I pretty much agree, but there is one thing that the Max doesn't have that the XR does...
a wide angle portrait mode for people.
In fact, from several photographer you tubers it's been shown that the XR does a better job in portrait mode on people than the XS and X phones.

That's not to say that Apple can't intro the wide angle portrait mode to the XS series at any point this year or next, but I doubt they will. They could do it now if they really wanted to, but it will probably be a feature on next year's phone. We all know how Apple works...
Well it doesn’t because it can’t provide the same level of blur because it’s computational. Obviously if you want a wider field of view then it might be better but the actual blur is done better on the Xs/max.

Lol seriously. You seriously think the XR only for those who are on a budget. That’s pretty ignorant. I had the Max. Sold it and got the XR. Also had the LG V40, Note 9, One Plus 6T , Pixel 3XL, Razer Phone 2 and Blackberry Keytwo.

Money is not always the decision to buy something. Some people go by features and what they will use or what they desire. Some may get the XR because they simply like the color. Some may get it for battery life. And yes some may get it to save money.

Personally I got the XR because I don’t see a big difference in the screens (my eyes aren’t the best) battery life is superior on the XR in how I use the phone And the phone is a nice size.

But you cannot say the XR is for those on a budget. For some yes probably. But for a ton of people it’s just a preference.
I don’t see it for people on a budget because £750 is still a lot of money and when you get to £900 for the 256GB model. That’s expensive.

There are a few features some might covert on the Xr, namely the screen size. If you find the max too big but the Xs too small, better battery life or prefer LCD to OLED or are sensitive to OLED displays.

I think there are a large majority who buy the Xr because they either don’t think the max/Xs is worth the extra money or feel that £1,000 is simply too much for a phone. I think 99 % of Xr owners can afford a max/Xs but have chosen not to buy one for whatever reason.

The reason I didn’t get the Xr was because the max was bigger and I wanted the biggest possible display. The lower resolution, the lack of dual lens camera and no 3D Touch. Obviously for may these features are not worth the extra cash. However in my mind if I was already spending £900 I was happy to spend more money to get the phone I actually wanted. If the Xr was cheaper then o would have considered it more but it’s already expensive.

I made this change.
I had a launch day Max 256gb. It’s an awesome phone. But here’s how I looked at making the switch.

1. I don’t sacrifice any screen info moving to a XR because they display the same amount of info (vs the X or XS)

2. I always struggled with the size of the Max (and plus models in the past). The XR gives me the most info in the smallest form factor.

3. Screen. At least to my eyes I can barely tell the difference with the screen. Sure blacks are slightly blacker with the Max. But i only consume media when I travel. On day to day usage there’s no impact to getting stuff done (work).

4. Battery. Is the best of any iPhone in recent memory and I’ve owned them all. It’s certainly better than the Max. I start at 6 am take a cross country flight with heavy use, not plus in the entire time and still have battery at 10 pm. It’s pretty amazing. I used to think my 7+ was the best for battery but this model beats it.

Honestly if they priced the XR above the Max I still would have bought it. I look at it as you’re basically getting a Max in a smaller size (easier to pocket) and with a better battery.

Yes you are correct. The XR is for people on a budget who want a good iphone. The max is for people that money is no object and just want that little more perfection.

Let's see...
- terrible reception/wifi issues
- video shutters
- bad QC
- low quality screen/yellow tint/very bad viewing angles

and more. Sounds like "PERFECTION" to me... not :(

...Is non-issue and shouldn’t even be addressed. There is nothing to complain about the XR bezels, when not one consumer will see the XR all-display and think “Those bezels are huge.” Especially when you’re comparing the bezels on the previous Gen iPhones to the XR.

..for me is the bigger bezel a big issue

Do you have background app refresh off?

Normally I agree with what your comments, but honestly the larger bezel is something brought up as a downside
in plenty of XR reviews. I'm not saying it's a huge deal breaker. However, when you talk about "edge to edge display", but you have that thick bezel, it's not as seamless and I think it makes the notch even more pronounced.

