Compared to an Android phone like the Nexus Prime, which has a 1.5 Ghz processor, a full 1 Gig of ram (compared to 512 in 4s), a Super AMOLED display with only 6 dpi less than iPhone, LTE/HSPA+, and a 2050mAh battery.... It might be a little behind.

Of course you have to factor in the crappy android OS, which makes the iPhone the best by default. But if you go strictly by hardware....

Now you see why you shouldn't be a stat whore - besides the fact that we don't yet know how much RAM the iPhone 4S has, it's not a matter of whether it matches the competition, but what you can do with it. I don't care if it matches spec for spec, as long as I thoroughly enjoy the experience and can do everything I want.

Now, back to the point of the thread - it is truly amazing that we have so much power in our pockets, even if it is a bit less than the competition. It would be the same as carrying a complete computer room from the 70's - in our pocket

It really gets to me when you compare the iPhone 4 to my old PowerBook. Here we have an 8 year old laptop, with pretty much the same spec as my iPhone, except it has about 5gigs more space. Amazing.

Hey HawaiiMacAddict, do you live on Oahu? I'm movin out there at the end of this month! Haven't met as many tech-oriented people there as in Northern Virginia, haha.

Still don't have my flying car. Thought we supposed to have them by the year 2000. :p

Since the title of the thread is a question...

You could have just said NO.

Everything is amazing and no one is happy.

"Can you give it a second to get back FROM SPACE???"

He's absolutely retarded. Apparently he, you and multiple people on this forum haven't heard of a word called "relativity". He talks about how people b**ched about people having 0s in their phone numbers back when rotary phones were top notch crap. Now we have data plans on our iPhones to complain about. No difference. The technology is better, obviously, but that doesn't mean that we're any worse than his generation. Generation prior to his would call them spoiled idiots too for complaining about their rotary phones. Go further back and you'll find people who complained about telegrams, pony express, TRAINS, and so on. Where's his logic? It doesn't exist.

He's a comedian, it's meant to be funny. His point is that people shouldn't bitch now because things are great, and he's right.

Right, but in a thread with this kind of topic, I think all of us can do better than walking in and using the same tired Google and Apple talking points. Basically, you directly took the attitude that we're criticizing, especially with that great Louis CK video. You said, my airline only made me wait 30 minutes on the runway (vs your airline which took 40 minutes) before we flew, in the sky.

I mean, I'm really saying, it's all incredible, iOS, Android, WP7, etc. There's no point in discussing minute spec differences in here, and no point in playing devil's advocate except to just be oppositional.

If you showed either the Nexus Prime or the iPhone 4S to someone in WWII, they'd likely think both devices were made by aliens.

What a world we live in where 1.0 GHz versus 1.5 GHz in our pocket is really considered a huge difference :D

You know I actually agreed with your original post. If apple would have made the exact same upgrades, but slapped aluminum backing on it and called it the iPhone 5, there'd be uproar about the amazing new phone. But because of the same form factor, people dismissed it. Personally I'd like a slightly bigger phone. Up to 4" max. But that doesn't take away the strides the iPhone 4S has made since the 4.

My dad has held every touch and iPhone in his hand and pondered what he could have done with such a device.....

See, he was all excited when they gave him access to the upper 4k to use for his telemetry stuff back when he was launching rockets in the 70s. 4k and a handful of instructions.

I don't expect the next 100 years to be as exciting and innovative as the last 100 have been. From here on out we are refining and perfecting concepts we have now. Maybe I'm wrong, I hope I am for the sake of my kids and future grandkids.

Anyway, at 42, yes, I've been brought up to appreciate the power of the pocket computer :D

He's a comedian, it's meant to be funny. His point is that people shouldn't bitch now because things are great, and he's right.

Things are a lot funnier when they're true. Reference: George Carlin.

Greatness is relative to the time, as I had stated. iPhones, Droids, 360s & Lambos are hot now. 15 years ago Walkmans were awesome. Electricity was once marveled at, now it's taken for granted by nearly every 1st world resident....even his generation.

The things he said are true.

My point (and his) is that this is currently the pinnacle of human existence and all anyone does is complain, especially in the first world where they have it better than the rest. Back in his generation, I'm sure people felt the same, but you'd think that by comparing life to the past we would see that we have things so easy now.

