I have no opinion about the cans or their pouch, but why is every damn review so worried about “throwing them in a bag”? What do people have for bags, rock tumblers??

Besides, anyone thinking that $550 (AU$900) is a lot of money for a set of headphones is just not getting out much. Perhaps we should count ourselves lucky that these are wireless headphones...

To be fair though, even if you have anything metal in your bag, and you drop the AirPod Max’s in the bag, even a few inch drop could scratch the shell of the headphones pretty badly. Agreed that the reviewers are using a poor choice of words, but the fact stands that the case is not a protective one at all.

In a world of top headphones, these are very cheap compared to Sennheiser Orpheus/HE 1 or Warwick Acoustics Sonoma or Audeze LCD-4z or Grado PS1000e and so on....

My ears are apparently too big?! The earpiece cushions really squash down, the cups are shallow and the headband tension is such that it's a tight fit around the upper edges of my ear. Here I was hoping to relieve the ear-hole fatigue of in-ear buds but now I've traded it for a different kind of fatigue...?

I hope there's a market for 3rd party ear cups/cushions, like the Sennheiser replacements pads I bought for my Sony MDR-7506s I've had for the past 17 or so years...

did apple include a way to be able to use these on in-flight entertainment systems?

FU headphones — for the rest of us. :D Apple decided to turn up the profit volume for accessories as they take advantage of their customer base. Some accessories are now missing, a 100% adder to the bottom line. Others are simply priced to scam the faithful. These headphones and the HomePod are examples of products that are poor values.
I can’t speak for Airpods Max (yet) but Homepod a poor value? I couldn’t disagree more. I’ve owned a couple of wireless speakers that cost twice as much, like JBL L8 and B&W A5 and while the L8 was neck and neck (sounded better for some songs but not others) the A5 didn’t come close. Add to that the tight integration with the Apple ecosystem (Homekit hub, handoff, etc.), support for Dolby Atmos, and Siri integration, and Homepod far surpasses the speakers I’ve mentioned and trounces anything in its price range when it comes to value.

Agreed. And at the $199 it’s been on sale for at Best Buy and other outlets, here in the US at least, it’s a steal.

It’s a good thing I don’t buy gadgets to “look cool.” The iPhone is a tool, the Apple Watch is a tool, and the AirPods lineup are all tools for most people. Contrary to what Apple haters would you have believe, I have yet to meet someone who buys Apple stuff to “look cool.” It’s only used in a pejorative way from non-Apple users in an effort to feel clever as they cling to their outdated, laggy android phone that haz customz ROMZ! No one noticed or cares what devices/gadgets you’re using, and if you are the 1% that cares, all the Apple gadgets in the world won’t help you.
I definitely get comments on my SS Apple Watch, FWIW.

Regulat HomePod I assume? The mini is $99 but comes with a now no -included (for most products) $20 brick so it’s basically $80.

I’d have to use these in person but gotta say, the Surface headphones feel more Apple-like with the knob-as-can vs. “surplus Watch parts” design.

It’s a valid concern, because it’s not just about the items inside your bag - imagine scenarios where your bag may be compressed by external factors (e.g. overhead storage, especially when someone else decides to fit their bag just on top of yours).

$550 is a lot of money for a pair of headphones but it’s perfectly fine if it’s good value. I think the problem here is that for that money you’re getting a really good contender in terms of sound and comfortably but some really dire compromises (see case, lack of charger and cable adapter). When you’re heading into iPhone price territory I don’t think that’s a lot to ask for.

I also don’t think the whataboutism works here. The Max has a place between the latest Bose/Sony offerings and the high end headphones like the ones you linked. I am happy to bet that most people will compare to the former, not the latter, which is where a lot of the complaints come from.

Just like a Macbook has a place between some Dell and some Lenovo? I think that’s where most comparisons go off the rails.

BTW, I didn’t link headphones, just headphone cables :D

At no point has Apple claimed anything about "audiophile". What you're experiencing is people incorrectly associating price with "audiophile" These aren't audiophile headphones by any definition. Again, Apple isn't claiming they are either.