That said, I think Apple did as good as they could with LCD to get it as far as possible with the backlight design.

I appreciate your post. There is so much illogical bickering among forum members over the three new choices we have. I'm in your 99%. I could afford the XS and XS Max, though I preferred a larger screen of the Max over the XS. Still, I didn't see them as worth the extra money and cannot come to terms with $1000-plus for a new smartphone.

But you did see the Max as worth it for you, and that's perfectly reasonable. For your criteria, the Max works. For mine, the XR works. That's all that matters.

I recently went to a T-Mobile store and I have to say ....I really liked the XR. A lot more than expected. Really liked how lightweight it felt compared to the Max and am really attracted to the battery life. Held both the Max and XR side by side and didn’t see much of a difference. Yes, the colors are richer and the blacks are deeper, but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

I’m just wondering if the XR would be a better fit for me?

It may be a better fit for you, that's kind of a personal preference thing.

To answer your question I wouldn't give up my Max for the world. It's by far the best device I've ever had. That said, I was an 8 Plus guy before so the size/weight don't really phase me.

I switched and don't regret it at all.

To me the extra that Apple is asking for the XS/Max is not worth it. I prefer the "lower" grade LCD over the OLED. I have suffered from headaches with my launch day X that I could not figure out until after I purchased the Max and stumbled upon other users experiencing the same issues. Plus, to be honest, the screens are so close in terms of quality its just not worth it. The X/XS/XS Max has higher screen resolution, BUT, holding the phone at a normal viewing distance, its hard to justify spending the extra money for it. Yes the blacks are inkier and the colors pop a little more on the OLED, but the LCD is just as good, even at 828p. As for the bezels, geesh I am so sick and tired of hearing about the bezels. The difference is the thickness of a glass screen protector. Thats it! Get over it... Apple did a really great job on this "budget" LCD. Its super crisp, very bright, has great colors, and no PWM flickering! Color shift on my unit is very minimal, less than I have with my 7 Plus work phone.

Size, its the perfect fit. I felt as my X was a bit on the to small side, while the XS Max was the same size physically as my 7 Plus. I did not find using the Max to be all that hard to handle. My XR I find to be even easier to handle and get around with. Its really the perfect size, at least for me. The phone itself is again, thicker by about the thickness of a glass screen protector. It feels great to hold, feels just as elegant as the X/XS/Max does.

Stainless steel vs the aluminum ring. Both offer there own merits. My X showed signs of scratches on the stainless even being in a case from day 1. My buddies XS Max ring is chipping like crazy. I like the way the aluminum feels better, as it doesn't feel as slippery. Aluminum chips just as easy though.

Battery life is insane with the XR. 7 hours SOT is absurd, but I'm lovin' it, lol!

I always hated the way Apple did portrait with the X and XS phones. Move closer, mover farther. You really cannot get a great portrait with surroundings using the telephoto lens. I prefer the wide angle with the XR, even though its through software, but its still damn good. Other than that, both phones cameras are excellent.

1 less gig of ram, so what... iOS, just like MacOS has great ram management features. The SE is still just as snappy on iOS12 as the newer phones.

Speakers, both are equally as good. Between my XS Max and my XR, my Max may have been a tiny sliver of a hair louder, but nothing that maybe say wow, the XR's speakers are junk.

Price, well, I still think all of this years phones are overpriced. Samjunk included. Sales figures are showing it as well. In Japan they just lowered the price of the XR. Apple just rebooted manufacturing the X because its cheaper to make. The XR should have started at $699, the XS at $849, and the XS Max at $999. Same could be said about Apple's other products as well. The 8 series phones should have been discontinued, leaving the 7's for the budget crowd.

We all bought whichever version of the iPhone that WE saw fit for OUR needs. They are all excellent products, catering to different individual needs. I have had more people come up to me while being out to check out the XR compared to my Max when I had it. Most walked away shocked at how good the phone is. I think most people figured other than size, there wasn't much difference between last years X and this years XS/Max. All of this bickering is just plain foolish. Buy what YOU want/need. Enjoy it. I surely am...

