This folded shape is excellent in terms of the resulted internal display aspect ratio when unfolded. Reviewers will often criticise book-style (not tri-fold) foldables in terms of their movie watching experience when unfolded, small movie lost in the middle of a square display with silly giant letterboxing.

Should Apple proceed with this aspect ratio, the unfolded movie watching experience will be tops for a relatively stout and small foldable. Apple should however release a big brother to this model alongside its release, eschewing their typical plodding released pace for new products.

Apple Fold (4:3)
Apple Fold Ultra (big, fast, pro cameras, 4:3)

The tri-folds are cool, but I would have concerns for their longterm durability for a device the price of a mid-tier MBP.

I guess I just don't understand the target demographic for this form of smartphone? People who want to consume long form content (movies) on their phones? This still seems too small for that imo. I guess if you're a serious mobile gamers, then it may make sense (that world is unknown to me), but I don't think that's a very big demo either?

Fits in my pocket just fine and is very interesting size wise compared to the iPhone Air that I am using.

Edited to add it is also one hand usable for me.

Apple is working on a foldable iPhone that's set to come out in September 2026, and rumors suggest that it will have a display that's around 5.4 inches when closed and 7.6 inches when open. Exact measurements vary based on rumors, but one 3D designer has created a mockup based on what we've heard so far.

On MakerWorld, a user named Subsy has uploaded a 1:1 iPhone Fold replica (via Macworld), which can be 3D printed to give you a rough idea of the size of the upcoming foldable iPhone.

Subsy claims that the model is "based on recently leaked CAD drawings of the iPhone Fold," but there haven't been actual CAD leaks to our knowledge. There were reports of CAD drawings earlier this month, but it turns out those drawings were concept drawings and renders created by MacRumors reader iZac back in May.

iZac designed a mockup with a 5.5-inch display when the device is closed, and 7.76 inches when open. That's in line with the multiple rumors that we've heard, but so far, we don't have exact dimensions.

While you can now print a 3D mockup of iZac's concept, the design isn't based on an actual CAD render. It's likely somewhat similar to what the iPhone Fold will look like in terms of size, but Apple's design for the cameras and the hinge will probably differ quite a bit.

If you have a 3D printer, it's a useful way to get something that's close to the size of the iPhone Fold so you can see how it compares to your existing iPhone. We'll likely see more accurate CAD renders and dummy models starting to surface in the first months of 2026.

You forgot the comma in the title.

I know this is polarizing, but it’s exactly what I want in a foldable — exactly.

I had a Samsung Fold7 for a week or so, and returned it. The biggest reason was that I simply didn’t like Android anymore, but the dimensions felt wrong…

I knew two things would sell me on a foldable:
1. Apple’s OS
2. A stubbier folded format

If these rumours are true, I am going to be a happy nerd.

I am really stunned that more people would want this than they'd want the iPhone Air.
Me too. I love my Air. It is my favorite mobile phone ever and I have had a LOT of phones over the years. First one a Mitsubishi DiamondTel MESA 95 (that’s how far back I go). I think part of the problem with the Air is that Apple was afraid of it. Other than the announcement they basically did zero promotion on it.
