My only complaint is the side vent, but I also understand why it’s there. Admittedly, I’ve only played with these in store but they didn’t feel any cheaper to me than my current 2016 machine.

Some things have odd designs, take the US Military Humvee, it's not pretty by any means but it will get our troops out of almost anything imaginable.
LOL You probably never read anything about horrible those Humvees are in real life....not the best analogy.

Except that a big part of the appeal of Apple products is that they're (usually) exceptionally well designed to look good in your home/office.

What in the actual eff are you talking about? The design is amazing and this thing feels ultra premium, honestly don’t know what you were expecting.

I can tell you right now that my late 2013 15" was thicker than my 2021 16" so not sure what you are talking about. I stacked them right next to each other to compare when I got the new one. I also think the new one looks a bit more premium compared to the old one. The design on this new one seems more refined and deliberate in comparison, though that's personal taste.

I understand you don't like the new design. But this was not designed to be liked but to be and ultra efficient case for the new M1 Pro and Max SOCs:

- Squared of body has more internal volume for better cooling, bigger batteries and better speakers
- More internal volume means the case can sound a bit hollow
- Feet are harder plastic as the old feet used to wear and even slowly rot away

So you might not like it but it is all done for the sake of efficiency and longevity. Now if the design is still a problem for you, even knowing it is a big improvement, then by all means get an older, thermally compromised, space heater macbook pro. Good luck!
Urg. Such is life :)

By the way, if you'd like the thin design and feel cold in the winter you can always go back to Intel..

Oh the problems with my 2013 mbp... whenever I hooked up an external monitor the system would heat up, fans go, and lag. I finally figured out to plug in the monitor HDMI instead of lightning. No more issues

I think the new design is OK. But the previous 13-inch design is beautiful.

I picked up the 14" this week and it's sitting on a desk next to my 2018 13-inch - soon to be traded in. And I find myself continually drawn to the 13-inch device. I love how it looks, how it feels when you pick it up and how much sleeker it feels.

On paper these devices are the same thickness, but in practice the 13" feels so much thinner because of its design.

If Apple releases an 'M2' 13-inch MBP with the same chassis, larger/improved screen, I think I'd probably trade in my 14-inch in for it.

I just got rid of my 2012 MBP retina, but I like the fact the new 2021 MBP doesn't get hot at all, and that it has a zero fan mode when the thermals don't necessitate even having fans going.

So comparably even if you don't care for this thick design with smooth edges instead of the 2013's sharp ones, there are a lot more things to consider than looks, particularity how it operates as a laptop computer. You eyes would have fared a lot better looking at a 14" promotion screen you know. ;)

I saw the new M1 MacBook Pros - "16" and 14" tonight. The body is squared off and thicker than my 2013 MBP. WHAT??? And it feels cheap, not like the former Airplane Grade aluminum. You knock on it and it feels hollow-ish. And the bottom feet are harder than previous models, almost like a cell phone case that is hard plastic and sort of hits the desk too hard. I am pretty disappointed. Why, Apple, Why? I waited years to upgrade. Almost tempted to get a deal on an older one now.

I was a little worried when I saw the product photos after the announcement because it looked double or triple the volume of its predecessors but that was of course an optical illusion. But I like the look. It feels like a work truck in an appealing kind of way.

Having seen it in person now, it absolutely DOES NOT feel or look cheap. It’s a solid device with top class materials and immaculate fit and finish. It doesn’t bend or creak in any way. This does not feel cheap and nobody looking at it would ever mistake it for such.

My 14" looks beautiful and solid. My previous 13" (2020 M1) did as well. Both nice, but I now prefer the current design.

I love the HDR/promotion screen... I'm fine with the shape, but really don't like the scrape-y feeling of the vents.

I'll wait a while - maybe after they hit the refurb store, or an M2 based laptop comes out. I can't really justify upgrading from my nicely equipped M1 Air.

Don't like it? Don't buy it.

In my opinion, the new design is light years ahead of the 16-21 MBP chassis in terms of functionality. As others have mentioned, the old almost always wobbled right out of the box, and even if "stable" wobbled on some surfaces because of the feet.

Sure, I'll agree that the new MBPs have a bit more of a brutalist and utilitarian style, but I personally like that. At the end of a day its a tool. Just like the design of a dumbbell doesn't really matter, all that matters is that you can hold it and it weighs as much as it says it weighs.

How's notch, easy to get used to? Only thing that stops me from buying.
I think just about everyone says they don’t notice it after a little while. I got use to it after 3 or 4 hours and it doesn’t bother me at all now. I suppose someone will pop in saying they hate it Since I posted this.

The only thing I dislike about the new design is the etched MacBook Pro on the bottom. I would’ve preferred a more subtle engraved word toward the top or something. As it is now it looks kinda like a cheap Dell laptop, in my opinion.
