You don't want a MBP, you want a 16" Macbook Air. Ask for that, don't ask Apple to completely destroy the tool I need to do my work. The 2016-2019 15" MBP was the absolute WORST laptop Apple has made since the white plastic Macbook in the mid 2000's. I'm sure it was great for non-creatives like you who just type documents and read on it, but it completely failed for those of us who bought these based on the advertised performance and specs. The thicker, heavier updates are a welcome change because we actually, for the first time in almost 9 years, get a thermally capable powerful laptop.
You don't want a laptop, you want a tank. For a non-creative like you who doesn't do much creative work at all and just posts on the Internet and types some documents at home with basically no travel, why don't you just buy an expensive gaming Windows laptop.

The rest of use creatives: we'll keep holding Apple to a higher standard. This is 2021, a full 20 years after the first Apple PowerBook TiBook. That laptop was Apple's first real thin bezelled laptop that was groundbreaking. It had a widescreen 15.2" screen and small bezels, was made out of titanium, and housed a G4 chip that for the time was quite powerful. It weighed 5.3 lbs, which is 0.5 lbs more than the new 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max. The thing is, the new MBP weighs exactly the same amount more (0.5 lbs) as the previous 16" Intel MBP it's replacing.

This isn't progress. This is compromising too much and not innovating at a pace needed. 20 years of R&D and Apple laptops are getting heavier, even with a chip that is supposed to be so much more powerful with better thermals.

For the rest of us creatives, who actually do creative work and travel, having a laptop that you have to lug around that weighs half a pound more is noticeable. Apple should be able to make the 16" thinner and lighter without compromising on performance. They didn't push hard enough, and slapped on legacy ports. Here I sit with this beast on my lap. The difference in weight is noticeable compared to my 16" Intel MBP.

The days of Steve Jobs gracing the stage and pulling a laptop out of an envelope are over: that was well over a decade ago.

These machines are made for professionals - essentially, the kind of people who spent lockdown making The Mandalorian, or were involved in other high-end, high-process professional outputs. These new machines are about function. The width and weight is irrelevant.

Eh, there's more than two opinions in the world about MBPs where pros don't care about the weight and thickness and non pros want a MBA. I'm a pro and I would have preferred something lighter because I want to pack my laptop everywhere I go without even thinking twice about if I want to carry the extra weight.

Does anyone know of any legit stores still selling the last 15" MBP Apple made before the fattening began, in Silver, sealed and with standard Apple warranty? (Failing that, the early intel 16")?

I would keep an eye on eBay. I've seen some proper vendors on there selling certified refurbished units that came with Apple warranty, but don't know of any right now selling 15" ones. One vendor in particular was selling a build of the i7 13" MBP that wasn't available in the Apple Refurbished Store at the time and was selling it for less than Apple was. Sometimes vendors have old stock sitting around.

B&H has also been known to pull up a crate full of old stock out of the blue from time to time for a clearance sale.

I am one of those non-Pros that Apple targets for the aforementioned up-sell strategy. I’ve always been happy to give money to them because I am impulsive and cannot control myself. This time around, I can’t get over the weight, backwardized design, useless ports, and thickness and will stick with what I have. I think Apple made a mistake.
Same here. Went with the 14” since its’s the best compromise but I would kill for an 16” air

Strange post.

You are absolutely not the target market. The fact that you would go for an older Intel model rather than get the sheer performance and power of the new machines just reinforces that fact.
Yes.. this whole post seems strange to the point of wondering if the OP is trolling.
The new 16" laptops are .66" thick. Are we really complaining a professional workhorse computer with a 16" screen being 2/3rds of an inch thick?
Many MBP users did not bother with the silly 2016+ MacBooks with useless Touch Bars and an array of dongles because they got rid of all the ports, and have been holding out for exactly this computer. Im not sure the verification, but I heard multiple reports saying Apple was expecting the highest amount of existing users to upgrade to this model out of any new MBP launch before. That's indicative of the large number of holdouts who you claim are just a very small group of very vocal users/YouTubers that Apple caved to. You are in the minority and you clearly don't realize it.
Speaking of holdouts upgrading.. the 15" version of the 2015 and older machines many were still using before these 2021s came out were .71" thick, .05" thicker than the new MBP that comes with an even larger screen in a slimmer size. So are we really going on about "the fattening" of MacBook Pros because the most controversial designed/worst MacBook pros ever were .05" thinner than the new ones..? 🤔🤦‍♂️

OP has a point though... if you want a large-screen Mac laptop, you have no choice other than to go for a 16" MBP. Similarly, if you want a machine with more than two ports, you have to go for a MBP, or buy a dongle/hub.

Having something like a 16" Air in their lineup won't do much to affect MBP sales but I bet would sell a reasonable amount. With the move to M1 silicon, I'd love to see a proper ultra-light laptop of 12" and a larger Air.

The 16" feels much thicker and fairly heavy compared to my older 2016 15" MBP. I didn't buy one, I was just trying one out at the Apple Store while there for an iPhone issue. It was pretty surprising though.
I wonder how the 14" stacks up size wise compared to the older 15"?

When Apple Silicon opens up a whole new world of possibilities for a 15” thin and light it seems a waste not to pursue that in some form. They had to make too many compromises with the Intel based 15” in 2016, but it was still a fantastically compact and light full size laptop. Now they could probably go even smaller without any of those compromises! I know I’d love to see it, if the 2016 had actually worked as intended it would have been a great machine.

I really don't get what the fuss is about at all, people are acting like it's a massive increase in thickness when that's just not the case.

I upgraded from a Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro to a 2019 16" MacBook Pro, that was a 0.71" thickness device to a 0.61" thickness device, a reduction of 0.10" (2.54mm) in total and in my opinion not particularly noticeable when it came to usage or travelling.

