So the AOD is only for the watch face, not third party apps? Would love to have this feature for bicycling and other sports/activities where you want updated metrics but turning the wrist is inconvenient.

Personally I disagree that there’s no compelling reason to upgrade from the 4... if the always on display was the ONLY new feature I would upgraded in a heartbeat! It’s the one thing about Apple Watch that has always driven me mad. I have a 4 and I can’t WAIT to upgrade! (waiting for the Nike versions).

It's really great. Today was the first time I was discreetly checking the time in a meeting with the AOD. I don't regret upgrading from the S4.

I’ve always found battery life to be worse after setting up a new watch or phone. Happened to me with the series 4 and every update before. Those who are just setting up the series 5, I’d like to hear your experiences after using the new watch for a few days. I’ve found battery life always improves after a few days of use.

It does also include the Apple Workout app for AOD -- doesn't show the hundredths of a second, but does show seconds. Can be a little difficult to read at an angle in direct sun with sunglasses and a smudged display, but is fully readable with a little shade. So maybe not as handy on a bicycle as for a runner.

Proofreading would be good, several little issues with this article.
The irony level is high.

If you are going to criticize, at least make sure your post isn’t suffering from the same need.

While I am glad to see a new release, it wasn’t enough to warrant an upgrade from my series 3.

question, if no iphone at all, can apple watch be activated and work along?

You need an iPhone.

The battery of this thing is terrible. Everything is good but not the battery life. I ended the day with 1x% while my Series 4 had 5x% consistently.

Once you get to your mid-40s, even if you have 20/20 vision you can’t really read much on the watch when you don’t have your reading glasses on, so it’s mostly useful for voice control, telling the time, dictation, taking the odd call, and notifications - things which don’t need a lot of space. I see a circular model being very popular.
Really? I'm in my 70's, with terrible vision and I have no problems reading the Series 5. As a matter of fact, the text is so large, it looks like a Fisher-Price watch to me. :)

The first day was challenging. Three days later, my battery life is just fine.

So what faces work with always on? I've always custom made my own custom faces in photoshop using the photos face option. does that not work with it?

The always on faces have a low power option, as far as I know (the ones I have used). By design, essential information is visible but not the entire watch face.

I’ll likely pass on this one, even though I have a Series 2 version. I’m a little miffed at Apple’s ordering model for the stainless watch. There’s no option to buy it without cellular — something I have no need for. I love the look of my stainless Series 2. I can’t imagine why they don’t offer stainless without cellular.

Apple really baffles me sometimes.
I agree. I have an original S0 SS without cellular and was kind of annoyed with it as well. I have seen lots of silver aluminum ones and didn’t like how they looked. Kind of blah. But I didn’t want to spend nearly double for SS over aluminum this time around.

So I bought a space gray aluminum S5 and I’m actually quite happy with how it looks. Also got a product red sports band which goes really, really well with the dark tones of the watch.

Will stick with my series 4. This is cool but not worth an upgrade to me

I'm coming from a S2 and am seriously considering upgrading. I wouldn't know what potential features would make me wait for S6. (other than sleep tracking - which was rumored and might come in a software update?)

I'm interested in the different design, AOD, ECG, fall detection.... I've been toying with the idea of going cellular after having a Wifi only S2, but unfortunately my iPhone is on a prepaid plan.... (and no, I can't change that as I'd lose my number)

I like the idea of the display being on, but it seems like people who have the latest watch are complaining a lot about battery life, lack of app support for the always-on display, and slow responsiveness. I'm thinking about saving some money and just getting a series 4 til next year.

For me - put it on at 5am, 1hr workout and would have been on cellular during the workout, and no battery left at midday - watch went into low power mode. Wasn't using the watch much except the workout. Series 3 used to have for me about 60% charge left at the end of the day.

I'm putting it down to perhaps any extra processing the watch is doing to get setup during the initial day or so -- let's see what a reboot and another day brings.

*Update* 4 hours into day 2 with a 1 hour workout whilst on cellular and battery at 85%... I would consider that normal now.

I upgraded from a Series 3 cellular to a Series 5 cellular, and the battery life is very noticeably worse. I would say I get about an hour or more less use time on the Series 5. HOWEVER, I still don't actually kill the watch and charge it every night anyways so I guess my use case is lucky. For anyone who uses their Watch more than me, it definitely might be a deal breaker. Hopefully they can improve this with more WatchOS optimizations? Wishful thinking?
They might implement small optimizations but I would be surprised if they’re able to do very much. I’m also concerned that if the battery is being drained very low each day that the battery will need to be replaced very soon. Lithium batteries don’t live very long lives when they are depleted every day.

It seems like the only thing new with this generation is the AOD which is a software feature which kills the battery faster. This is an easy generation to skip.
