It seems I'm the only one who thinks putting something that scratches on top of something that shouldn't scratch is the biggest fail ever.....

I am sure others are concerned, but unless they see it happening they do not even think of it. I have only had my watch about 4 days and worrying about the coating is not on my top of the list. I did pay the $70 for AC+ and would use it if the watch became hard to read or unsightly.

So far I am quite happy in what a difference the watch has made at my first day back to work. Pleasantly surprised.

They whole purpose of this oleophobic coating is to stop it from finger printing and is not for stopping scratches. I have not noticed any finger prints on my watch face to speak of yet when I tried to use my nose it did leave an oil spot:rolleyes:

I seriously don't get what you people do with these screens. I've owned too many iOS devices to count and have even more for testing at work and still haven't seen this oleophobic scratching. Or maybe you guys are even more anal than I am, which I doubt, but I'm open to the possibility. I've seen some regular scratches and even cracks in my coworker's stuff but not this kind of scratch. I appreciated it when they added this (I think it was on the 3GS) because the screen had a little bit less friction when swiping and smudges were much easier to wipe off. However maybe Apple should invest in creating some hardened coatings for these newer materials. Not sure if that's possible given the nature of the materials involved but the research could be worth it. Would be ideal if they could build it into the material itself so we wouldn't even need a coating.

My coating scratched yet the sapphire screen didn't therefore making the sapphire screen pointless as my screen still had a scratch in it. You may as well just buy the sport model. The SS model is a complete con.

Bad uneducated advice.

Scratched Sapphire Display

I bought the SS Apple Watch w/ Link and it has been great. The body and braclet have a few scratches, which is totally understandable and they can be buffed out, but today the display got in contact with some sandpaper and scratched a massive section of the display. I know multiple tests showed it could withstand sandpaper, but it was scratched pretty bad after just slight contact

Why did you sand it? It's probably the coating. It should go away as it wears off.

All sandpaper is different. Whatever yours touched must have had diamond-hard particles in it.

I don't think he did it intentionally. He said "came into contact with" - maybe he works in an environment with sanding wheels and the such? Easy accident to happen.

There's already threads about scratched screens.. this did not need a new one.

Forum is going to get very boring very quick if people can't open new threads and share new experiences.

Sorry to hear about your screen. Either there was diamond hard particles in the paper as someone said, or fingers crossed it is just the coating and it'll even itself out in time.

Have you tried raising it with Apple?

I've seen people saying they've scratched the coating on their sapphire glass, but there are videos of people rubbing the glass with sandpaper without any damage. Can you scratch it? My previous watch watch had sapphire glass and is as perfect as the day I got it despite the case being bashed up.

Yes, you really can scratch the oleophobic coating, but it's not something you need to worry about too much. It's rare, and some of the people who have done it have been literally trying to prove the watch can't be scratched. Most folks don't have scratches in their coatings (not visible ones, at least).

The reason your other sapphire watch is fine is that most watches don't have this coating, because they're not designed to be touched all the time.

ETA:
Also, the coating will eventually wear off with normal use, which means that your watch will get smudgier over time, but also means that if you do scratch the coating, the scratch will fade over time.

I've somehow managed to scratch my sapphire screen. It's so deep that I can feel it with my fingernail. I'm extremely disappointed to say the least after spending $700 on this watch. I did nothing out of the normal to cause this either. I'm gonna go to the Apple Store to see if they think it's defective cause I've seen what people have done to test the scratch resistance on this thing.

I noticed a couple of marks on my watch screen last night that I can feel with my fingernail. For somebody that really looks after there things this is disappointing. I appreciate sapphire is not scratch proof but for all the scratch testing that has been done on this screen it seems to mark too easily. Taking to the Apple Store tonight to get their opinion.

This was all predicted. Wearables like a watch will suffer the everyday blows of being attached to the human body. If it has not happened, sooner or later it will.

I think theoretically at least that the only thing that can scratch the sapphire screen is another sapphire or diamond rubbing against it. My guess is that maybe you had a thick coating on it and that's why you can catch it with your nail.

Yes you can. Mine scratched incredibly easily and negated the point of a sapphire screen. It was PART of the reason i took it back. I'd rather the watch didn't have the coating so it couldn't be scratched in the first place.

Then why not just wipe it off and be done with it?

This coming Monday will mark week 6 of my SS watch. The casing has many MANY scuffs, most are not noticeable unless you look at them at the right angle under the right light, but the crystal is as flawless as the day I opened the box.

So I know this is probably a result of the coating they put on for fingerprints getting scratched and not actually the sapphire but it pisses me off.... what should i do? CAN I do anything?

Thats not dust in the picture but rather little chips off of the coating i think.....

What is your normal daily activity with the watch on?

Sorry for dumb question, but just haven't seen "chips" like that taken out of the glass. Curious to know what causes it.
