The immediate hate for a v1.0 app that is entirely free to use astounds me
It does for me too, but the fact that such basic things even as notifications seems like a giant oversight to me

I mean, I feel like the point of a sports app should be to allow you to be notified about certain things about your favorite teams/leagues without having to be in the app all the time

I'm sure it'll get added in due time, but part of me feel like it should have been there from the stat

No NFL or College football? Deleted.

Sucks because I’ve really been wanting a good sports score app. Looks like this isn’t it.
2 sports currently not playing for an app that only displays scores and standings.

Makes sense to delete an app for not having an impossible thing on it.

@miamialley you can give the thumbs down all you want, doesn't change the fact what I said is accurate.

Literally no other score app omits entire leagues because it’s off season. Makes no sense as you can still view rosters, divisions, schedules, past results, etc. You’re on a roll on this one.

It only shows scores and standings currently. NFL won't be back til the fall so no rush.
It seems like Eddy Cue didn't bother to talk to any sports fans about what they look for in a sports app.

No NFL information, stats, links, etc. and the most interesting period in professional football (free agency) aside from the games is now and the NFL is missing. The season starts way before the fall. It starts with free agency. Almost the same goes for college football. So yes, this is a significant shortcoming that will prevent the app from being taken seriously by a lot of sports fans. Why would someone use this app when there are vastly more proven alternatives?

Just so you know, I am not a big NFL fan and could not care less about college football none of which is necessary to have a legit opinion about the apps serious deficiencies.

It's because it is scores only app, not news etc. So it will be there when the NFL is playing games in August. Same with college football. It will start showing spring training for MLB tomorrow.

And my comment below is also accurate:

Looks like @ProfessionalFan was on the dev team for the Apple Sports app!

No live activities, no widgets, no Apple Watch support…

Seems like this was made by a talented 3rd grader for a contest at Apple. I don't get it.

I'm thinking this is Apple's way of getting into the current gold rush of legal sports betting in the United States.

They already make most of their app money by selling casino games for children. This is just the next logical step.

Yes - the minimal viable product - i work for a well known software company who did this until recently. We got a backlash from our customers, and so the powers that be have decided not to continue down the MVP route any more!

Wow it must be nice to work for a company where management actually cares what the users want. Increasingly rare these days.

While I'm sure it will be expanded over time, still. The initial release is barebones.

This statement applies to all new or updated software released by every company with a market cap of over a trillion dollars. Yet indie developers can release full featured apps.

Something is wrong with the world...

Would be interesting if they had F1, Nascar and the NFL…even out of season should be able to select favourite team (like you can with MLB)

I’ll say one thing this thread is nothing else if not entertaining. Lot of complaining it doesn’t do enough and then a bunch of folks accusing Apple of Sherlocking if they add the stuff people are complaining is missing. LOL.

I have one question though. Does anyone here really think Apple released this unaware how it compares to others? It could be just as Eddy said, it’s simple for a reason. Could be Apple looked and saw a lack of a simple unintrusive , ad-free app and wanted to offer a 1st party solution. If so, then it will probably be fine for a whole lot of users.

I’d guess though it’s a play to get more users to the News and TV apps. It wouldn’t surprise me if when 17.4 launches the scores will leave the News app and there will be links back to News for the latest stories. We’ve already see in the screen shots that’t the plan for video content so it makes sense for news as well. The infrastructure for notifications already exists for scores so I expect that will just switch to the Sports app. Same for Live activities.

Probably should have read the press release to find out NFL will be added when season begins in the fall, and used the app a while before making a video. Pretty weird to be figuring out basic features while making a video -- does it really matter if you wait a couple hours before publishing a much better product???

This app seems like it needed more time in the oven. Why the rush to get out a half baked app?