It's just a pointless...point. My point is that his point is invalid because most generations can look back and see how much better things are. Nigh every generation is the pinnacle of our existence. The WW2 crowd was called the Greatest Generation for a reason (several). We're gonna complain no matter how good life gets. If our phones could make us dinner and wipe our asses when it came out the other end, we'd still have something to complain about. Like why the hell won't it ever make the damn Filet Mignon perfectly medium? And why does it refuse to use Charmin Ultra?

Oh and I'm helping myself by not helping myself. I'm obviously complaining about something that doesn't need to be complained about simply because I can complain about it. Only difference between me and someone who would do the same 20+ years ago is that I can do it through a medium that was unavailable to them at the time.

And that's exactly what he's pointing out. He's saying people shouldn't complain.

Look at the OP's last paragraph. He said people shouldn't be calling it mediocre. I was commenting on why some may see it as that. Not saying I disagree, but merely presenting a differing viewpoint.

But again I don't think it goes for the iPhone alone. Its more that people say a phone with such a processor is mediocre when many years ago it would have been a dream to have such a powerful device - iPhone or other - in your pocket. Its just crazy how the standards have moved.

That we're all going to be walking around with 1 GHz dual core computers in our pockets, like it's no big deal?

Pretty insane. As weird as it sounds I still get amazed by first world stuff like:

- Always clean running water
- Electricity whenever we are
- Paved roads
- Life saving surgeries
- Gasoline to drive anywhere
- Planes that fly all over the world
- Satellite imaging

The list goes on and on...

We are truly blessed the time we live in :)

I like CK and this bit too but I have to also say that people bitching is also one factor in getting things to advance. I don't do that myself, at least not that often.

Now back the to main topic and I totally agree. I especially find amazing the fact that you can reach anyone in the world if you knew their cell phone number.

I agree. I can't believe we have sewage, water and gas pipes running underground in an enormous network that reaches millions of homes. The logistics of it are just mind blowing, and I actually find the more simple stuff like that way more impressive than computer technology (which, of course, is insane in itself).

Exactly, because a lot of people expect too much these days, we're all too spoiled.

I agree, we always want to be astounded at things we didn't know exist at apple events, when really, even incremental upgrades show us how fast technology is advancing and we should all be happy :)

Agreed with this post.

Alot of people are taking for GRANTED on this technology we all have now. And it doesn't matter what OS. Only fanboys care to debate about that stuff. For awhile, I assumed Android was crappy. This was based solely with 10 minute demos at the store or watching YouTube reviews. After finally owning one and keeping my expectations realistic, Android really isn't all that "crappy." At least certain models anyway. Can't pigeonhole all of them to be the same way. It would be like stereotyping a certain ethnicity.

Every one of these smartphones from the last couple years can be great and small computers in our pocket that can so many some amazing things. Let's not take them for granted because a certain OS is "smoother" than that one or if a certain phone's has better specs than another one. Really think of what they are all capable of doing and what they offer to people's varying needs, and it is truly amazing.

This isn't an ode to Apple, Google, Microsoft, Nokia, RIM, Samsung, HTC, LG, SE, or whoever. This is an ode to all of cell phone technology.

See my secondary posting. I wasn't disagreeing with you. Just presenting the other side of the debate. No disrespect was directed towards you. Not sure why you felt the need to disrespect me.

See, the point was, there wasn't a debate. The whole thread boiled down to a single sentence:

Technology today is fecking amazing.

Whats even more amazing is that we as consumers are comfortable paying what is equal to annual incomes of many in this world and sacrifice the youth of a small child in China to have this and many other toys.

Strange, sad and reality.

<snort> Way to be a buzzkill.

Seriously, many, many people do give back in countless ways. I run a charitable organization in my "spare" time. Should I hate myself because I have a fantastic cell phone (that incidentally helps me to run that organization)?

Hell no. I worked hard for what I have. And I'm loving it.

I can't believe it, it's amazing.

Only a couple years ago I was still using a 1.2Ghz single core PC with 256MB RAM, and 60GB HD. It's crazy to think that we get more than that in our pockets now. Of course, now I have a MacBook with 2.4Ghz dual-core/8GB RAM (originally 2GB)/250GB from 2008.

That's 3 years old though...today we have better processors that are quad-core and I'm thinking that it won't be long before we have that computing power in our pocket. Still a couple years to go! Perhaps in the iPhone 6 or 7 :p
