Have only tried the iOS 12 version with the Mercedes MBUX. Found it to be much slower and way cheaper looking than the in-car system -- though to be fair, MB really did a good job on the new system.
I’ve found that although MBUX initially looks pretty, CarPlay maps is a far better, simpler, clearer layout and offers more accurate and flexible navigation. MBUX also lacks CarPlay’s ETA feature, which I use all of the time.

For a laugh you can display both MBUX nav and apple maps at the same time and watch them disagree with each other about current traffic conditions.

It is still just a rant with one subjective opinion in there; i.e. you think the BMW maps look nicer...You can just use a different navigation map with CarPlay if you don't like the Apple formatting....
Apple Maps is the only one to get our motorways the correct colour (blue) so everything else fails at the outset!

****ING FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now you can text at a stop light

Be careful doing that -- got a ticket for phone use while driving, even though I was stopped at a red light! Effing stupid.

The beauty of CarPlay is that it is essentially a video running on your iPhone being streamed to the stereo. Your car's function is solely to provide input (i.e. the touchscreen says such and such area is being pressed), and everything is rendered on the iPhone. So as long as CarPlay does not require additional funcionality (e.g. Multi Touch), which I believe is highly unlikely for the time being and for a long time coming, since brand new 2020 cars are still using the initial CarPlay protocols, it will still work.

I'm so glad Apple took this route instead of requiring car makers to update their software. Judging by how many years it took to cajole these companies to adopt car play, it would have been so long before we saw widespread adoption of a new version.

Upgrading my iPhone 6 just so I can move forward with the new CarPlay in iOS 13... well that and watchOS 6.

Hate to break it to you, but iPhone 6 is not supported by iOS 13.

I think that’s his point.

Just been thinking today when the new iPhone comes out I’m going to treat myself to a CarPlay unit (nothing as flash as this) with the money I will get from selling my iPhone 8+

Am I imagining it, or didn’t iOS12 have an option in Settings>CarPlay on iPhone to rearrange the apps on the CarPlay screen? There’s now an editable list view, but as my Audi doesn’t have a touchscreen (it has a scroll wheel) I can’t see how to rearrange apps on the CarPlay screen.
That’s correct, in iOS 12, you would rearrange from the settings app. Can’t you use the scroll wheel to select and move icons? I’m sure they’re gonna fix this before release - at least if you flag the issue via the Feedback app :)

I don't have CarPlay. :(

I just friggin' want Siri to be able to answer a phone call on speaker.
(So, I don't have to pull over, or dangerously try to answer the call and put it on speaker while driving.)

You shouldn't have to buy a new car for some basic safety, and something Siri should have been able to do from v1.

What you want has nothing to do with CarPlay. It's just a feature of Bluetooth since BT 1.0

Every head unit I've ever used (since at least maybe 2010) and every modern car should allow you to pair your phone with Bluetooth, and should then automatically respond to a phone call by throwing the audio onto the car speakers.
ALMOST every system will provide a little more than that, like
- press some button and you can route speech to Siri to say things like "Call Joe" to start calls OR
- play audio from your phone on the car speakers.
I honestly can't tell what you're actually complaining about. That your car doesn't have BT? That you didn't know you could pair ANY phone with ANY car's Bluetooth?

I think you need to dial down the misplaced anger at CarPlay, Siri, and Apple; and speak to a knowledgeable friend about what you want to do. You can probably do it all right now for free.
If your car is old (pre-Bluetooth) but you are cheap, you can probably hack something together for less than $30 like a BT receiver that plugs into a car stereo's aux port.
If you want a rather better experience, you can probably buy an old head unit with BT for $50, or a nice new one for $300 and the issue is whether you're capable of installing it, or are willing to pay someone else to do so.

Are you saying that there is a way to reorganize icons from the CarPlay screen? I don’t see it. I can only rearrange them via the Settings app on the phone.

I'm clearly missing something fundamental with carplay. I was actually disgusted with the original carplay because there wasn't a contacts app - something I would use ALL THE TIME. In the new version it's still missing :-(. I'm totally like WTF. What's the reason for not including it - am I missing something???

And we all know that means that it will be reserved for new cars as an incentive to upgrade :(

I would love if my 6 week old car would get an update to allow CarPlay to display turn-by-turn directions on my digital dash but I’d put money on it never happening.

Yes, I’m wishing that our Audi A3 Virtual Cockpit will support CarPlay so that we can see the navigation map but I agree that this is unlikely to be something for which Audi will add support without buying a new car. To be honest, I really like the built-in Google Maps but destination entry is so much easier via CarPlay.

