Really??? They still update the A8 on the HD model that I have. What makes you think they are gonna cut off the 4K CPU?

No way they'll cut off updates for the A10X anytime soon. Heck, they still sell the A8 in the AppleTV HD as well as in the OG HomePod!

If you have the Chromecast output resolution set to 4k 60 and the video's frame rate is 4k 23.976, the Chromecast will internally change the framerate to 60. This came cause judder and dropped frames. Not everyone can detect it but some can and it bothers them because the video isn't smooth.
I’ve since heard Google’s “Chromecast with GoogleTV” also doesn’t output HDR correctly, like the black levels are wrong or something, and things look washed out, something like that.

I THINK roku ultra can change both frame rate and hdr (initially everything I was reading acted like it left hdr on all the time, but I THINK it can be set to only use hdr for actual hdr content).

sounds like Roku ultra probably does better image quality than FireTV cube.

apple doesn’t do 24fps content correctly from what I’ve read, something about doing 23.9x instead of 24 or vice versa. And MAYBE they’ll actually update it next Tuesday as per that rumor on the front page.

I need a streaming device desperately and am still so confused 🤦🏻‍♀️

If one of you guys buy an Apple TV now it may just alter reality enough to make the tuesday announcement become about an updated TV

My Mini 4 (A8) will lose updates from iOS15, I think? My iPod Touch 6 (A8) stopped at iOS 12. But the iPod Touch runs at a slower speed. So I don't think it's just about the year of the chip, rather what can be done with it. I remember a review saying that the ATV4 was underpowered and the ATV4k overpowered for the time they came out.

The Mini 4 is as slow as a snail. When I upgraded to the Mini 5 a year ago its 4 times faster.

That sounds like something I would say, except for one thing...

The A8 in the ATV4 was underpowered at launch for what it was rumored to do.

Prior to the ATV4 Launch, there was many rumors that the ATV4 was going be a "console killer", with hardware that was capable of Xbox 360 quality graphics, and controller support.

When the ATV4 launched, with the underpowered A8 (for gaming), Siri Remote requirement, 200MB app static storage limits, and having Crossy Roads demoed, it was clear that Apple did not have console-like gaming in mind for the ATV4 and tvOS.

But.......

ATV4k overpowered for the time they came out.
For a 1080p streaming box, the A8 was plenty fast, and still way faster than the cheaper competition.

Apple typically continues to provide SW support for 5 years after the product is discontinued, so I think the ATV4 and especially the ATV4K is safe for now.

Another thing to keep in mind is that once Apple drops SW support for a device, it doesn't turn into a brick. It can still be used.

My iPod Touch 6 (A8) stopped at iOS 12.
It may not be able to get never iOS versions, but Apple still provides minor SW updates to the iPod Touch 6. The lasted SW update was released a month ago.

Apple's neglect of Apple TV came home to bite them REAL bad during the pandemic. Gaming consoles sold by the bazillions as people were stuck at home. My kids think Apple TV games are THE worst there are. I had to buy them a second console to help get them through constant home confinement. Apple could have been a leader here, but they utterly dropped the ball. Big time.

It’s almost as though Apple doesn’t already have two very popular gaming devices out there in the market - the iPhone and the iPad.

I know, right? I was SURE apple wasn’t updating it this year. I’ve I guess pretty much settled on a Chromecast with google tv, and then THIS, making me think I should delay my purchase to...Tuesday, I guess.

if I wait, apple isn’t going to release anything until next November.

if I buy a chromecast or Apple TV today or tomorrow, then guaranteed apple releases a $150 M1 powered AppleTV with a sensibly designed remote (with real batteries!), built in Siri like the Amazon FireTV cube, and 4-8gb Ram, and/or possibly a $100 model with worse but updated specs.

with apple having to get chips for the new iPhones, iPad Air, and MacBooks, I can see where maybe they have a limited number of chips, if this is going to use a new chip.

even an a12x would be a gigantic upgrade though, obviously, and give it another 2-ish years of support.

Buying a 4 year old s chip from a company that mostly dumps cpusmafter 5 years...meh 😂

Apple may never release another ATV.

Is there something that the Chromecast has over the ATV4K that interest you?

There has been a few threads like this, so I might have already said this already, but even at three years old, the ATV4K is the best streaming device out there. The newest from the competition might have some features that the ATV4K doesn't, just as the newer HDMI standard, but overall, the ATV4K is still the best you can get. The A10X is faster than the chips in the newest competitions' devices.

If the only argument one has is that they don't want to spend $$$ for three year old tech, I personally thing that shouldn't matter and not really a logical way of looking at the situation, but an emotional reaction.

But, I could totally understand an argument asking why pay the cost of an ATV4K when the much cheaper competition can do all the streaming apps that the ATV4K can do.

Bottom line, if you need a device now, just get something now, Apple or otherwise. Apple could release a new ATV tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, or even never. If you keep waiting for something, you will just be missing out in the meantime.

I think the main concern is that the A10X is going to get cut off from updates soon so it makes the AppleTV a risky buy.
They still update my A5-powered Apple TV 3rd gen. And the A5 in that model is specialized and cut down to 1 CPU core, rather than 2. So, the A10X will still get support for many years.

Which kind-of makes my point about what you use it for. In my case, I use my Mini 4 for downloading photos from my Nikon D90 to view or push into the cloud for sharing; or for connecting to my TV for streaming; or for music (see below).

True - you still get the odd security update, which is good. I'm assuming my SE 1 will also soon be classed as 'old', although it too works well. Coincidentally I will have to upgrade my Touch as my 64Gb one is practically full now. I'm hoping the slightly faster chip in the Touch 7 means I can stop using my Mini 4 to stream BBC Sounds downloads (they buffer on the Touch 6, so I'm using the Mini).

Do you have a Mac?

Getting impatient. I need a new Apple TV 4K box. Waiting until Tuesday if they will be announcing a new one. If not, I will just buy the current one.

I found some twitter rumours and posted them here:

I guess we will know in a few days, but I am unsure if I would trust LeaksApplePro.com with rumors, when they can't even get known facts rights:
LeaksApplePro said:
Today, LeaksApplePro has also stated that the classic Apple TV HD will be taken offsale with the refresh of the 4K Apple TV. This may be primarily due to the fact that the the Apple TV HD does not receive updates anymore

Maybe someone should leak to LeaksApplePro.com that the Apple TV HD does in fact still gets updates and is on the same OS version (14.2) as the Apple TV 4K.
