I'm probably going to keep my 2018 11" Pro but I'm curious how it will look with the new keyboards. I know the cutout on the back is made for the larger camera bump. It's not a huge deal to me as long as the keyboard is flush with the back of the 2018 models. I imagine it is.

Kinda like that. I don’t think it looks bad at all. And how often do I even look at the back while I’m actually using it?

Inspect your shinies. I got a few units today and one had a chip in the glass, another two scratches down the middle, and another with scuffs on the bottom metal. All fresh out of the box. Extremely disappointed.

Also of note, the chassis flexes like the old one, the camera on the back does not do portrait even though it has two cameras, the speakers sound no better, and the display quality isn’t improved over the old one as many already knew. So if you have a 2018 and I have the 1TB models, which already has 6 GB of ram, there is absolutely no reason to upgrade. Just get the magic keyboard.

Apples QC is so bad right now I’m actually embarrassed for them. Got a full refund coming. Not buying replacements. China has done enough damage for one season.

No issues here. I’m assume you tried to clean the screen. Looks super dirty for day one. I can make mine look brand in new in 10 seconds with my t-shirt. Also, why the hell did you buy two if your hating on it so much? Buying for an org?

How is the FaceID on the iPad? Would someone who finds it a giant step backwards on the iPhone (enough so that it's a dealbreaker for future phone purchases) be okay with it?

I've been wanting a Pro model for some time, but I fear they'll never implement a version of TouchID again. And I wonder if the fact that one picks up a tablet fewer times per day than a phone would make a difference in tolerance.

FaceID makes much more sense on the iPad than on the iPhone. An iPhone is already in your hand, I didn’t mind placing the thumb on Touch ID to unlock it. On my old iPad Air 2 sometimes it took me a while to know if Touch ID was on the left or the right side when holding it horizontally, especially in the dark. And when it was standing on its own, like with a Smart Cover, it was kinda awkward to go and put the finger in the Touch ID sensor. Also, unlike the iPhone, there is no notch even with faceID. The only problem I have on my iPad with Face ID is that it’s so fast that sometimes my hand gets in the way when I’m swiping up to unlock in landscape.

Also FaceID works way better on the iPad. Like it has a wider field of view and can detect my face from almost any angle unlike the iPhone. If you have an iPhone with Face ID, most of it’s annoyances are not on the iPad.

Was pondering to update my 2017 12.9, but like the improvements on the 2018 were not sufficiently convincing, neither are the improvements of the enhanced 2018 model (aka iPad 2020). The 2017 is still perfectly capable, there is no word on whether things like the unresponsive touchscreen have been fixed and due to the relocated Smart connector I could not use my Logitech Base docking unit any longer, which I really like.

tl,dr: Upgrade in most cases not worth it not only for 2018 owners, but also for many 2017 owners.

Nuts paying $1K starting for a 12.9" device with only 6GB DRAM in 2020. For comparison, $1K Pixelbook Go has 16GB DRAM.

Maybe Apple should've skipped the 2018 rebranding and focus more on porting MacOS to ARM.

Absolutely agreed. The additional cost of paying overpriced magic keyboard for iPad is a lot worse without the row of function key and 6GB RAM won't be ample for people who work on productivity applications.

A small part of me was hoping to be surprised and dazzled by some new compelling feature that would push me to upgrade from my last gen model, much as Night Mode encouraged an upgrade from an XS to an 11 Pro.
A slightly larger part of me was relieved that this turned out to be an incremental update which means my only expenditure on this iPad round will be the new keyboard.

If only the Magic Keyboard was available I'd have gone for a 12.9" as I need a new laptop but am stuck in no-mans-land just now with no revised 13" MBP and no all-in-one for this other than Brydge.

All the specs in the world won’t let the pixelbook do what the ipad does. I have never understood this obsession with specs at the expense of user experience.

So the 6GB across all models has been confirmed by Apple? I know there has been conflicting info in reviews.

In the last mkbhd video he specifically asked Apple and they choose not to say, showing how silly they can be about specs.

but I believe benchmarks for all models showed 6 gigs across all the board. Someone correct me if I’m wrong

Here's how it works: if Apple releases an SoC for iPhone/iPad that provides significant benchmark increases, tech media will say "most users won't notice a difference in day-to-day use vs the previous model". If Apple releases an SoC that doesn't have significant benchmark increases, tech media will say "don't buy the new one, it doesn't have better benchmarks than the previous model".

People expect some level of performance improvement with every new release from Apple products and the new early 2020 IPP failed to do just that.
Yeah it does feel a little too weird when every single gen we’re getting benchmarks and bragging bout improvements. And now its not even a gen up in processor. It’s literally the same thing. All i can come up with is the real update is in the fall when another new iPad comes out and pisses off the people that bought an ipad now.
