In my use case, every time I've tried to replace my MBP with an iPad, the lack of pointer support always rears its head. When using it in landscape mode on a desk, its a total pain to try and use Safari when you have to keep touching the screen. I suspect that's been the same for quite a few people who have considered switching.

Yup, the new mouse and trackpad support adds a lot of comfort when working from a desk in a lot of cases.

I'd held off buying a refurbished Pro 11" but now I'm wondering why?
Ordered the new Pro 11" last week, still hasn't shipped.
Does anyone know if the cameras on this new Pro has the same night time photography ability as the iPhone 11?

It doesn't. Yet. It could be enabled in a future iPadOS update.

Personally, I have not found a compelling reason to upgrade from my 10.5” iPad Pro. I was thinking I would upgrade this year, but with the minor graphics performance bump I will just continue on with my 10.5. Quite surprised they didn’t do essentially anything with the CPU.

I believe Apple was eager to get the A14/A14X completed and start moving to 5nm as soon as possible.

Along with that, if they are working on moving the Mac to the Ax-Series, then I think they want to start with CPUs on the 5nm node as well.

There just wasn’t time to devote to engineering an A13X CPU or they got far enough along that the prototype’s performance gains were simply not worth taping it out.

Portrait mode on the camera missing is no surprise though, right?
It’s a little surprise as consumers have been made used to “more than one camera = PORTRAIT!” Not too long ago, more than one camera only meant, say, a higher quality zoom.

Why does trackpad/mouse support suddenly make it a Mac replacement? I mean, software- and function wise it stays exactly the same.🤔
The iPad has already been a Mac replacement for millions of people who have average everyday computing needs (Facebook, Internet, Email, and some don’t even use an app, just use Safari for all three). I agree that trackpad/mouse isn’t likely to change the number of folks that see it as a replacement by much.

Portrait photography usually is not performed on a set of two wide angle lenses. That might be confusing to some and might be possible via software on some phone - but it’s not a typical setup. The longer lens suits this much better.

Continuing complaints about this being a non-upgrade with the CPU, but I think that's the wrong way to think about this. If mini LED isn't ready until late this year they had 2 options, one they just wait, and people complain they need a new iPad now, but don't want one that's approaching 2 years old, or two they do this refresh, giving people who need an iPad now quite a few new features and enhancements before the new model debuts at the end of this year (high end 12.9") and/ or rolls out fully this time next year. It's a solid release. More graphics power, 6GB RAM, already plentiful CPU power, base storage bump, LiDAR and wide angle camera systems and stereo sound recording. If you were happy to buy the 2018s a few months ago, no reason you shouldn't be even more happy to buy these now?

Do people really complain that their ipad is more thab 1 year old? I mean, is this really a thing that happens?

LOL!

The MacBook Air and the iPad are nothing alike. No idea why people say “well for this price I’d rather buy a laptop that has no touch screen, pencil support or iOS”. Well ok. Different products.

for a lot of us: price doesn’t matter. iPad is what we want. We aren’t just getting it because it’s supposedly cheaper than a MacBook. We want it

I think this hits the nail right on the head.

I'm guilty of comparing the two products, but the reality is that they're so different that there's really no NEED to compare them any longer.

I fall on the MBAir side of the "debate" (I don't draw), but someone like my daughter (who is heavily into the creative/graphic arts) can now have a powerful device that can fill ALL her needs.

My wife will not pickup a laptop to save her life, but you'd have to pry her 9.7 iPad from her cold, dead fingers.

Thus, people who want, need, or prefer a laptop need not fret about the iPad at all.

It's like going to the Harley Davidson dealer and complaining about the vehicles having only two wheels or not being able to tow anything.

Personally, I think the iPad is freaking amazing, and I LOVE the modularity of it all. Price be damned.

Indeed, I just sold my MacBook Air and the 12.9 2020 iPad Pro will be a tablet and laptop for my needs going forward

How is the FaceID on the iPad? Would someone who finds it a giant step backwards on the iPhone (enough so that it's a dealbreaker for future phone purchases) be okay with it?

