i totally agree with most of this, except the notch is horrible: bad design and should not be on the laptop. I can't believe how thick and heavy these MBPs are and that Apple caved and added back old legacy ports. It's absurd. How many people will use an HDMI port or SD card slot. These new MBPs look like 10 years ago.
I picked up a 16" M1 Mac 32gb, 1 tb yesterday and it blows my old 16", 32, 2tb out the water. The fan hasn't came on and I used it most of the day and night because I couldn't sleep and stayed on the initial charge until this afternoon. It is only 5lbs heavier and I haven't even noticed much of a difference. So speak for yourself, some people use SD cards and it might come in handy to have hdmi even though I use airplay. This is a content creation machine, you don't hear the fan, the display is awesome and Im way more happy with this mbp than my 2019.

What percentage of all MacBook Pro users need and use an HDMI port and/or SD card reader. My guess is a minority, which does not justify a company adding these legacy ports back on. It's called a dongle. I'll take the latest spec USB C over any of this nonsense legacy garbage all day long.

View attachment 1884269Here is the M1 MBA and the new 14-inch, back to back.

Hmmm the MacBook Air must be obese in your opinion.

I come back to the MBP forum every day for a good laugh and I wasn’t disappointed.
Oh my god that new MacBook Pro is disgustingly fat. Jesus. It looks like a MacBook from 10 years ago. The MacBook Air also weighs a full .7 lbs lighter. Not even in the same universe.

Your guess would be wrong.

Fortunately, no one is forcing you to use those ports. The many, many people who rely on them or just find them to be more convenient than a dongle will be happy they're there and you can just pretend they don't exist and use the three USB C port instead.

As for the size, they're barely thicker or heavier than the machines they replace, and that minor increase in size translates to a hell of a lot better performance, which is the entire point of a pro-focused machine.

The 16” is a full half pound heavier! And they are thicker and bigger. That is massive. Yes I am being forced into the ports because they cause the devixe to have to be thicker.

Not one of you knows what percentage of Users will actually use these ports.

Yeah, that's not a lot.

The ports don't cause the device to be thicker. The cooling does. Also, the 13" and 14" are literally the same thickness, while the 16" is 0.02" thicker. Why are you lying about something that's so easy to disprove?

Not one of you knows what percentage of Users will actually use these ports.
And? Neither do you.

Good thing you have both then right?

That's less weight than a bag of Doritos. Actually about 2/3s because you will eat some!

Yes the ports cause the device to have to be thicker. This is without question as USB C ports are thinner and this was already discussed years ago when Apple came out with the USB C MacBooks.

Yes half of 1 lb is a significant difference of course it is. Add half a pound to the MacBook Air or iPad Pro etc. We’re not talking about 1/10th of a lb we’re talking about half of 1 pound. It all adds up in a portable and when you have to carry things.

Do you have an official statement from Apple saying that they removed HDMI because it was too thick? Or is this just more of your speculation?

The difference between the the two machines is the same as a bag of chips. It's less than what a 13 Pro Max weighs. If you think that's heavy, I'm really curious about how you managed back before the 2016 models came out. Did you just not have a laptop?

I have not read every thread on the subject, but one market that will make extensive use of both the SD slot and the HDMI out, are Youtube creators. While some may use a phone device, and others very high-end pro equipment, there are about 38 million Youtube channels and I expect the vast majority use consumer/prosumer cameras and audio recorders, both of which need SD to get the content into their computer. And many will also appreciate being able to view their content on a large TV monitor which will most likely be easiest with HDMI. And the vast majority of these folks will care little to none if their new machine is a half-pound heavier or back to 2010 design as long as it helps them get their channel out to their viewers.

On the contrary, they know exactly what they're doing.
How do they know exactly what they're doing. You call having application menus hiding behind a screen notch knowing what you're doing (this includes Finder behaviour that's been noted as being an issue). You call having no centre stage or Face ID on a $3000 laptop when some of it is on a $500 iPad Mini knowing what you're doing. You call making something half of a pound heavier with legacy ports knowing what you're doing. What happened to all of the power per watt and efficiency of Apple's new chips. If you listen to their marketing it's almost as if they imply you don't even need fans, yet their laptops are beasts.

What evidence do you have that Youtube creators will use the SD card slot on the MacBook Pros.

That's cool. Don't buy it. There are still "older versions" out there. Best Buy, Sweetwater, B&H still have some. Be careful though, you might burn your lap...

Always enjoy these type of posts with my cup of coffee in the morning. It's up there with people posting about creating a class action lawsuit for Apple's jelly scrolling on the new iPad mini 6.

Funny you mentioned this, that very same poster is now going mini 6 exclusively. Revealing, isn’t it?

Yes...to all of that.

How about "they shoot video with cameras that use SD cards for storage."
Zero evidence dude. There are dongles for USB C and SD cards.

USB C: audio, video, and charging all in one. Super thin ports. Apple goes backwards with an SD card slot and HDMI port.

Instead of Apple leading, they go backwards. The latest USB C data transfer speeds beats the breaks off of SD card data transfer speeds. And there are cameras that have USB C data transfer ports that can be used directly to a computer's USB C port, thereby negating the need for expensive, clumsy, and absurd SD cards. The camera industry needs to cater to the needs of these content creators and technology innovation, not technology companies like Apple going backwards in time.

This is all so boring and dumb.

The hilarious thing amount your posts is that every one of your arguments is backed by nothing other than your assumptions. You have no idea what anyone else wants in a computer, it’s all just “ports bad, cooling bad, laptop bad”.

I can understand if it doesn’t fit your needs, but the idea that you speak for the majority of users and know better than Apple what their pro customers (who they’ve work with directly) want is laughable.