These are 100% waterproof to 1000m and can function as a SCUBA tank in an emergency. ← That's according to Apple's FAQ. Ymmv.

Price isn't an indication of anything but price. It definitely doesn't imply audiophile. The same as a $6000-$10000 Caviar converted iPhone doesn't imply superior technology... or class.

This is what Apple.com says: "deliver an unparalleled listening experience." Yes Apple is claiming you aren't going to get better.

The page is full of "We are the best".

I still can't imagine spending more than $200 more for these than what the Bose 700's cost (currently $340), and still not getting a 3.5mm cable and an absolutely useless case, haha.
My sentiments exactly. The lack of the 3.5mm cable that you’d need to plug them into in-flight entertainment on long haul flights (my #1 use case) is particularly laughable.
That case is just so comically awful. For the way this product is priced, it's insulting.
Agree! Whoever designed that case should be fired. How are you supposed to travel with that thing?

I know I can sync these with my iPhone, but what about the sound from a smart TV? My TCL 6-Series set doesn't have bluetooth audio. Sigh.

I purchased a small blutetooth transmitter (in USD probably $25) and plugged it into the line-out of the TV. It connects my Beats Solo Pro flawlessly with no problem each time and it also even remembers the volume (obviously you can't pause or fast-forward).

Bose QC35 are amazing and by all means a premium product, they beat the new Apple product in most departments, including cable/jack, case and price.

I'd think hard and long when choosing between the two. Bose does not have transparency mode nor auto-switching, and changing the paddings is rather cumbersome (they do get worn out once in a couple years). But the case is great, and audio jack does come in handy on airplanes (and yes, some of us still fly in 2020).
Interesting, I've always been super underwhelmed by the actual sound quality of the different iterations of Bose QCs I've owned. Noise cancellation was really the thing with them, but I would never use them for anything at home.

It does not matter because must Apple products are "comically awful" until eyes adjust and then they are the best. People just love internet memes.

Where did Apple say that this was for audiophiles? Talking about how good they sound is what any company would do but it doesn't mean they're aiming for audiophiles. Anybody who is actually into sound quality will know these are not in that category. These are just "premium" headphones like Bang and Olufsen but priced higher because they can.
So premium in this category doesn’t mean premium audio just a premium product ?

I'm not actually blown away by the sound of my xm3 so if the sound is a big difference I don't see how it would hold value for me. I normally get tempted by many apple products but this one I'm actually sitting out...maybe if they bring out a 350 sport version which can be used for the gym

Disclaimer: I spend way too much on gadgets that I spend way too little time using.
First time I splurged on headphones - Sennheiser Momentum. Look awesome, but that stupid bloody slide design never kept the ear cups where I needed them (I didn't use the case). Spent most of my time using Ear / Air Pods.
Second Time - Bit the bullet. Bose Quiet comfort. Loved them until they died (Not using the case ruined the cushions. bought two replacements; my bad) Actually used my Air Pods - they're so convenient.
Third time - JBHi-Fi, great price on the fancy Sony (Bose competitor)... but damn, those new Bose 700s are SEXY ! (didn't use case, gave to wife... she uses old ear pods with lightning connector)
Fourth time - New Bose Noise Cancelling 700s - yeah baby ! (no case, I use air pods pro) Still peeves me that they connect to my phone unbidden when I move my bag.

Lessons learnt - I don't care about the case. My ears can NOT tell the difference between devices. I LOVE the features of the what's-it-called, H1 chip.
Switch seamlessly between devices, yes please; spatial audio, yes please; ear-muff-things that breathe in 30c + weather, yes please; easy to swap muffs, yes please; non-bulky case, yes please. Satisfy the itch that keeps me buying new phone cases and watch bands, yes please !

I still have, Ear Pods, Air Pods, Air Pods Pro, the Sony what's-its, the Sennheiser somewhere and the oh-so-sexy Bose 700s.
Am I going to buy the Air Pods Max ? Yes please !

(anybody want to buy some slightly used earphones ? !)

PS. I am VERY interested in the call quality when using the new ones - comments pease !
