The Nvidia 4x AGP geforce fx go5200 32MB DDR graphics card in my 12" powerbook g4 1Ghz running 10.4.11 runs this monitor over DVI at it’s optimum 2048x1152 right out of the box with no problems. This card supports only single link DVI, but the DVI on this monitor is also single link, which one immediately sees from inspecting the DVI cable that comes with it. It also works well at 1920x1080. I also tried the VGA interface and was unable to detect any obvious difference while surfing or wordprocessing. I’m also able to run the webcam using Skype. The viewing angles on this monitor are a bit on the small side. I haven’t noticed the high frequency hum that some have said occurs when brightness is adjusted downwards.

Dell 2309W or Dell 2409W?

I have seen specials running online for the 23" for $259 (USD) and the 24" for $279. I'm assuming both are glossy (which I, frankly, prefer). If someone knows different, please let me know. The descriptions are somewhat vague.

Does anyone have some pictures to post? I thought Spaceball mentioned he would.

My only wish is that they could rotate into portrait mode. The models I have seen with that capability seem to run $100 more, and I cannot justify the expense. Again, if someone has seen a Dell or HP with that capability and running in the mid to high $200's, please drop me a line.

my Dell SP2309W webcam works with on MBPro 4,1 with iChat, Skype, Dell Video chat, ooVoo, Yahoo! messenger quite well. With a bit of tweaking, I can get it to work with PhotoBooth (just have to "trick" it by setting pref pane iChat to use the built-in iSight and leave it open whilst opening PhotoBooth).

The only downside is getting a setting adjustment software for it, though I'll check and see if the Samsung equivalent has one for Mac.

Not sure which to advise you on but keep in mind we are not talking about the 2309W or 2409W - This is the SP2309W which has a far higher resolution and a few other integrated niceties.

Thanks for the follow-up.

I think I will jump on the special for the 23" with the USB hub and webcam. I have confirmed it is glossy and does HDMI (if I ever opt to use it to watch movies from a Blue Ray player, etc.). Best of all, it's cheaper.

I just got this screen, hooked up to the macbook seen in my signature.
Spaceballl,

1. Does your MacBook natively support the monitor's full resolution of 2048 x 1152 or are you having to use an alternate resolution?

2. Have you been able to get the monitor's built-in video camera to work with your MacBook?

3. You mentioned having purchased this on eBay. Who was the seller, how was your experience, and how did the "live.com" coupon work?

4. Have you purchased the Dell Soundbar to go with the monitor? If so, how is it?

Thanks in advance for your help.
:) Thinkn

1. I'm running it at it's full 2048x1152 resolution
2. The webcam works, though it only seems to work if the monitor and webcam usb are plugged in before the laptop is turned on. Even if you shut your monitor off, you need to restart your macbook before the webcam works again (kind of annoying)
3.n/a
4. No I didn't.

Really really great screen though. I'll post pictures once i get some taken.

3. You mentioned having purchased this on eBay. Who was the seller, how was your experience, and how did the "live.com" coupon work?
Well, from what I understand, the coupon is no longer valid on eBay. But basically there was a deal that if you went to live.com, searched for something, and then used the link there to go to eBay to buy anything with buy-it-now, you would get 35% cashback. The cashback took forever to post, but it was valid. Made this monitor a GREAT deal for me. I really love it. I don't play games on my monitor (that's what my HDTV is for) so I can't complain about it being a TN panel, but I have no dead pixels and coding has never been easier!

I said i would post pics, and I just attached this pic to a different thread, but for those still looking, here is the monitor / my setup.

Wow, i dont know how i missed this thread, but i had no idea about this monitor! I recently bought a G5 PowerMac that came with a X800XT card that had DVI and ADC. The G5 came with a 20" Apple acrylic and I was just about to buy a 22" apple adc (because its the biggest i could fit on my desk) mint in box from a seller on ebay for $275 shipped. But wow, this dell's specs are awesome (and over all width is smaller too!) For only $10 more! I just ordered it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Enjoy!

I found a cool ultra-small USB hub that can hook into the back of the monitor as well. You can't see it and it adds 3 ports. I got it on ebay so just do a search, if you're interested.

