I use Installous when I want to test an app before purchasing it...max I keep it on my phone is a week. After that I either purchase or delete.

I sleep very well at night.

Sleeping well simply indicates having no conscience. What's your point?

I think this is a crap of an excuse. I buy a ton of apps and games, and to be fair, if I am still using them after a week, it's a rarity. If I drop a dollar on an app and I use it for a couple of hours one night, I call that a good investment, much better than a 3 or 4 dollar beer that lasts 15 minutes. If I subscribed to your theory, there are a ton of developers that would be missing out on revenue from me because I was just "testing it".

Perhaps they should offer Lite options (yes in some cases the lite option may not increase revenue but ads should help somewhat offset that) but if you look at Words With Friends...great app, used the free version for a long time and they were making money on ads. I do own the paid version now. If you have a quality app then your good and you will make money off of it.

Again yes it's only $0.99 but perhaps Apple should offer a 24 return fee (minus their 30%). This will give the developer some incentive to improve their program if they notice people are asking for refunds.

If you don't mind tossing money left and right then send me an IM and I'll give you my paypal.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with the consensus here. I also use installous, but not in a bad way. There are so many crap applications being put out (probably the majority) that I would have never purchased had I been able to try them first.

I'll give you an example of my use. There are around 5 different travel apps that i thought "may" meet my needs. They range in price from $4.99 to $9.99. Instead of blowing $25 to $50 to figure out which "ONE" app was right for me, I downloaded all five from using Installous.

I try all five for a few days. Decide which one I want. Delete all five and then go to the app store and purchase the one I decided I like. I see nothing wrong with this.

The problem with not getting to try before you buy is that there are sooo many: 1) crappy apps being put out, 2) so many app reviews being paid for or written by the app developer, 3) so many stories of app developers not responding to your problems or inquiries, 4) apps that cause my phone to crash. The list goes on and on.

I just don't think its fair to use the "herd" mentality to jump on anyone who uses installous. Like most other things in this world, there will always be those who abuse the system. I find it hard to believe, that if everyone used installous the way i do, one person on these boards would complain that installous is a bad thing.

It's like the gun haters. There are great uses for guns. When someone is murdered with a gun, its not the guns fault or the gun that is bad, its the person using it.

Justify it how you want. If the developer wants to they can put out a lite version of the app to allow you to try it. You are stealing the application, plain and simple. No matter how you word it.

I understand people who are unhappy with stealing apps of people like the poster in here who isn't making money due to piracy, but I get my MLB,NBA, and NFL apps through installous, and I don't feel guilty about it at all. YES, they deserve the billions of dollars they have, but my 10 bucks isn't going to impact them, and I get a free app. Win Win. Is it different than walking into a store and stealing a product? I guess not, but it feels a lot different....

IOW, the person/people who wrote and support Installous will be changing it to only provide a time limited crack to applications.

Yeah, right.

Agreed, but I wouldn't purchase the app without trying it first... So they aren't going to make any money of me either way, unless I want the app after using it.. If it was an actual product that they had to make ONE for every ONE customer, I'd be with you 100%, but it's not.

Haha, so just because a corporation is successful, they don't "need" your money? And you can steal because you are just one person? Good thing everybody doesn't think like that...

Thanks for the condolences, guys. If you're making an app, do everything possible to keep out the pirates for the first few months. They're key.

My game's name is Sproing, and it was the first Snood-like game in the store, so it's pretty old now, but got great reviews. My sales are low, so I haven't updated in a long while. I appreciate the sentiment, but I wouldn't recommend a purchase. I doubt I'll make any major changes, I'm working on coming up with a new idea instead.

I guess you have a right to be pissed. I wanted to try to make a mathematical keyboard before, then I found out that one already exists. How does it work anyway? Does apple take a cut of every app downloaded? Is it free to upload?

First off, I AGREE with you.. I'm just admitting I do it.. What you say is right, but I look at pirating Music, or APPs differently from stealing actual property. I would never steal something from anyone, and I would never steal from a store.. Now I know you're going to come back and tell me it's the same thing, and I really have no argument to refute you, but it is what it is!

