Anyone reading this thread because they are on the fence about the Dell or Samsung version of this panel, don't forget that this is a TN panel.

Don't be seduced by the fine dot pitch; if you can't live with the suspect color reproduction and limited viewing angle of a TN panel, either come up with some more money to buy a decent 24" *va or ips monitor

or

drop down an inch and get the Dell 2209WA, which you can snag for a measly $212 + tax.

Trust me, if you are shopping online you won't see for yourself what I'm talking about, so don't get taken by the specs, price and good Newegg reviews on cheap TN panels.

I bet a lot of you aren't thinking about TN, PVA, MVA, IPS when looking at these big, inexpensive monitors. You'll be much happier spending the extra cash or settling for the 22" Dell I mentioned.

Hopefully the panel makers are about done with the "TN is good enough for the masses" mentality and start cranking out more of the affordable IPS monitors like the new Dell.

Also, most of these TN panels are 6 bit color instead of 8. Read the fine print.

I took a look at the 2209WA. The resolution is MUCH lower. I think people can do plenty of searching to figure out if they need the better viewing angles / color reproduction of IPS panels. For me, I'm just looking for a really sharp display with lots of screen real estate. The SP2309W really delivers quite well.

Agreed. In the case of the 2209WA, people will have to decide if they can live with 1680x1050. If they're not doing hardcore image or video editing or watching Blu Ray, I think it's a viable option. If not, a decent 24" can be found for just under $600

or

knowing and accepting the limitations of TN panels, pick a good one and go that way.

The reason I made my initial post wasn't to belittle anyone who thought these 23" 2048x1152 monitors were nice, but to point out the TN vs better technology issue. Most people are unaware of the issue.

I said i would post pics, and I just attached this pic to a different thread, but for those still looking, here is the monitor / my setup.

Spaceball, I dig your setup and I am thinking about getting this monitor. Also where did you get that stand for your MBP? That looks like a must have as well for dual screening.

Yep I can confirm it's the mstand. Slightly overpriced, but dead sexy. Only issue is the hole in the back isn't big enough for a DVI cable. So here's the workaround. Go to monoprice and get an HDMI->DVI cable. The HDMI portion is small enough to fit through the back hole and luckily for us, the SP2309W handles HDMI just fine :D.

Just a note that if you are planning on buying the Dell AX510 Sound Bar Speaker for the SP2309W,

you will also require the Dell AC Power Adapter AS501 as the SP2309W has no monitor power for the sound bar.

macbook compatibility?

Are the monitors mentioned in this thread compatible with a Unibody Macbook? I would need some sort of mini Display Port adaptor to connect to these monitors? Definitely looking to purchase a monitor now that I'm done with school and won't have to move the macbook around a lot now.

Ok, i seem to be having a problem and i dont know if its the Dell or the Ati x800xt card. Every few days and only while the screen saver is active i come to my mac and find this on the screen (the box is when i press the dells menu button) basically white with slight colored lines running top to bottom across the entire screen.

Now, if i turn off the dell and turn it right back on all is fine. And its not every day or every time the screen saver is active just about once a week or so. I ran the apple hardware test and all passed except the ati x800xt is not stock so it wont test that.
I really dont want to have to ship it back if i dont have to. Suggestions?

thanks
Bill

Could you use this with the new Mini's and is the web cam compatible with OSX? http://accessories.dell.com/sna/pro...tdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&cs=cadhs1&sku=320-7976
You should probably start another thread about that, as you're asking about a different product.

However, if the webcam works like it does on the SP2309W, then yes it will work with OS X. However, it needs to be on and plugged into the computer from the time the computer boots up - weird bug / oddity. And the monitor you list will work with the new minis.

I havent been able to resolve the issue. Happens very infrequently now, I'm wondering if i have the X800XT slightly too overclocked? Either way, if my card dies the replacement will tell me if that was the problem or if the lcd dies its got a 3 year warranty. I wouldnt let what is happening to mine prevent someone from buying it, its quite awesome.

I've managed to secure another X800XT video card for testing purposes and i will swap them out this weekend and monitor for the "snow screen" i've been getting ( which is actually happening more frequently in the past month or so). I'll post my findings next week.

One of you mentioned having a ps3, do you use it on the monitor? ps3 is 1080p right? Or at least blu ray is, how does that show up on the screen? Does it stretch out and look weird or just have a black frame around the 1:1 pixels?

Thanks

Picture-in-picture or side-by-side?

Could someone who owns the SP2309W reply and tell me if the monitor will display video from two sources at once? Ideally, I'd be able to watch TV via HDMI and have the desktop over DVI...

Also, how hard is it (i.e. number of button presses) is it to toggle between inputs?

It may be similar to my S2409W, where mine has 3 inputs:

VGA
DVI
HDMI

At max, you have four clicks on one button to change sources, as there's an automatic detection source as well. So clicking the one button will go from:

Auto
VGA
DVI
HDMI

If they are similar, could you tell me if yours will do picture-in-picture or side-by-side viewing? For example, Mac desktop via DVI and then a small window in the corner of the display showing something like TV coming from the HDMI .

No it does not do that. It's one source at a time. I don't know of any computer monitors that do that.

belvdr already responded, but to add to what he wrote, i've had no problem switching between TV and computer signals (HDMI and DVI). The TV looks pretty good on the monitor as well.
