for whoever brought up local models...

These are just download sizes. For best performance they need to fit in all of your unified RAM or dedicated VRAM. These are considered the bleeding edge local AI models right now.

gpt-oss:120b = 65GB
qwen3:235b = 142GB
llama3.1:405b = 243GB
deepseek-r1:671b = 404GB
deepseek-v3.1:671b = 404GB

Download size doesn't mean that's how much it'll take up in memory. Could be more.

  • iPhones have 8-16GB memory. Won't run any of them.
  • MacBook Pros come with 16-128GB RAM. Would only manage the OpenAI model.
  • Mac Studio is 36-512GB RAM. The Apple product capable of running all of them but that would cost £9,700 and with a 1TB ssd you'd only have ~400-500GB free space. That's just to run ONE model.
and yes before someone thinks they're smart...there are quantized models. I'm just using this as an example that AI loves RAM and how challenging it is to run locally. The more you cut down a model the more it affects performance.

Forstall introduced Siri in 2011.
As with most Apple products, Siri was a small company that the corporation bought and then forgot about.
This is quite normal for Apple.

Step 1) Buy an innovative company.
Step 2) Promote the purchased product as own idea.
Step 3) Forget about the product and stop supporting it.

Perhaps MacRumors could publish an article about how many innovative products Apple has ruined with its "buy and forget" approach.

Maybe, in addition to the money, they are jumping ship because Apple’s privacy restrictions cripples their ability to develop implement a solution at Apple.

Like the google graveyard?

Should we make one for Apple's F ups?

Let's not be silly. I assure you Meta isn't poaching people because they're afraid of some mysterious AI technology at Apple. Apple barely registers as a player in the AI industry--that's why executives are leaving.
I disagree. And how can you assure us of what Meta and Apple are doing ? Do you work for either ? If Apple barely registers why poach their engineers and pay them millions ? Those engineers are leaving Apple for one reason and that is money. Robot Boy is throwing crazy amounts of money at these guys to leave and you would be a fool to turn it down.

I’m guessing Apple thinks AI is a bubble or does not see it as a core aspect of their business. AI has not shown profit yet and it costs an insane amount.

Weird guess considering yesterday's product releases highlighted the improvements in AI more than anything else.

We only seem to hear about high level people vanishing. Does Apple ever get any young people used to modern AI programing? In any case, time to cough up some bucks and buy a company that does good AI (if there are any).

Maybe you should ask yourself what is Apple doing that we don't know about that Meta is willing to paying so much to steal their employees ...

Odd you’d want to poach folks who clearly aren’t up to the task. Plus since when do senior execs matter.

Why are we talking about these people as if they are mindless drones with zero agency or free will? People switch jobs all the time for many reasons, but if someone leaves Apple it must be that they were “poached”?

The last company in the AI business that I plan to use is Meta. Mark can pay these guys whatever he wants, I as a user hate their culture. I would rather see Apple partner with any company than use a Meta product as something for more than sharing a picture to some people.

AI is good for searches and helping to write a document. However, AI will really take off when it has been given personal context. There is no future scenario where I will provide Meta access to any of my personal information. Meta can develop all the gadgets in the world, but I would never use them.

Alright but millions of others will provide their personal information to Meta and use their products. So believe it or not, AI may still take off even without your info and use.

I am sorry to be blunt but Apple should release internal records of these AI employee's failures. Blackball them for having the audacity to not live up to Apple's lofty standards, and jump ship!
Yeah, how dare someone make a career move that made more sense for them personally or professionally. Let’s ‘blackball’ anyone who doesn’t sign a lifetime loyalty contract with Apple while we’re at it. Releasing employees AI failures…everyone makes mistakes in their career, that doesn’t mean they aren’t insanely talented or capable of doing world-class work. What an ignorant take. People leave companies all the time it’s called growth, not betrayal.