Apple's CarPlay is an absolute piece of garbage. Limited applications. I want all my apps on my CarPlay not what Apple says what I can have. F* that. Plus I have to pay for CarPlay subscription? I can live with Bluetooth, that's all CarPlay is good for... a fancy bluetooth connectivity. I have a 12.9" screen, and your maps is less than half the screen size. WTF? You can even write an app that can learn screen size? It sucks when Apple decides what you can have, that's robbery!

CarPlay needs a WiFi connection to be wireless, and as far as I know neither wireless charging nor smartphone integration work using WiFi..... yet(!)

My BMW X2 has wireless CarPlay via WIFI. I must admit, it is pretty sweet. Looking forward to next month’s IOS update.

Nothing you said is correct. Limited applications is down to developers not developing CarPlay-compatible apps. CarPlay is also free. If you’re paying a subscription, that’s your car manufacturer, not Apple. Screen size issues: again, that’s the manufacturer not implementing the integration well. CarPlay is literally just a video feed to your car’s screen. The car tells the iPhone what the available space is and the iPhone sends as large a feed as possible. If it looks wonky, I guarantee it’s the car manufacturer’s fault.

I’ve had zero issues with CarPlay and the new version is absolutely brilliant. Yes, some bugs are present since it’s a beta but it’s a very good bit of kit and had a big influence on the car I bought.

You don’t seem to know what you’re talking about.

Wow.

First of all, the roads are littered with accidents every day because some moron wants to text while driving - or he wants to watch a video on his phone while swerving all over the freeway. No thanks.

Second, if you are paying to use CarPlay, you must own a BMW. None of the rest of us has to concern ourselves with that money grab.

Finally, if Apple has such a horrible offering for "in car entertainment", feel free to shop around for another flavor... as you may already be aware, Apple is quite good at defining the boundaries with regard to the iOS system. If should not be a surprise that you may not have everything your way. But there IS a mobile device OS for that...

I'd really like to see a calendar on my CarPlay. As of right now mine does not have it.

Can I choose the apps I want to add to CarPlay through my phone? I have an XS.

I also have to say Amazon for CarPlay is the worst. Freezes all the time, plays the wrong tracks, sometimes doesn't play at all. Just horrible.

Calendar is available in CarPlay on iOS 13.

I have heard that the Amazon app really sucks on CarPlay.

With the new split-screen layout screen in iOS 13, I would love to have access to weather info... and I would love to be able to pick the apps that go into the layout... but incredibly doubtful that will be possible.

I’m not sure it’s as simple as AppleHaterLover describes - l had to buy a new head-unit from Mazda that included different hardware, USB port, cabling and updated software.

I spend a lot of time travelling/driving and I’m very happy with the upgrade.

I agree with others, I’d like a greater ability to customise the dashboard.

No, doesn't work for me - plus my Audi isn't touchscreen. However, simply editing and dragging icons on iPhone list view mirrors their order on the CarPlay screen in the car, so it does work reasonably well. I admit that the iOS12 CarPlay UI screen in the iPhone Settings app worked better.

Absolutely digging the new CarPlay interface on the PB. It is certainly a welcomed update since I wasn't a huge CarPlay fan to begin with. Even on the beta, I really haven't experienced any huge hiccups with the interface while using it.

Is the night mode for maps more contrasted? In the video, the camera didn't even pick up on the super thin and light road lines. It's great that you have to stare at it long enough for your eyes to adjust and try to make out the poorly designed map.

Have only tried the iOS 12 version with the Mercedes MBUX. Found it to be much slower and way cheaper looking than the in-car system -- though to be fair, MB really did a good job on the new system.

I find the CarPlay interface quite well designed, but you're right that Mercedes' MBUX is unusually good for a built-in solution. As an MBUX user, you may not be in the target market.

That said, one advantage CarPlay has is that it is updated by Apple and, since AirPlay's interface is handled by the phone, those updates automatically show up on CarPlay-enabled cars. Car systems, by contrast, can look shiny and new at the time of the car's purchase, but often seem fairly antiquated several years later.

It's also worth noting how well CarPlay works with various systems at various screen sizes, etc. -- especially in this new version. Mercedes and other manufacturers don't need to solve that problem (which Apple has solved quite elegantly in my view), since they design for hardware they control. In short, I think it's possible to say that CarPlay is outstanding but that someone with a system as good as MBUX simply might not need it.

The expectation is that WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING, you will say "Hey Siri, call Fred Flintstone", not scroll through an app trying to find contact info...
