It's probably ok to report it without posting that you've reported it...

Of course it's probably ok to not post that you don't need to post that you reported it after reporting it, but I assume this sequence of replies will get pruned anyway.

Are you both happy with the thickness when folded? The thickness is why I can't imagine myself adopting a foldable device anytime in the near future. I wouldn't mind a mm or two thicker for extra battery, so I am not a worshiper of all things thin. But as an honest question, is it just a compromise you are willing to deal with?
Honestly I don't notice it. It's comfortable and fits into my pocket without issues. It's definitely not something that I think is a deal breaker. It feels nice and sturdy.

Foldable phones are the future. Glad Samsung is doing this so apple can order the foldable OLED modules in 2025 :D
Samsung should do more testing before rushing out products. Apple is never trying to be first, but to have a good product for the consumer. I am so surprised why people don't understand this. It's not the timing, but the product that matters!

I played with this the other day. Lol, seriously it’s a solution looking for a problem. I just can’t see this lasting.

I got one. Love it so far. Also have no doubt that if Apple did make one they would make it more polished. But it is a fantastic device thus far. I couldn't imagine going back to my 11 Pro Max.

Before Apple's newfound lack of scruples with privacy I am not sure I would have ever thought I'd return to Android... but here I am typing on a Fold 3. And I am actually enjoying it.

To each his own I guess because I simply don’t get the appeal of a folding phone. Why introduce one more thing that can break into the most important device you use? I get that if you want a phablet folding reduces its footprint and might allow you to store it in your pocket so I can see that but if still rather not have a folding phone. Give me one that fits into my pocket as is, full screen with a small bezel all day everyday over one I have to fold.

You won’t appreciate the foldable tech until you actually have used it. Samsung has done a remarkable job with foldables. Sure, it is not perfect by any means yet, but they are getting there.

before dismissing this and Samsung, give it a try. I can’t stand some Apple fanboys who always worship what Ale does and doesn’t do and dismiss everyone else’s effort to innovate.
I wouldn't 'dismiss' Samsung. They make great washers, and TV's and rolling pins and refrigerators, and they and the Korean Govt. have created a very powerful and corrupt uni-government-coporation. What they make best are commodity items certainly. And they are good at it. I don't wish them harm, I just wish they'd make one thing that's actually revolutionary or truly intriguing. Aside from that, and the fact they are stuck with Google as a partner, I have no trouble rccmdn Samsung items.

I guess I'm not sure what you'd consider "revolutionary", but their components are certainly top of the line. Displays, memories, fab processes... When they try to bundle those parts into consumer products they don't always stick the landing, but I think they do serve to demonstrate the quality of the components.

Is the crease the new notch? It seems so obvious in pictures, but I imagine once you use it and get used to it, it "disappears." I'm far to embedded in the Apple ecosystem to even consider one of these, but it's definitely an intriguing piece of tech.
it really depends on what you’re watching and your surroundings. If you’re watching something dark in a bright room you’ll see it more than if you’re in a dark room. Bright content helps it disappear as well. You will always feel it when your finger runs over it. It honestly doesn’t impact anything at all. Like the notch your brain learns to tune it out.

Without a case, its roughly the same thickness as my 12PM in my wallet case. it’s also only roughly 75% as wide as the 12PM when it’s closed.

it’s not a fair comparison, since I haven’t found a case that I like, but I was kind of surprised that it wasn’t as thick as I was expecting.

I don't care one way or the other about foldables (other than the extra cost). But Samsung is really not thinking in a very innovative way here. They are doing the selfie camera with a barely functional compromise of the under display solution that originally was designed for a standard candybar phone. Standard phones all designed with the aesthetic that there can be no bezels even if the top bezel is made completely functional with cameras and lidar and other sensors. But on a foldable, with all of its other glaring compromises, it is silly to not rethink the aesthetic. The minuses of a foldable design can be utilized to overcome some of the minuses of the standard candybar design.

One of the biggest minuses is the thickness of the folded phone. Now what is one of the minuses of the thin candybar phones? The thinness makes it impossible to put in longer focal length cameras with larger lenses and sensors and a camera bump is the norm. So why are they copying the thin way of making cameras? Instead, make the back half of the phone have an extended camera box that is as deep as the folded phone and only holds front and back cameras and other sensors. The screen would only extend up to the bottom of the camera box. The front half, which also holds the outer screen on its back, would be shorter than the back half and fold into the gap left by the camera box, so that everything is flush when closed. No more camera bump, but larger lenses for both back cameras and the selfie camera. The selfie camera faces the user when both open and closed, and the other cameras face away. Done right, there should be room for lidar depth finders and anything else that is needed. And the larger lenses and sensors without other encumbrances will make better images even before applying computational imaging. That extra quality in the camera would probably be more desirable at that price point than even having a mini-tablet folded into the phone. I would think many more people would find the weight and bulk and cost bearable if the camera was leaps beyond anything else on standard smartphones.
I think you literally just described the Huawei MateX.

I actually think that’s the superior form factor for foldables but even Huawei dropped that design with the MateX2

sorry for a bunch of replies and posts in a row, a mod can combine them if they want to…

I’ve had a couple of days with it and I’m kind of torn. I don’t have any issues with the device and the hardware but more around the software and doing everything I can to stay out of Googles ecosystem.

from my perspective, Apple could kill my interest in this phone by doing two things.

one - split screen multi-tasking. Let me run two apps side by side in landscape mode and then stacked in portrait mode. The hardware is plenty powerful and we know ios can multitask just fine. They need to deliver this functionality on a phone.

second - and the most important, IMO, Apple needs to commit to a work profile concept like Android. They’ve done User Enrollment but it’s very half baked. It requires managed Apple ID’s, you can’t install a second copy of an application, and you can’t take over the application if it’s already installed on the device.

This alone will probably be a big reason to keep me on Android from this point forward. Apple is basically telling me that I can either completely disconnect myself from work on the go, allow my employer to fully take over my device to access corporate resources, or carry a second phone. I don’t think any of those are the right answer.

And I think the fact is that the more I shift over to using Android the less I’m going to be inclined to buy a new iPad or a new Mac in the future.

Apple doesn't have such a crappy product and if they ever made such a product it won't be the crap $ammy made. Your argument is invalid. 😂
Here is a list of phone gimmicks innovated by Samsung and then adopted (or soon to be adopted) by Apple:
* OLED
* high resolution large screens
* NFC
* multi camera design
* super zoom
* wireless charging
* waterproofing
* foldable devices
* multiwindow UI
* pen support

These are essential characteristics of the modern smart phone. Just imagine what iPhone would look like if Apple were not following Samsung in phone design.

I'm not buying this for the same reason I don't buy an iPhone Pro Max.. sure the screen is bigger and it has more features, but if it's less portable and slower to handle, it'll just annoy me for 99% of use cases. When I need a big screen, my 16" laptop isn't too far.

I'll wait until it's truly foldable.

My phone is essentially my computing device. I’ve been using my iPad a bit more recently so I’m hoping that this will be able to cover both use cases.

I know that the cover screen is pretty narrow but I was surprised at how usable it is for basic phone stuff.

If I’m making a phone call, texting, doing nav, using Discord or Teams, Twitter, or ordering food online from one of the apps it works perfectly fine.

Web browsing sucks for sure. Video can be ok if you’re not watching something quick. Those are definitely tasks for the main screen.
