This feature is technically amazing, but what are you going to use it for I can’t see why I need this.
I plan on using this feature as I would multiple displays/momitors as sidecar and other display features have lots of scaling issues.

I think we just need to use it to find out if we need it. It's fairly different. Maybe, maybe not.

But my take is yes it will be useful, unlike the Touchbar, which I sort of suspected I would never use and was a bad idea. TouchBar 'on the side' would be better, but it was a bad location.

What I wonder about is how natural it feels. Extended displays often bug this way. It's that the display is operating in a window, that if it crashes or even simply adjusting, is very annoying. This on the other hand is not like that. I like this.

i must be slow, but if you have a text creation field or app open on both devices and type on the mac keyboard, where does your typing go by default? if you move your mouse, does the cursor move on the ipad? and how far apart can the devices be?

Do both (or all) devices have to be connected to the same wifi network ?
I hard wire ethernet to my MacBook via a dongle for speed, but my ipad is connected to the same router via wifi.

I have been doing this since ages, with Synergy, Apple the Gatekeeper simply didn’t allow such kind of Software to run on the iPad.

macOS <-> Windows <-> Linux <-> Android

I’d assume focus follows the mouse

It’s very convenient for me. I can delegate tasks to my iPad without having to touch the iPad. Use it for pdfs or have it playing music to my HomePods. It’s especially helpful if your iPad doesn’t have a Magic keyboard because now you can use your MacBook’s without having to buy one.

UC looks super cool and I’m anxious to try it out but beyond the novelty I just don’t see how this will improve my workflow. ?

No more juggling multiple keyboards and mice and typing your desktop computers password into a Word doc on your laptop computer because you were looking at one screen but using a keyboard from the other.

It can save you a need for a magic keyboard on your iPad.

It makes file and data management even more seamless than AirDrop.

Hopefully some day this extends to iPhone so when I have to send an email to support in an app that only allows you to communicate from the device I can type full sentences.

I've been really looking forward to this release.

This is a security feature, you don't want random people coming close and controlling your Mac/iPad and moving files over to their devices.
Of course not, but it wouldn't be hard to implement a secure way to do this. Requiring the two Macs to pair with each other like Bluetooth devices do would work perfectly and be secure.

Apple pairs all of your Bluetooth devices through iCloud...