Have you ever downloaded a song for free? I've downloaded thousands of songs for free.. Stealing? I guess, but I'm stealing something that's been paid for over, and over, and over again.. Not an actual product.

First - I think that people arguing about this on the forum is the dumbest thing possible.

people that hate piracy and theft will never convince those that pirate and steal to do otherwise, regardless of what morals they have, or what morals they claim the thieves are missing.

Second - your argument is god awful.

I wont pay because it has been paid for already by someone else? really? thats what you came up with to back it up?

third - installous EXISTS - torrents EXIST - they will not cease to exist simply because you berate people that use them.

give it a rest. if you dont steal software, music etc then good for you - sleep with a clear conscious. if you dont, then that sucks for developers but you aren't going to stop anyway, so whats the point?

these threads will just go on and on and accomplish nothing.

I gotta say, I'm a full scale capitalist and believe in peeps making money for their products, I have no problem w that. That being said it's the developers duty to secure their product, you cant expect all consumers to pay if they can get it just as easily for free just because it's the "right thing to do". No I'm not defending it, I'm just being a realist, Market forces include the risk of theft.

That's said, I never pay for apps because I don't download the ones that cost money in te first place, the only exception was a Russian card game called durak which I dled 2 years ago and play to this day, best $2.99 or so I've ever spent.

People should obey the rules and not talk about piracy, including Installous on MR. Problem solved. But then, pirates don't follow rules because they think they know best.

Okay. So, I manage to get into your house and steal a bunch of your stuff and get away without being caught. Then I give that stuff to a bunch of my friends with them knowing it was stolen.

That's okay for me to do because you did not secure your house well enough? And my friends are blameless too???

I think your missing my point. It's not about ok, it's about reality, I cant expect everyone not to be a burglar, the only thing I can do is do my best to protect my stuff.

P.s. I have an hk .45 loaded w hollowpoints for security purposes, skip my house and go to the neighbours. :-D

I totally agree! I usually go to the grocery or liquor store to buy a drink. I normally open 5 different bottles to try them to figure out which "ONE" drink was right for me. I then purchase the one I decided I liked. So it's all good! :p

It was depressing, to say the least. It was about 6 months of work in my free time. I did OK, but not as well as I could have.

Well, you have an up-front $100 fee to Apple for installing apps on the device and access to the app store. Without paying that fee, you can get the dev kit but you're stuck in the simulator on your Mac. Apple takes 30% of whatever you make.

It's actually not a bad deal, but you better have confidence you can make at least $100 or are willing to spend it to develop an app you yourself would like to use.

What's with all the talk of piracy lately? There's a new thread everyday with heated debate over the same issue over and over again.

Support the developers and don't pirate, unless the application is MyWi.

It's not the same... But whatever, you're so above everyone... Ever had someone burn a CD for you? Criminal!

Yeah I can defiantly see why that would be depressing. I doubt I'll be writing any programs anytime soon, i'm no programmer by any means, but I was in my pre calc class back then and wanted to text someone some kind of algebraic equation. Obviously this wasn't so easy to do since the only way to get all the mathematical symbols (as far as I knew then) was to copy and paste them from somewhere in the internet. So I thought about playing around with it, and making a keyboard just like the regular ones but with algebraic symbols instead of letters. There already is some pretty crappy version of that in the app store which I found later, and theres ikeyex in cydia which doesn't seem to work with the later OS versions, so I guess its still technically possible to make.

Anyway, I thought it was an interesting idea, but I doubt I will be doing it. If someone makes it well Ill gladly pay a few bucks for it, its useful for students, and since just about every student has an iPhone I think it would be pretty successful (except when it starts getting pirated that is heh).

F123D,
Totally different story. How about this one; you order an expensive bottle of wine at dinner and it taste awful. I'm sure you fully expect either not to pay for it, or to to be able to change your order.

Try that with with most of the app developers.

Unless there is something wrong with the bottle of wine, you will still be paying for it despite not liking it.
