That was an awesome video. He’s a pretty funny guy. He’s got a point. I went back and forth on whether to replace my 7 Plus with an XS or XR and after trying both out, I went with the XR. The differences were so minute I personally could not justify the cost upgrade vs the XS, let alone the XS Max. This guy is among now several YouTubers who have replaced their XS Max with the XR. All things bejng equal of course I would have taken the XS/XS Max, but all things aren’t equal.
There are plenty of technical reasons but I understand your opinion. If cost is the only issue for you, there is zero technical reason to move to an Xr.
To me the bezels are way bigger on the Xr
What technical reasons??There are plenty of technical reasons but I understand your opinion.
It is a waste of time. You have your opinion. This thread as covered the differences. You stated there are none. I disagree. Both are opinions. What technical reasons??
Let's see...
- terrible reception/wifi issues
- video shutters
- bad QC
- low quality screen/yellow tint/very bad viewing angles
and more. Sounds like "PERFECTION" to me... not![]()
There is no pink shift with the XR.Some of this boils down to quality control and software issues.
I've had zero reception or wifi issues, or bad viewing angles on the XS Max.
My reception and call quality is noticeably better actually than my previous 6S+ with a Qualcomm modem even though those are supposedly better than the new phones that have Intel. I switched carriers though too, so I want to be honest about that (TMobile to Verizon).
So take your pick...pink shift (XR) or blue shift (XS); both phones can have an off axis shift, OLED has proven to have better viewing angles but most people stare at their phones only from a very limited angle anyway, it's not a TV.
The XR was noted to have "pink shift" by Nilay from The Verge. Some here think reviewers are sent different and more perfect units, but that can easily be proven to be incorrect.
I recently went to a T-Mobile store and I have to say ....I really liked the XR. A lot more than expected. Really liked how lightweight it felt compared to the Max and am really attracted to the battery life. Held both the Max and XR side by side and didn’t see much of a difference. Yes, the colors are richer and the blacks are deeper, but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.
Since the lower resolution doesn’t affect me, don’t use 3D Touch ever, don’t use optical zoom for photos, and don’t need the extra water resistance since I’m already very careful with my products, I’m just wondering if the XR would be a better fit for me?
I think you could eventually get a good price for it.Man if I can get a decent price on my xs max unlocked I would totally get the XR. But right now people aren’t willing to pay $1200 (my asking price) cash.
HmmmmI sold my Max (it had a scratch) and got the XR. I was happier with the Max to be honest. I miss 3D Touch, OLED, telephoto camera and bigger screen/thiner bezels.
maybe. I just got an iPad Pro so I don’t really need a super big phone lol. Ayiyiyi I need a life. 1st world problems right here. Raises hand.I think you could eventually get a good price for it.
There is no pink shift with the XR.
I have seen pink shift with the X and XS and the XR is not even in the ballpark with this color shift. I have checked several XR and just checked mine again. EVERY phone will have a change in lighting and display based on viewing angles. The X/XS/XSM literally can go pink/yellow/blue from viewing in-hand to flat on a table.
Also, why do people talk about off-axis viewing? Who does this and those that do, how frequently? Who watches a 6” screen turned sideways?
Well said.
So tired of this elitist attitude towards the XR. Yeah it costs less. So what. Not everyone is motivated to buy something because it costs less. In the grand scheme of things most people with a shred of common sense are not going to let $10 or less a month motivate their decision. I can afford the Max. I just didn't feel the need to get one. The OLED screen doesn't impress me. The single lens shooter works just fine. It worked great on my Pixel 2 XL. I never used 3D touch on my 7+. On top of that the XR felt the best in my hand out of the three. So why just because I can afford an XS or Max should I get one if it doesn't fit my needs?? Has zero to do with money. Yeah I'm sure there are many people that will see all three phones and go for the cheapest. Doesn't mean they can't afford the higher priced phones. They just don't feel the need to spend the extra money.
I think the displays on the X line and XR are both great. For ME.. I prefer the characteristics of the LCD. I did not like editing photos and the temp of the image looking different based on how I held the phone.Color shift is a non issue to me personally on either device, but some people seem to think that it's a justification to trash talk the OLED iPhones in favor of the XR, hence why I addressed that person in the quote above.
There's an example of this pink shift with a clip in the link below. A forum member brought it up as well here.
"The iPhone XR LCD definitely shifts a little pink and drops brightness quickly when you look at it off-axis, which often leads to a bit of a shimmery effect when you move the phone around".
Nilay also noted that there is more off-axis shifting going on with the XR than the 8 Plus:
"Apple told me the XR display should match previous iPhone LCDs in terms of performance, but side by side with an iPhone 8 Plus, the off-axis shifts are definitely more pronounced."

It is hard to find in print.. but I think it was Phil on stage explaining (at the time with the 7+) how Apple uses data from both the wide and zoom lenses when you take a normal non-zoomed picture. I personally don’t like this. I like one lens, one set of data for the image. Another selling point, for me, for the XR.Exactly this. The Xr comes in great colors, has better low-light photography, and better battery life. The Xs Max has its own advantages. For me, the Xr is the better phone, period, because I happen to value its strengths, but options are a good thing.

Sounds like the Max was a better fit for you. Are you planning to sell the XR to buy back a Max?
I honestly never even knew about preview links. I tried it on XS and it didn’t seem like something I would use. For ‘portrait’ pictures I use my Fuji.Maybe, in case I don’t get used to it. It’s kinda frustrating when you can’t take a portrait photo of your pet with bokeh or preview links when reading/browsing the web. However I don’t feel like spending several hundreds of euros again as I’d have to put an extra of 400€ on top of the XR resell value.
