EDIT. Hmm yes, that is exactly what they mean!

Well.....I tried that, obviously, but to me it is NOT a workaround it does not look anywhere near as good as when DV is properly triggered, like it is on the Nvidia Shield for example. I am not convinced by this “workaround”

”The way iPhone 12 Dolby Vision video works with an Apple TV is wonky, though: you have to run the Apple TV in Dolby Vision mode all the time to make it work. If you are a sane person and use your Apple TV in SDR with “match content” turned on, you will still always see SDR video from an iPhone 12. I hope Apple fixes this very quickly.)”

What do they mean tweak it? If it’s what I think they mean, they mean setting DV to basically always on before you airplay? I’ll have a look and see what they are saying.

yeah have a look, it was during the review by Mr Patel. He said something about having to toggle DV on. To be honest I wasn’t paying much attention at the time but I was keen as I have a C9 and looking to get the 12 pro Max.

Yeah just read it, definitely not a workaround I think they've got it wrong. What they are seeing is a "faux" DV picture IMO. It looks totally different to viewing it with DV properly triggering.

I just shot a video this morning with my 12 pro, and it says "HDR" when I play it on the phone. I then airdropped it to my macbook (it "converted" first, something i havent seen before), put it on a memory stick and played it on my LG E8. No DV nor HDR. :(

Did you AirPlay to the tv itself or to an Apple TV? I have a C8 myself. I don't think I knew you even could directly AirPlay to the TV itself. But then again I've had an Apple TV as long as I've had my C8 so I never needed to AirPlay to the TV.
So here is what I think is happening with this whole debacle. I have my APTV4K set to DV all the time on my C8. When I watch movies or content in DV I dont get the DV flag pop up because the TV is already constantly in DV mode ( have no idea how that is set ). So when I Air Play my new vids from iPhone 12 Pro to my TV I just have to assume they are playing in DV because they look pretty good. Apple and Dolby have come up with a clever way to up scale whatever is on my TV while ATV4K is turned on to show everything in DV...even when I watch ATT Directv app and go to my settings when clearly watching SDR the TV picture setting is still in DV. So apple never sends the change to the TV to get out of DV. I hope they clarify this because it seems to me with this trick they do by upscaling everything people will just think their vids from their iPhone is in DV mode since the TV never switches back n forth...or at least on my set.

I don't think this is correct. My C9 TV always shows HDR / DV icon when playing this type of content

You are correct. Damn im screwing this whole thing up. All my movies from Netflix to stuff ive bought all have DV logo on top when being played. When I am normally in just Apply TV home screen the TV is also all the time in DV mode. When Air Playing vids to ATV4K from IP12 i dont get DV banner when I hit play but the mode is still in DV. I went into the menu and switched it to sdr and hdr and still when I play the vids from my iphone I dont get the DV banner on top. Either Apple lied and it isnt as advertised OR they will just say since you are airplaying vids while it is already in DV mode it does not need to switch or show you that it switches. That is the only thing I can think of. Or they need to do an update? But why would they need to update something that was suppose to be available at launch? F'in Apple man!

Going to see if I can help you. I’m kind of a Home Theater buff so I’ve spend a lot of time with this stuff.
First off on your Apple TV I highly recommend you turn OFF Dolby Vision. I suggest you set it to 4K SDR for your video output. Otherwise your Apple TV MENUS are always Unnecessarily driving your TV in HDR/DV for no good reason. (When does put stress on the TV.)

Then what you want to do is Go to Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content and make sure range and Frame rate is set to ON
Now, whenever you watch content that is in Dolby Vision or just HDR, the Apple TV will trigger and switch to those modes only when it needs to.

Having the Apple TV always in Dolby Vision is honestly a bad idea. It tries to output everything in Dolby Vision and if content isn’t designed for it, it’s just not gonna turn out well.

Also regarding the main issue we are having about playing DV videos to our Apple TV’s, it seems pretty clear the Apple TV just needs an update.
The website for the iPhone 12 says very clearly we should be able to AirPlay Dolby Vision Video to the Apple TV.

But even without a Apple TV the video doesn't play

I have video content which I can play natively on my LG TV and HDR is enabled

If play the content made from the iPhone 12 Pro which is recorded in DV/HDR it doesn't work

What ever player I use it doesn't work

The native player of LG, Plex, VLC or even Airplay nothing works which is very odd

LG Oled C7P (2017) here and it does not trigger HDR or DV by airplaying to ATV4K latest version. Sad to see this but it looks gorgeous on my iPhone 12 Pro screen when playing back.

Downloaded a video sample made with iPhone 12 and my LG B8 plays it as HLG HDR and it looks good. Hopefully AppleTV 4K gets an update so it can play Dolby Vision natively via the Photos app. As far as I know Airplay involves re-encoding.

Thank you for the info. I will switch it back to SDR. Do you think Apple can even send DV info via Air Play? When they announced it I was in shock that kind of mbps and or data can be transfered or streamed via a iphone to a Apple Tv box in decent compression and quality.

Yeah it’s definitely Possible. iOS 14 alone is allowing 4K AirPlay for the first time and the jump from 1080 to 4K AirPlay is definitely bigger than just some Dolby Vision Metadata.

I’m sure they will fix it in an update. I hope so anyway!

I hope so. But usually when Apple announced something that is not available at launch they always add the will be availabile via update xxx.

i saw that same quote and wondered if the ATV is in the mode where everything is output in DV how could you know it’s actually playing the DV version of the video and not SDR output in DV?

I find it weird that this is not a bigger deal around the internet. One of the biggest features of iPhone 12 does not work on any TV or any platform for that matter. Im kinda bummed it didn't just work like magic......when Apple unveiled the whole Dolby Vision worlds first I was a little pessimistic given that a phone can create and share Dolby Vision content that easily on the fly. I know its built on the HLG tech to make it easier but saying at the Key note that you can easily view the videos via Air Play on Apple Tv was totally wrong since no one on earth can verify that this works on any TV as Apple described it would.
