you. I would buy the new one in a flash, if it were still like that. Without it, I might as well go for a Pro model, but I am not spending that much.

So my M1 carries on for now.

My 16” M4 Max MacBook Pro (128 GB ram, nano display and 8 TB SSD) also has Thunderbolt Five USB-C ports. Is quite a jump from my M1 Max 14” model with 64 GB Memory and 128 TB SSD.
Great computer. You guys see this is better than m4 MacBook Air !

My experience with the M series:

M1 is still good enough for most people.

The M3 and M4 have not been impressive leaps. Wait for the M5, which is right around the corner and will hopefully have Thunderbolt 5 standard.

The M5 will finally bring some noticeable improvements but don’t expect anything revolutionary until late 2026.
Yes, no need to replace an M1 model which is only 4 or 5 years old.

I have the M2 air with 16GB of RAM. It is much faster than I need, editing office docs and browsing the internet, I have never had any issues or slowdowns.

But I'm still thinking "ooooo, a faster M4 air with 32GB of RAM would be nice.."

It's like I have a Lamborghini, and I only use it to drive to the grocery store a few blocks from my house, but I'm thinking about buying the new Lamborghini that has a few more horsepower that I'll never need to use ever in my life..

If it’s any consolation, you are not alone with that thinking!

Sorry MacBook Pro is the best laptop…
Well, I think what was said in the video is that the MBA is the best laptop for "the masses". This of course includes the trade-offs of price for performance/features that many consumers might never use or appreciate. I agree the title of the video could have been better.

We have to remember that many folks use their laptops to do mail, messaging, browsing, productivity apps, and maybe downloading some business data to put into productivity apps. I don't believe the review was implying that the MBA is superior to the MBP from a technical or feature perspective.

I'm still using my 2021 14" MBP M1 Pro base model and it's doing absolutely amazing with everything I throw at it...gaming, large scale data science projects, work and grad school duties, etc...and it totally manhandles it all without breaking a sweat. The fact that the Air M4 is more powerful than my M1 Pro, niceties aside, the Air is definitely more than enough for the vast majority of folks. The price and the features you get are really an amazing value. I'll definitely be looking into the Air when the time comes to upgrade

I’m not sure I agree here. The M2 line up and the M3 Pro in particular weren’t exciting upgrades, but the M4 line has demonstrated notable improvement especially in CPU performance. Also, if you have the M4 Pro or MAX, you already have Thunderbolt 5.

I so prefer the iPad Pro over the MacBooks. I can do everything that I would do on a 13 or 15 inch laptop with my iPad. Then if I want to sit at a desk and work, the Mac mini (the old M2 Pro) is fine and dandy with its 512gb storage and 16gb memory with a 2TB ssd connected through thunderbolt.

You cant compare the max to a MBA, that’s apples to oranges. The price differential alone is more than double even on a moderately spec air.
MacBook Pro is the best computer... it doesn't means is the best computer for you or many people !!

Yes, each has a good niche for doing various things. For me though I'd prefer to just go with a single device that manages the best of both worlds. The iPad or the mac mini may excel over a MacBook for some things but not enough for me to warrant two different devices. Currently my m2 MacBook air makes a fine laptop and desktop machine. I might consider a MacBook pro instead someday (maybe after the M6 comes out) to be a bit better for software design work.

This critical usage will kill your iPad : what if you need macOS while you are travelling?

I prefer the MBA. It’s lighter, cheaper and the keyboard is more comfortable to use.
I have 15 inch mba at home too (m3) almost same weight, the mbp is not a lot more expensive if we compare the 15 inch model with 512gb against the m4 base mbp and come on the keyboard is not more comfortable to use than the MacBook Pro...

Nope! I went in to look at an M2 Air the week it came out, but I went away again and ordered an M1 Air the same day. I still find it hard to believe the new design is thinner. I put them side-by-side in the store. At the back the wedge design is very slightly thicker and at the front it seems much thinner. Anyway, I just prefer it, and it is way more comfortable to type on too (for me at least).

No I will stay on macOS but be angry.
Well, in that case, switch to Windows so you will have more to be angry about. 🤣 🤪🤣🤪

Seriously though, all vendors have dozens of propeller heads doing what they think is best. And that best will annoy some, make others joyous. I switch between Windows, MacOS and IOS daily. There are things about each that I like and things I hate. So at some point I am always angry.
