I am beginning to question, if I were to pay for the express shipping. Would my package have gone a different route from shanghai to calgary? I just don't see any other way this package could have gone by looking at all the available flights? I can't help but think the express shipping method is just a cash cow for apple...

nope. if you look on your tracking info you should be expedited shipping, whether or not you paid for it.
UPS told me that they don't have standard shipping for any of their packages from China. also told me that there is nothing I could've done to have it shipped faster.

FDX90 left Shanghai at 11:14PM April 19th CST and was in the air when the 3:20AM April 20th flight (whatever flight that is) left Shanghai.

These pesky time zones. You'd think the sun could be on all at once or not at all instead of always on somewhere.

WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!

I ordered my 15" i7 MBP with 7200rpm HDD on April 13th and it is STILL in China!

My macbook hasn't even left China yet and I paid for 2-3 day shipping. I have no idea how they are going to get it here by my arrival date of the 21st. This sucks

It's possible that your MBP will be on FDX28 leaving Shanghai in 10 hours. It could arrive in Anchorage noon tomorrow and be on a flight to Memphis at 4:00PM. The flight lands in Memphis at 12:30AM in time to get on a regional flight to where you live. So it is possible they'll get it to you on your scheduled date of the 21st. Just keep a lookout for a tracking status change in 10 hours.

It'll most likely be a FedEx flight to Anchorage some time tomorrow morning. Currently not listed by FlightAware, but i'm sure they will be.

3:20AM is NOT when the flight left, just when it was scanned. It can be several hours before the plane actually leaves.

No, that would conflict with the estimated delivery on Wed 21st before 10am (and the tracking shows that it's on schedule). I think FlightAware does not show all Fedex flights. We'll know tomorrow.

True, we don't know what the flight is so it could be on or around the departure time or, like you said, it could be before it takes off.

Read the link in my signature. With the 11:14PM timestamp, I'm 90% certain your MBP is on FDX90 PVG-MEM, and will land in Memphis in less than half an hour. I don't think it's in China anymore...but it could be, we won't know until after the flight lands!

Still not seeing any flights on Flight Aware that match a Shanghai departure early Tuesday morning local time. Either there's a flight not yet on the website, or maybe the 0320 scan simply means the shipment got loaded on a waiting aircraft at that time? If the next outbound Fedex flight to either ANC or MEM leaves as usual, it should fly out at around 0900-1000 EST on the 20th.

Um, that leaves plenty of time for wednesday. arrives in anchorage in the morning (alaska time), ships to memphis in the afternoon, and to your regional centre overnight, then out for delivery.

...FDX90 has started its descent into the Memphis area. Please fasten your hopes for a new MBP and prepare for repeatedly reloading looking for arrival into Memphis. Thank you for flying FedEx, FlightAware, and MacRumors. We hope your MBP enjoys its stay in Memphis, or wherever its final destination may be.

Edit: For anyone curious...the track log I linked above now shows the flight being handled by "KMES." This is a display error (ambiguity, really) by FlightAware; "KMES" is actually Memphis TRACON. The <City> Center scans en-route are ARTCCs. (There's a map linked there with which center controls what space.) The ODAPS from the first few listed contacts in the track log are general overwater info... (link explains it better than I can here.)

Please turn off all electronic devices and remember to put your tray-tables up and seatbacks in the full upright position. ;)

Well, my new MBP had better have brought some souvenirs from China given how long it's taking to get here. Some mooncakes or something at least...

I'm starting to think mine will never leave China

What does this in transit mean? I'm in US and dealt with Fed Ex before. I've never seen these vague reports.

psychos, I know you're still up waiting to see your shipping status get update ~11:21PM CDT when FDX90 lands in Memphis. :) I'm gonna stay up too since I believe my MBP is on that flight.

Indeed. :) Hoping it makes it onto FDX1473 MEM-BOS or FDX1406 MEM-BOS. It could even get on FDX1454 MEM-PVD and be driven the 60 miles up to here. (My local distribution facility is about a 10 minute drive from BOS, though.)

First off I want to thank you for one of the best posts EVER on Macrumors forum. I've been on this forum for a couple years and this post is certainly among the best I've ever seen. I'm posting some info here not to pick nits but to provide more info from my particular order which may indeed be an edge case.

You're welcome! I've been more than happy to do it, the combination of being anxious to get my new MBP, being an air travel geek, and having some free time the past few days made it fun. :) Please nitpick as much as you want! I'm more than happy to be have anything helpful pointed out, or anywhere that I'm just plain wrong.

Below is my tracking info. Note that I ordered Thursday, Apr 15, 2010 at 12:59 PM CDT. My package went wheels up the same day it was picked up and only 13 hours after pickup.

As my shipping shows the second "in transit" can happen the same day of the "Left FedEx Origin Facility" scan.

Hmm, indeed. I'll update my mini-FAQ.

Also, it seems that many folks are getting their packages early. Maybe folks with expedited shipping are the ones getting it early? In any case my scheduled delivery is Wednesday, April 21 but with the flight arriving in Memphis in less than 1 hour I'm hoping my MBP gets to me tomorrow since I live in a suburb of Dallas, a major city. My wife actually brought up a good point with respect to people getting their shipments early - with the delays caused by the volcano in Europe it's almost certain that traffic into the Memphis super-hub is considerably lessened as there's no Europe-Memphis flights landing.

Yeah, it seems that folks getting them early are more likely to have ordered with expedited shipping... Good point about the lack of European activity and freed-up staff in Memphis. That creates more capacity within the entire system.

Well, back to watching FDX90! (Keep in mind FlightAware is generally 5 minutes delayed, so you'll see it suddenly "Arrived 5 minutes ago!" about 5 minutes after it arrives.)

Dude you are awesome. I hope that this is the case. This will be my first mac and I am loving Apple and this community already!

MEMPHIS, TN

FlightAware was a little slow here; it's finally showing the flight as having arrived at 11:26PM, although the track log has data up to 11:31PM...so I'm guessing it touched down right around then since it was at 600ft at 11:31. :) Seems the plane was delayed a bit as it ended up circling around for an approach from the south onto one of 36L/36C/36R.

WooHoo. My tracking info still shows "in transit" from Shanghai but I'll give it a few minutes and see if it updates.

* edit * And 7 minutes later my tracking status updated to "Apr 19, 2010 11:41 PM
Arrived at FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN" also!!!

Here's hoping it makes it onto FDX1471.
