Currently, have the Gear S3 Frontier (which looks great) though I am strongly thinking about an Apple watch. It can do a few more things and a bit more responsive I believe.

T-mobile says that they have the fastest data, but mine is congested.

Some “people” say that they have great battery life, but mine is 2 times shorter compare to S4.

I think this is problem with me only :) , only with me :)))))
I “hold it wrong” LOL

I'm coming from 2 series 0 SS (regular and DLC) and a series 2 Ceramic and I really love the update. Always on display is a huge benefit to me because I also don't like having to do that wrist flip to get the face on in meetings and there is a lot of times I'm carrying things and just want to check the time but can't flip my wrist. That is one that seems minor but if I actually find myself not wanting to wear the older watches because of this (which is a first for me since I was using series 0) so it is a surprisingly big deal for me.

Also this probably doesn't matter to a lot of people but I am learning landscape photography and that compass is a real game changer for me because you can just bring your watch up and track what direction you are going. Sure you probably could have been able to do something like this with the phone but it's effortless being able to raise your wrist and instantly get a reading instead of digging your phone out and unlocking it. I have this as a complication and it's always there if you need to do a quick check. This is one I didn't even really think about when I purchased the watch but I really like it.

Ah, yes, I forgot that part from the keynote. But I don’t remember anyone saying specifically that AOD isn’t supported for 3rd party apps so I wonder what people’s experience is.
There's mixed support for even 1st party apps.

The Workout app does fine with AOD. Timer or Maps app? Blurred screen with the time of day displayed. Same for the couple 3rd party apps I just tried.

Could other apps get supported with a later OS update? Next logic step for S6? Hm... I hardly ever use the Apple workout app for working out (it’s just a bag of lack...) and would see a HUGE reason to upgrade if other/all apps could show on the AOD.

Could? Sure - as you say that is the next logical step. The big question is whether that would occur prior to WatchOS7 / Series6. I'd guess likely not for third party apps, but potentially yes for 1st party apps.

It doesn't make any sense to call it a  watch series 5 if there aren't changes except AOD.

+ Double the storage from 16GB to 32GB.
+ Electronic compass
+ International Emergency calling capability

Whether one considers those worth the cost of an upgrade or not is a personal matter, but they are distinct changes from S4->S5.

Let me add a minus (plus):
- (+) shorter battery life , or (may be someone likes frequent charging and this is a plus )

I picked up a discounted S4 while watching the early reviews for the S5. Now I’ve returned the S4, ordered a Nike S5, and now these comments about the battery life make me think I made a big mistake.

I agree, battery life is worse than S4 but so far I make it all day.

Since S3 I wear the watch to bed. I have two watches and I just alternate.

I upgraded from the Series 1 to the Series 5 and I love it. The AOD isn't a necessity, but it sure is a nice feature. I'm using the California circular face and it's terrific having customized complications in all 4 corners. Siri is also quicker -- no more lag like the S1. No battery issues for me at all.

It's ugly. That's all there is to say. I don't want an ugly watch like that on my wrist, sorry.

I had the S4 and upgraded to the S5 for the AOD. I am very happy I did upgrade. The AOD is a game changer IMO. Battery life lasts literally all day. Put my watch on yesterday at 4:30am at 100% (early flight). By 10pm when I went to bed it was at 30%, which is ~18 hours on 70% of battery. That's pretty good IMO. For those who don't like the AOD you can turn it off in settings. Additionally, there is an option to "hide sensitive complications/info" if someone is weary of that with the AOD.

5 days in and I've yet to get anywhere close to 18 hrs.

Yesterday I got 10 hrs, charged, and after 5.5 hrs it was down to about 15% battery remaining.

I'm not trying to talk you out of it. It's just a trade-off. It's no great hardship to charge the watch every night, except when I'm traveling, which I do every month or so with my family. We usually share a single charger, so it means I have to remember to switch out the watches on the charger sometime overnight.

I bought one of these and now I never run out of ports.

I’ve always found battery life to be worse after setting up a new watch or phone. Happened to me with the series 4 and every update before. Those who are just setting up the series 5, I’d like to hear your experiences after using the new watch for a few days. I’ve found battery life always improves after a few days of use.

I upgraded from an S2 to an S5 and I don't see much difference in battery life. I usually end up with 50% or more when I take it off. I turned off AOD though.

Buy an S4 on discount or patiently await the S6, should it reinvigorate the aging design.
As I see the Watch becoming more of a central device, I’m predicting Apple makes the design wider to add more horizontal screen real estate. I rendered a mock-up.

That’s a solid upgrade.

This. It pays to be patient with new Apple devices. On the first day I saw a large battery difference between the S5 and S4, by the second day it didn't seem so bad, and now on the fourth day (and fourth charge) it definitely seems to be almost if not as good as the S4. Time will tell. But I am now optimistic the battery concerns are over stated and reported.

Edit: Yes, I see this behavior with almost all new apple devices, they seem to need a couple of discharge/charge cycles to settle in. AND, on occasions where I might be still concerned with the S5 (transpacific flights for example) I can always turn off AOD in the settings. Problem solved.

Upgraded from an S2 to S5 and am very happy with it. The bigger screen is nice, it's significantly faster, and the always on display is worth it.

The battery seemed to drain a little faster than my S2 yesterday, my first full day of use, but it was still at something like 30% after about 15 hours of wear, so still plenty for a normal day's use. (It's not my workout watch anyway.) It's actually draining a little slower today, but it's possible I've been using it less. No real concerns, though.

I've read somewhere (can't remember exactly) but is there a new exclusive face for the watch Edition? I'm sure I've seen the 'California' face with an 'edition' customisation on the screen.

Hardly any of it consider as distinct changes and only lead to further confusion for the customer.

Went from an S4 to an S5. Very happy I did. The always on is great and has presented no problems what so ever regardless of where I am. The battery has been no problem so far either. I always buy aluminum so I can upgrade without feeling bad about it. The compass is nice and having a book on it with my ear pods is a real nice feature.

If you use one of the watch faces that has the "white" background that requires considerably more power because the OLED display has to illuminate all those pixels. I only use the "black" watch faces. I have numerous complications on my watch face (messages, weather, calendar, activity, etc.) and got ~18 hours on 70% of the battery yesterday. I don't use background app refresh on my phone or watch just FYI (serves no purpose and wastes phone and watch battery IMO). I have the iPhone 11 Pro and S5 GPS only paired as reference.
