Environments seem like a trick to avoid having your AR graphics look jittery in the real world since your eyes would be focusing away from the graphics constantly if you could see past them to the room you are in all the time. The environment gives those graphics something to anchor to while keeping your eyes from wondering around too much.

Everyone on this thread is quickly getting to the same point: we may want customizable environments in the future. Maybe Apple should offer something new instead and make it easy for users to view their own high res 360 photos (or videos) in a separate app, just not as an environment.

How many of the environments will be sponsored by various companies? You know, every tree with a carving from Brand A, skywriting with Brand B, big Hollywood sign for Brand C? You know it will happen eventually. Then will come the expansion packs where you can add additional elements, each with their own branding. So you want a pet? It’s got markings for Brand D. That theater look the showed? Brands E and F show up around it. Etc.
