Going from an early 2006 13" 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDram, 320HHD (8 years and still works!)

Wow, I have a 2.4 Ghz core2 duo, that is old enough that I don't remember when I bought it. Is gotta be 6+ years old now. The Apple batteries are dead (one expanded and came apart 2 years ago), and I had the defective 8600 video card die and require a system board replacement, but it still works! Amazing.

I'm perfectly happy just running Linux, but to be honest I have not found a PC laptop worth keeping. The Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro was the absolute coolest with an amazing 3200x1800 screen. As cool as the screen was, it could not display yellow!!!! How on earth does that get past QA. Seriously yellow as brownish green!

I'm in pretty much the exact same situation. I have a 2007 15" 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I've actually had to replace the battery a few times and my current battery holds no charge (it dies once I unplug it). I too had the defenctive video card die on me and had a system board replacement. My camera no longer works and my bezel is cracked at both bottom corners (held together with metal brackets that I cut and glued on with metal glue). But it still works!

I've been waiting for the Haswell upgrade for a while, and just ordered the 15" 2.0/16/512. I think it's pretty safe to say I will be blown away by this upgrade. I can only hope that it will last me as long as my current MBP.

Should I get any maintenence apps? onyx? ccleaner? disk diag? stuff like that to keep my new machine in tip top shape?

To owners of the 13in mid-range model with a 256gb SSD: could someone post a disk speed test? Also, could you check if the SSD a Samsung?

My SSD is a Samsung.
for discbenchs open this image here (it doesn't seem to show up on the forum):

Samsung 512GB

I can confirm. Same SSD and nearly identical performance numbers.

Oddly, in windows 8.1, I get 250/250 mb/s in hdtune. I think it's some power saving feature, as I get the same kind of performance loss in my old mbp with an SSD.

Gaming performance on the 750M is almost identical to the benchmarks I've been seeing from the older model with a 650M. I've run some of the same tests with mine and gotten similar results.

Cnet is pretty dumb, they are comparing the 2.3 Haswell on 10.9 to
2.3 Ivy Bridge on 10.7.4 lol. Their benchmarks in comparing the two are not valid.

Check their system specs

Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display (15-inch, June 2012)
OSX 10.7.4 Lion; 2.3GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM; 8GB DDR3 SDRAM 1,600MHz; 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 650M + 512MB Intel HD 4000; 256GB Apple SS

Yeah...I bet most of the improvement is from better driver support

How is the 4GB working out for you? I'm not sure if I should stick with 4GB or grab some 4 extra. :(

Works great. I don't give a flip about video editing, but works perfect for my web use, document and presentation creating, video watching, network work, etc.

10 hours of battery is great as well.

I changed my battery about 3 weeks ago. I found a site in the UK that was selling genuine Apple ones.

I also did the optibay change. I kept my original 320GB drive in there and then stuck in a cheapo 60GB SSD in the optibay adapter.

The thing that really started to push me over the edge was when even youtube lagged on it. That was the last straw for me. Everything else was starting to run slow too but that was like the straw that broke the camels back.

I got mine all the way back in Feb 2009 so it lasted me almost 5 years. Pretty great, my apple care ran out ages ago :D

That did it for me, too - damned youtube. I could work all day and rarely have performance issues - after watching a random number of YT vid, my dell xps freezes and sometimes the only option is rebooting.

I went all out with what will be my first mac.

To a late 2013 2.8GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM, 512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage

Can't wait for it to arrive!

wow - can u post a pic of the old machine?

My Haswell 15" has a screen beginning with "LSN" and ending in: -A01. Is that a good screen without image retention?

Based on my research, that means that it is a samsung screen.

They're not really necessary, I used to use Onyx for a while but when I saw that it made no difference, I dumped it, if you want to tweak some extra settings, use TinkerTool.

Something like App Cleaner is nice, just dragging the app to the trash can isn't enough, it leaves behind some files, App Cleaner takes care of that.

Just picked up my at apple store, 13" Pro 8gb, 256 flash, with student discount, very happy, so far so good.

I want to point out that I'm a developer, so part of my job is to crash things. But part of me wishes that Apple hadn't rushed Mavericks out the door in time for the rmbp 15" launch. As of right now it's a whack-a-mole of submitting bug reports.

Edit: Really replying to a post a few pages back. The guy asking about encountering any issues. Generally speaking I wouldn't use an OS X release until a .1 update, but since this laptop came with a .0 I didn't really have a choice. I doubt Mountain Lion would even install. I believe it will take until at least 10.9.2 before most of the software bugs (both OS X and third party) are worked out.

My 15" MBP should be here Tue. I'm so glad I waited past the first gen of Retina! I got the 2.6GHz with 1Tb SSD, spending way too much on a laptop, but let's face it, this is the best damn laptop out there by a mile.

Just dropping in to say I'm happy to be joining the 15" ranks. My local store has had the top-end in stock since launch - but I save over $100 in tax having it shipped to my house :-/ Should be here Monday by 10:30am, and I can't wait.

I'll be upgrading from a base 2012 13" rMBP. I feel like the 15, while expensive, is a truly no-compromise laptop; and I can't wait to play with it.

New 15" rMBP owner coming from a 2011 15" MBP and 2010 hex core MP. I am consolidating my photography work and Logic X onto the rMBP and just using the MP as a slave for sample playback and to rip blu-rays and run Handbrake.

Keeping stuff in sync on the laptop and MP was a pain, and this new rMBP is faster than the MP except for sw that leans on all 6 cores of the MP.

Using a Belkin TB dock with my ACD. Still deciding on what TB RAID solution I will be using for stuff that doesn't fit on the SSD.

I'm in the same boat, I'm thinking of going to Mid-Base. :)

have you decided yet?

I want to get a refurbished retina model that comes with 8GB ram for only $1160, but I'm not sure. I could spend $1,400 to get the midrange, but I'm trying not to :(

Unfortunately it is unchanged. I own both the 2013 MacBook Pro and Air. The webcam on the Air is significantly better!

Thanks for the reply,

That really sucks, as the Apple Store website says it is improved:

"Make your point with greater clarity. Centered just above the widescreen Retina display on MacBook Pro is an even better FaceTime HD camera. It features a new image sensor with increased low-light sensitivity. Which means colors are more accurate and image noise is significantly lower. The FaceTime HD camera also has a new image processor for sharper images and reduced motion blur. And a new face detection feature makes sure you always look your best because it automatically adjusts exposure and white balance to complement your face and skin tone — no matter what lighting is behind you."

Did you ever have problems with your retina model? I want to buy it the previous generation model. how is the battery life on it?

wow, 10 hours of battery life? that is crazy! I think I'm going to get the base model and see if it's enough for my basic college needs.

I'm wondering if I should have gotten 1TB instead of 512GB for my 13". I don't know if I can justify the price difference though.

Hi!

Yep, I'm actually planning on putting it up for sale here in the Marketplace sometime this week so long as the 15" turns out to be what I want.

No issues at all. Bought it as a refurb in February, so it has a few months of AC left. Mint condition. Never gave me any issues. Just the integrated graphics struggle a tad on very graphic heavy sites and I'm pretty particular about that; plus I knew I always wanted a bigger screen and a dGPU in the end.

I'll probably be putting the computer up for $900 + fees & shipping. Shoot me a PM if you're interested. :)

Don't think mavericks was rushed. They released the gold master two weeks ago meaning they had plenty of time to spare