I ordered it on Tuesday and it came Fed-Ex on wednesday for $3 shipping. I didnt realise i was so close to OWC . As far as the Dell goes, its awesome. Thanks for pointing it out!

Okey, so here's the deal:

I recently got (borrowed) an lcd tv (yes TV) from a family member to try out as a dual screen solution with my macbook. I start college in the autumn and was going to get a display after I moved there, but after trying the display out I really want one now.

So I have been searching around and found this dell to be exactly was I was looking for. But I'm torn between getting this now (and it's my birthday next week) or waiting 6 months time to get a display when i start college. I figure I need a display now, cause even though I can borrow the lcd tv until I move out it's not exactly what I'm looking for in monitor quality and input capability (have to play xbox 360 on rca if i want to play it in my room XD) and I'm not too sure it's soo good for my eyes. BUT, if I wait 6 months, what do you guys think the near future of LCD displays have to offer in terms of product/price ratio?

But still this sp2309W comes at a great price and I can always upgrade or buy an additional display in 6 months time...

I recently purchased the SP2309W and received it last week (Thursday). It works great. Unfortunately I can really tell the difference in quality (being a TN panel) between this and my last LCD. But it was within my budget, so I knew what I was getting (and am quite happy with it).

I only found two downsides with it:
1. Webcam only works if monitor is plugged in and turned on before you bootup the Mac. If you turn off the monitor at any time (which I do - since I rarely shutoff my Mac - nightly backups, etc) then you lose the webcam until you reboot the OS again (something I don't like to do). So I'm not using the webcam (it's a MBP, so I'll just stick with the iSight for now). Many forums suggest trying iUSBCam to solve this problem, but the software didn't make a difference for me (I've only tried the 7-day trial software). If someone was able to solve this using iUSBCam (or something else), please share your experience (maybe it was user error).
2. I use this LCD primarily for programming. The fonts aren't as crisp as I like (the best I could do was to go into the monitor's display settings and change the sharpness from it's default setting of 50% to either 40 or 30 (currently I'm sticking with 40). Then I had to increase font sizes in most of my programs (I like my fonts small so I can fit more on the screen - but I guess I was spoiled too much with my last Samsung LCD (btw, the SP2309W is also made by Samsung) which was much more crisp). Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I'm just adjusting :)

Monitor runs great with video games (2ms response time == teh fun) - used boot camp to play Left4Dead and TF2 and it was great at the native resolution. I even tried hooking the display up to my older PC laptop on both the VGA and DVI. Both VGA and DVI were happy using native resolution of 2048x1152.

Last, I hooked up my PC laptop to VGA port and MBP to DVI port and was able to switch between them as needed (the way I did with my 6+ year old Samsung 19" 4:3 monitor). The only thing I haven't tried yet is the HDMI port (I don't really need it, but am interested to try it. Maybe I'll hook my xbox 360 up to it to see how it goes).

Ok, i seem to be having a problem and i dont know if its the Dell or the Ati x800xt card. Every few days and only while the screen saver is active i come to my mac and find this on the screen (the box is when i press the dells menu button) basically white with slight colored lines running top to bottom across the entire screen.

Now, if i turn off the dell and turn it right back on all is fine. And its not every day or every time the screen saver is active just about once a week or so. I ran the apple hardware test and all passed except the ati x800xt is not stock so it wont test that.
I really dont want to have to ship it back if i dont have to. Suggestions?

thanks
Bill

Man that's an annoying problem. I hate troubleshooting things that aren't 100% consistent. Looks like the only way you're going to be able to tell is to either swap a graphics card or a monitor and see if the issue persists... Bummer....

Does anyone have any recommendations for good calibration settings for this monitor? Or just some good (free) tools to do it?

Give this free calibration util a try - http://www.bergdesign.com/supercal/

BTW, I just got my Dell SP2309W from OWC. Great resolution and price, and no dead pixels, too! I tried my PS3 on it via HDMI last night, and it was so crisp! The TN display does manifest some minor color shifting, but that's to be expected.

Also, I think I read something about OS X scanning for the webcam on boot and then never again. So you need to install the above app if you want to use iChat. But if you want to use it with skype, the key is to turn on the monitor first, have it plugged in and ready to go with your mac shut down, and THEN boot up the mac. Then I believe the cam should work (but you need the above app to make it work w/ iChat)
