Apple's competitors became complacent, not Apple
I switched from a smart phone which included copy&paste, MMS and optional voice navigation to an iPhone. Why? Because the companies which provided those features became complacent. If you still want those features, you can still buy those smart phones.
On the other hand, Apple wasn't complacent, and provided features that I find far more valuable instead. More than 10M other people agree. Apple has been putting their R&D money into features which will sell more phones to people like me, not features that ended up selling less phones, like Apple's complacent competitors.
I don't expect MMS will ever sell a lot more phones. But AT&T might allow MMS to be added if they can raise the rates they charge for using MMS high enough to make it extremely profitable. And some form of clipboard may eventually be supported to gain important sales in the enterprise market.
