Kinda resembles cellular signal strength bars.

If, however, we apply Sir Jony's iOS 7 sensibilities, the evolution looks like this:

I hope if Apple is going bigger (I assume they are) they allow more than 4 icons on the task bar. My favorite JB tweek was having 5 icons and with more screen width there is no reason that can't happen now.

Also I would like it if iOS 8 has some widgets similar to Android, that is the one thing I think Android has on iOS.

Over the past several weeks, a number of photos and videos have shown cases and even physical mockups of Apple's rumored iPhone 6. Most of the cases and mockups appear to have been based either on alleged design drawings published by Japanese magazine MacFan in late March or on essentially identical information leaking through other channels.

MacRumors has now obtained one of these iPhone 6 cases and separately 3D printed a very rough physical mockup based on the MacFan drawings for the 4.7-inch model. Together, the case and the mockup give a good idea of the feel of a larger iPhone.

The larger iPhone definitely makes one-handed operation more difficult, even for relatively large hands, but many users are already accustomed to using two hands much of the time. With the larger body, Apple appears to be shifting the sleep/wake button from the top edge of the device to the right side, and this new location feels very natural in our hands, with the index finger sitting right on the button in a left-handed grip.

Our physical mockup includes our mocked up home screen showing that a 4.7-inch screen at the same 326 pixels per inch as the iPhone 5s would yield a 1334x750 display that could display an additional row of icons. While the mockup is based on the design drawings posted by MacFan, we did elect to slightly depress the surface of the device in order to help its physical features stand out more.

Bummer that the icons in the iPhone 3G look more advanced than the icons on all the ohers.

OMG what is this the 80's?! I don't want to hold a brick up to my face to talk on the phone!

You still talk on the phone? What is this, the 80s?

The reason phones got small was because making phone calls was pretty much all they did. Smaller was better.

These devices aren't really phones anymore; they're pocket computers that have a voice calling app.

If anything, I would want Apple to find a way to put a 4.5" display in a slightly less long, slightly wider, and less-chamfered-edged 5s.

Mondo screens are the future, though, and Apple's no fool.

I want a 4 inch iPhone 6 screen :(we shouldn't be forced in order to get the next iPhone...to have a huge screen.

While I have no qualms about letting people who want giant two handed screens have their desires, I certainly hope the 4" screen is still an option. The 5S is plenty big in my hand, and making it wider and taller is moving it out of the realm of one handed use. And as thats been a point of pride for Apple, one would hope they don't just abandon it all together because some people complain. They have sold a hundred million iPhones with their teeny tiny screens, so clearly someone likes them.

I really do think the optimum screen size system is metric paper :

iPhone - A6
iPad Mini - A5
iPad - A4
MacBook Pro A4
iPad Desk / iMac - A3
Display - A2

Built on golden ratio and precisely scalable.

Wouldn't that give us an iPhone with a +7.1" screen?

Can you do a side profile shot with the phone in the mock up case for depth perspective?

Unfortunately, our mockup is a little too thick, due to a couple of issues related to difficulty of rounding the edges and some bumps from where the printed mockup was removed the support material.

But here are a couple of photos showing the mockup and the iPhone 5 in the case from the side.

Really doesn't look that large. If its slightly shorter and less wide than the HTC One (and thinner), that's really a manageable device. Of course, the tradeoff exists that if one wants a larger display one will likely not being to use the device one-handed.

The top and bottom bezels will be as small as they can be until Apple gets TouchID into the display and does away with the home button (my guess is the iPhone 7). Also, I have no doubt the 4" iPhone will continue to exist. No whether or not they release a brand new 4" iPhone with an A8 chip, I have no idea.

But given the fact there's no app out there that can even touch the A7, I think it's safe to say anyone wanting a new 4" iPhone not already on the 5S can simply go out and buy the 5S and be perfectly satisfied. It will get iOS 8, 9 and probably 10 and be a powerhouse for at least another year or two.

Apple is most likely releasing ONE size...

Or - even if the 5.5" device does come out it likely won't be until months after the 4.7" version. They might announce both at WWDC, with the 4.7" selling a week later and the 5.5" version with the "coming in December" tag....

Why did you only print the rumored 4.7" iPhone 6? Where is the rumored 5.5" one?

Most of the focus has been on the 4.7" one in part because it's rumored to be coming sooner than the larger one. We haven't seen any cases for the big one yet, and so far this is the only probably 5.5" mockup we've seen.

We'll see how things develop, but we wanted to test things out with a quick 3d print of the 4.7" one to compare against the case.

OMG what is this the 80's?! I don't want to hold a brick up to my face to talk on the phone! How is this going to fit into anyone's pants!? People will look like dolts handling a phone that large! Phandroids can have their phablets!

*Takes photos at public events with iPad*

*Puts iPad mini into suit pocket*

It will work fine since Apple has magically enabled the phone to digitally extend your thumb so it easily reaches the entire screen.

I agree. The perfect iphone would be iPhone 5 size with no bezels at all. The home button is outdated at this point - all of its functions could be software implemented. It just takes up space now.

Ever hear of Touch ID?

Its this thing in that "outdated" home button.

The home button is not going away. There has to be a place for Touch ID.

Do you think Apple will keep the current 4" size, along with the 4.7" size as an option for the iPhone 6?

Do you believe that a 5.5" is coming? Do you think Apple would sell a 4", 4.7" and 5.5" iPhone 6?

Could the 5.5" devices "just" be an iPod Touch? Possibly one with a Cellular Data option?

Will iOS 8 support the 4S? (At least as well as the iPhone 4S supports iOS 7) One would think so with Apple still selling it? I think that iOS 8 will be more of a stability/power improvement since iOS 7 was such a huge jump. One would think that it wouldn't be much harder for the 4S to run iOS 8 than iOS 7? I know the 4S has some iOS7 issues, but surely iOS 8 won't be that much more taxing, and if anything, could possibly help the 4S performance.

Scalable design will be pushed hard regardless, but this would mean they have to support up to 4 iPhone screen sizes in iOS 8, plus 2 screen sizes (with 4 resolutions, unless iPad 2 is dropped), with the iPads.

I'm sure they can handle juggling all that, and they've been pushing scalability to developers for a while now, but it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. In regards to both how many product options/variations they will be handling, and how many screen sizes/resolutions iOS 8 will be addressing.

I think we will see an iPhone 5SC with minor tweaks for those wanting a 4 inch screen as well as the iPhone 5C. The 5S will be retired as they did with the 5. The 4.7 inch will be the iPhone 6. The 5.5 inch device will either be a large iPod or small iPad with a full cellular option. That is, it will actually be marketed as a small tablet with a phone option.

Regarding an additional row of icons, I propose a fix to how the icons might be spaced more correctly on such a screen:

Image

This looks more apple-like, especially applied to a render.

Much better, the one that's been going around looked very awkward but I wasn't sure why until seeing this.
