Have you got your watch yet? There's no way in hell you're getting even a piece of paper in that gap. Compressed air on a waterproof seal?

----------

Apologies, correction. A piece of thin paper will sort of get in there.

Nope, don't have it yet. And thanks for the paper test :)

From the patent diagram, I'm kind of wondering if the crown itself is simply press-fitted on the shaft. (Not glued or anything like that.)

If it can be pulled off, then yeah I'd be real tempted to make a tiny little felt circle and hide it between the crown and the case, and press the crown mostly back on again.

Otherwise, I'd be worried at say, the beach. Might get a tiny grain of sand stuck back there, that water alone could not get out.

Well add me to the list of sticky crowns. I called Apple without hesitation they offered to replace it so my replacement is on the way. Should be here in the next few days. He said the replacement are coming from here in the US.

Everything about the watch is surprising small. Really tiny.

----------

I was going to get mine replaced today but I've decided to wait it out for now. Apple is great with their warranty replacements so don't hesitate to swap them out but I have a feeling this will be a common issue and I'd end up with the same issues on the next one.

I called this a few weeks ago when trying on the Sport in store.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1865731/

I never noticed it with the SS but the Sport was difficult to scroll.

OK, so 15 minutes before my appointment the crown got quite hard to turn again and I decided to go in. I'd say 2-3 times harder than normal. I stopped touching it immediately but it was still fine at the appointment so I couldn't show them. The Genius said, "I see what you mean, it is a little harder than normal" but he was just being agreeable so I let him know he needn't be and he admitted it felt normal. Which it did.

Unfortunately there's no replacements in-store so it's a mail-in repair with a 7-10 day wait. That or call the online store and see if they can do a replacement as its within 14 days. I'm going to call and check what the wait will be.

They did have some standard questions in their system for crown issues. One was about time of day it happens, another was does it happen more inside or outside. Maybe it happens due to temperate fluctuations? That's seeming more likely than gunk to me.

Next time you guys get the issue, instead of washing it or scrolling around to loosen it up, just leave it for a little while and see if it sorts itself out. That may indicate (though not conclusively) that it isn't related to gunk that can be cleared by using it.

My money is on temperature changes causing the seal to tighten and increase resistance. At the original Apple Watch event last year the crown apparently had a different feel to the release version so it's obviously something they've tweaked.

Whatever happens with the replacement I'm not confident the next one won't have the same issue.

I'm wondering if there's some way to hide a tiny felt pad behind it, to prevent other gunk from getting between the crown and the case.

As for cleaning, it's funny, my first thought would've been to slide a piece of double-sided tape behind there, like a lot of us do between computer keyboard keys to get lint and hair out.

Water creeps me out because it's not compressible, and I'd hate for any to get trapped. Hey! What about compressed air?

I would really discourage you to try anything like this. You could completely destroy your crown and its waterproof.
I tried the compressed air without luck, for the moment, the best way I found is the water method from Apple.

When I went for my try-on April 10th, I noticed this immediately when comparing Sport/SS models. I asked the Apple guy about it, and he agreed the Sport seemed harder to turn.

The SS crown felt like butter, while the Sport was a bit of a chore. I assumed it was a difference in crown quality, but since I tried only one Sport, I had nothing else to compare it to. Do most have "buttery" crowns on the Sport?

FYI I manage to almost completely eliminate any friction by following Apple guidelines: tuning and clicking the crown under a tap with some water running on it for 15 to 30 sec.

Where'd you find those Apple guidelines?

Same issue here. I've done a few workouts, the scroll started sticking if left for a few minutes. It would have a little bit of resistance on first push then scroll normally.

I've followed apple's cleaning advice and the sticking has stopped but it doesn't feel as smooth as it was. Not sure if I'm being parnoid or it genuinely feels different. Feels hard to push where as I see to remember being impressed with how smoothly it scrolled when out of the box.

I had the same feeling so I went to an AppleStore for an appointment and to test some demo unit to compare to mine. I could tell a slight difference but now, after "washing" my watch for about 30 sec, rolling and clicking the crown, I'm pretty sure I would not be able to tell a difference.

I've thought about doing this, but do you think the demo units would be contaminated as well? Hundreds of people spinning them every day.

No, everything was fine, and even, because the problem appears when you are not touching the crown for few minutes, it would be difficult to reproduce with demo unit.
My goal was to see if I was crazy thinking that my crown was more difficult to turn that the first day.

But they're probably cleaned down at the end of each day plus the demo units MAY have a slightly different setup (more robust crown mechanism, could be if there is no battery - white base unit itself constantly powers it?)

[i'm probably talking a lot of bull though]

Update:

My watch is ready for pickup. It says that it was replaced not repaired.

Will let you know.

42mm SS ...

The crown is definitely giving more resistance since I got it on Friday. I run almost daily and the water rinse didn't seem to help much. Glad to see I'm not alone.

Thanks for the update, and that the SS are also affected. As for a difference in feel, I never really noticed it between the Sport and the SS crowns. just the perceived weight between them.

I went down to the Apple Store earlier. I tested all the display models which were SS and they felt similar to mine, bar 1 which felt how I thought it felt when I opened it out the box.

I booked a try on, the employee showed me a SS and a sport and we tested them and he agreed it didn't feel 'quite right' but wasn't sure why. Advised to get it swapped, because I can and its easy - so I probably will.

I fully expect to have this issue with the next one, based on how 90% of the the ones in store felt, but worth a try