I've been wanting a Pro model for some time, but I fear they'll never implement a version of TouchID again. And I wonder if the fact that one picks up a tablet fewer times per day than a phone would make a difference in tolerance.

I bought an iPad Pro with faceid and after a week I returned it to go back to my ipp with touchid. The faceid was horrible to use on iPad. If you're using it flat on a table faceid doesn't work. If you hold the ipp in landscape then your hand blocks the camera and faceid doesn't work.

Too Expensive in Australia, Crazy money!
You’re kidding, right? You guys are paying less than we are in the States.

The 1TB cellular 12.9 is $1,649 here, $1,511 there. Even the base model here is $999, only $907 there. Wish our prices were that low!

I agree. In terms of using Face ID for security applications, I prefer it on the iPhone versus the iPad. Mainly because I found touch ID to be more manageable in situations when I’m holding the iPad. I don’t have to hold it up to my face or put the iPad in a certain direction to unlock it. I’m totally fine with Face ID on the iPad, but if I had the option, it would be touch ID strictly for the ease of not having to lean/hold the iPad to unlock with Face ID. [It’s great technology, but it can be cumbersome, especially with a larger device like the iPad.]

That is soooo few people. Its a cash grab. Most apple releases are.

You are delusional if you believe the vast majority of people replace their iPads every release.

All product releases are "cash grabs" by that definition. Heck, you going to work every day is a cash grab.

Do people really complain that their ipad is more thab 1 year old? I mean, is this really a thing that happens?

LOL!

People speculate when a new model will arrive, then they hold off on purchasing because they don't want to buy the old one just before a launch. If the new one doesn't arrive then they get stuck in a waiting cycle. That's when they complain.

I always thought my 10.5 was the Goldilocks of iPads. The 12.9 (2nd generation) was too big and the 9.7 was too small. The 10.5 was just right. But I now have the 2020 12.9" with it's thinner case. I'm almost 66 now and can't see as well as I used to. The 12.9 is awesome.

Geekbench 5 results:
2017 10.5" iPad Pro, CPU single-core 832, multi-core 2265, Compute 6722
2020 12.9" iPad Pro, CPU single-core 1118, multi-core 4622, Compute 9844

If they didn't fix it structurally, the bending issue must not be as widespread as I assumed. But, I know my luck with Apple products and it's not worth the risk/hassle. Here's to hoping there's a redesign next year! 🥂

I have a first-get 10.5" iPad Pro and ordered this pretty much on a virus-stranded impulse. It arrived yesterday, I've been really busy and haven't even opened the package yet. Now, I'm beginning to wonder if this was a good idea. Now, I'm thinking of sending it back and getting one of the previous generation models on Amazon for a whole lot less, or staying with mine (which I love) and using the $ to get a new MBA for not much more.

I don’t begrudge you waiting until fall to get the “best deal”, however I gotta let you know: you will be absolutely SMITTEN with the difference of not having a bezel on your next iPad... I can pretty much promise, whether you get this one or the next- you’ll be well pleased with the upgrade! =)

Couldn't disagree more. I bought the iPad with minimal bezels and returned it after a week, in part because of the lack of bezels. My hand that was holding iPad frequently registered as a touch and would mess up what I was doing. On a large handheld touch device, bezels are good.

I know that I will eventually get a new iPad Pro, but this was one of the reasons I ended up getting a 2017 iPad Pro when B&H put them on clearance. I used the 2018 at my last job briefly and had a horrible time with the lack of bezels to grab onto. Yes, it makes it veggie, but way easier to grab and go. But that’s just me...and you and surely quite a few other people.

My 2020 iPad will be here in the first week of April. I'm upgrading from a Gen 1 12.9 iPad Pro to this 12.9 Gen 4 iPad Pro, should be a big improvement over all. I'll likely pick up a Magic track pad keyboard for it in May if they're available on time and aren't too costly.

The price is already out. $300/350?

I too am tempted by the new trackpad keyboard, but want to see reviews about how sturdy the hinge is first. I am also concerned about what would happen to my existing Smart Keyboard. It’s not going to fetch much online due to its scuffed condition and I see no reason to continue using it.