Since the lower resolution doesn’t affect me, don’t use 3D Touch ever, don’t use optical zoom for photos, and don’t need the extra water resistance since I’m already very careful with my products, I’m just wondering if the XR would be a better fit for me?
I think you already answered your own question. If the doesn’t bother you and you don’t use 3D Touch or zoom than why wouldn’t you go for the XR?

I’ve had mine for a couple weeks now (came from an 8+) and I love it. Still getting use to no home button, but other than that all is good. I don’t see any difference in the screen and the size is perfect. Also the battery life is beyond amazing

What a ridiculous answer! My millionaire neighbor still uses a his iPhone 6! I’m hardly on a “budget” like you said us XR user are. More like I don’t need all the bells and whistles of a max and also find the max to be too big. I don’t use 3D Touch, the oled screen makes no difference to me and I don’t like using zoom on my photos, so tell me again why I should spend $350 more just to say I have the “best” iPhone when let’s be real most buy their phones on a payment plan. The superiority that some of you display , because y’all have a max/X/XS is hilarious. I guess some of y’all are lacking in other areas of your life.......

Another Youtuber ditches the MAX for XR.

He makes an outstanding point about the size of the phones - A 10S in the 10R size would have been perfect

The problem is that the Max doesn’t offer that much more functionality for that “perfection.” For example, an iPhone 8 and Apple Watch combo may cost as much as a MAX but offer much more functionality

Little late to the party, but I too decided to keep the XR after having 2 Maxes (returned both) for total of about a month. No regrets. Max just didn’t have enough features to justify the $450+tax increase over the XR. Felt like a chump to keep the Max.

Well put. They’re certainly overcompensating :)

These threads always end up elitist in nature and tend to separate people into classes. But lets be honest: aside from "PMW" and the slight differences in size, if the XS Max was $50 more than the Xr, or $100 more, would the people saying the Xr is better suddenly justify buying the XS Max? Would the people saying LCD is better than OLED no longer say that? If so, how is it that it doesn't essentially boil down to the cost?

I agree. Every single facet and feature of the iPhone XS/XR is completely dissected down on a tech forum, for _some_ who are overly pedantic about everything. The more ‘Normal’ demographic who purchases an the Max or XR, basically chooses the color, storage and uses the phone as they normally would on a daily basis without taking measurements, or using a microscope to find defects, etc. I just find it rather amusing sometimes, but makes for an interesting read on what someone finds wrong, which some reasons are valid why they would want to change phones for XYZ reasons.

I had an XS MAX and even though I loved the size I couldnt stand to think (this is a $1250 phone). By no means am I rich or poor but couldnt justify that price tag. The XR can do everything the Max did minus the use of 3D touch (they did bring haptic touch to notifications which is good). So for me the price was the main factor. I am with Tmobile so say next year they tweak it (since this year was a 's' version and modify the design more then I can upgrade with out feeling bad. I am more concerned with IOS still being what it is today. Yes they made improvements and this year was the year of performance but it but IOS 13 needs to bring the revamp to its homescreen and functions.

LOL if u dont notice those things, then they shouldnt matter if theyre there or not in the first place.

Hence, keep the Xs since you already have it and call it a day..

Better things to think about.
Like how many cores your next Mac Pro will have;)

I am another that had the option to stick with the Xs Max or go with the Xr and when I weighed it out and used them both I decided that the $450 was just not worth the price of admission. 128gb Xr vs 256gb Max. Don't get me wrong I think he Max is an excellent phone in every way. But given that I had also purchased an Apple Watch S4, sticking with the Xr put me spending the same amount with two devices. Totally enjoy using both the Xr and S4 in combination. I have never for even a single moment regretted returning the Xs Max. I do think at the end of the day we each have to get what we feel is most feasible when it comes to features/benefits vs cost. Let's face it you can't go wrong with any of these phones.

I don't think this needs to be a back and fourth about which one we each think is better. I am satisfied with my choice and I want everyone else to be as well.