The new 16" MacBook Pro with the M1 Max is exactly in between the two previous MacBook Pros I had, coming in at 0.66 inch, an increase of 0.05" (1.27mm) over the 2019 model but 0.05" thinner than the 2013 model which is a completely negligible amount and barely noticeable unless you're bringing out callipers to measure it.

The only real difference is that it's not tapered so it looks significantly thicker despite that not actually being the case.

It's a little heavier than the Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro I had but I never felt that it was a heavy device at all in the first place.

Same thoughts here. Maybe for people coming from pre-2015 15” MacBooks or 2019+ 16” ones don’t notice as much of a difference, but the 2015-2019 ones definitely are better in terms of design and ergonomics. It may be the last forward-thinking design now that Ive is gone.

Too bad, but maybe they can slim it down again in later generations of the M if they can get it even more efficient and won’t need as much space for thermals/batteries. Not holding my breath though..

Don't get me wrong, I'd jump back on an M2 MacBook Air 15" the second it is announced. I have an M1 iMac and I love it. But weight and thickness matter to me and they have indeed been going up:

15" MacBook Pro:
  • Height: 0.61 inch (1.55 cm)
  • Width: 13.75 inches (34.93 cm)
  • Depth: 9.48 inches (24.07 cm)
  • Weight: 4.02 pounds (1.83 kg)
16" MacBook Pro 2019:
  • Height: 0.64 inch (1.62 cm)
  • Width: 14.09 inches (35.79 cm)
  • Depth: 9.68 inches (24.59 cm)
  • Weight: 4.3 pounds (2.0 kg)
16" MacBook Por 2021:

  • Height: 0.66 inch (1.68 cm)
  • Width: 14.01 inches (35.57 cm)
  • Depth: 9.77 inches (24.81 cm)
  • Weight: 4.7 pounds (2.1 kg)
They have changed by 1 mm thickness 6mm width 8mm depth and 270g the biggest change here is weight that’s about the same as a small kids juice pack 250ml.
And gained .8 of an inch diagonal screen real estate and double the battery life against the 15 inch model to be honest this seems like a very good trade off from apple to be honest.
Do remember the intel machines just looked smaller because of the chamfered sides. The 14 inch is actually thinner than the thick part of the 13 inch pro for example.

16” Air would be a top seller. Hopefully fan boys will exercise some self-control and not spend $2,500 + for the MBP 16, and Apple will see this.

I know this seems like first world problems but I could carry my 2016 15” mb pro around with one hand and no way I could do that with the new 16

I can attest. It is a behemoth. Certainly a trade-off for the larger/more immersive screen and excellent battery life. I think I’ll wait until the end of 2022 to make my upgrade. We should have or know by then the specs of a larger Air, and who knows, maybe by then we’ll get upgrades like Face ID to the 14/16 MBP.

Could you do it with the old 16”? It’s not like this is Apples first 16” laptop and the new one is only slightly heavier than the old one with the old design.

Short story:

Does anyone know of any legit stores still selling the last 15" MBP Apple made before the fattening began, in Silver, sealed and with standard Apple warranty? (Failing that, the early intel 16")?

Long story:

I hate what Apple has done to the new MBPs. The only thing I like about them is the notch and slim bezels, everything else seems like caving to the demands of a very small group of very vocal users/YouTubers who wanted the laptop to be so chunky it couldn't leave home, wanted old legacy ports, and had an irrational hate of the Touch Bar that would have puzzled the best psychotherapists. They got what they wanted, good for them! I doubt Apple will sell many of these thick boys, but at least now the have managed to shut the YouTube crowd up, or better yet, to make them purr. Good for all.

But many of us who used to buy Apple's largest laptop did not care a bit about performance and even less so about SD cards. What we wanted was a large screen laptop by Apple, that's all. If a 16" MacBook Air existed, we would buy it by the dozen. Apple's old strategy was to upsell us to the Pro machines, which was fine because they were still relatively slim and portable. Now that strategy has gone. Perhaps Apple will eventually humor us, and release a 15-16" MacBook non-Pro with reasonable weight (I don't even care what they do with ports and Touch Bar, as long as the thing is somewhat portable). Until then, I would love to scoop up the last slimline 15" MBP made, or, failing that, the 16" before it became obese.
Then buy a MacBook Air. The Pro is not for you.

There will not be a 16” Air. It will be 14”. The Air is a product that is supposed to be Apple’s most portable laptop. It was 13.3” like the 13.3” MBP. It will go to 14” like the 14” MBP. It will have a notch and should be thin. But don’t expect Samsung Bezel Blade thin: Apple no longer as the ability to pull something like that off. Steve Jobs is long gone…

I know this seems like first world problems but I could carry my 2016 15” mb pro around with one hand and no way I could do that with the new 16
The difference is less than 7/8 tenths of a pound (depending on pro/max).. i upgraded from a 13” and have been carrying the new 16 all over with one hand no problem? Sure it’s bigger, but that screen 😍. And I’ve only charged it once in the past week.

ok admittedly it looks bigger of course because of the square design that lets apple cramp better thermals and battery and cooling. But having a 16in, 13m1 air, its not stupid thick. Its an illusions really since the rubber feet are taller and combined with the square body makes it look bigger than it actually is.

It simply feels like the computer has been changed to suit the vocal whiners.
I think you mean "professionals who need performance".

Personally i'm going to be all over a 14" once the crypto market settles down after this current climb and i cash some out. Currently on an MBA because at the time, apple had nothing with decent performance in this form factor so may as well go smallest...

Why don’t you wait for next year on the rumoured 16” MBA that Apple is working on rather than going nuts on a laptop you don’t like?
Don't hold your breath on an imaginary product Apple has never done any work on.
