It's a technical limitation, rather than a product one, AFAICT. Both of these features seem to rely on hardware acceleration that only Apple Silicon will have (or the performance may just be too poor to be usable on x86). Those who bought the Mac Pros will have known they were on legacy hardware, and will have expected to be able to upgrade by now
No, it is not. Intel Macs with GPUs that have 8-16 GB VRAM can run this "AI". You just need RAM and VRAM and some CPU threads, and Intel Mac have that (except for RAM maybe). You can run llama and other models locally successfully. On Windows you can even compile "drivers" for your AMD card if it is not supported by the software that runs the models natively. It is easy, there is no magic or hard to do stuff there. I know, because I use llama daily on Intel Mac.

The problem with macOS is that Apple is not willing to write native code to support AI, and it is closed source so there is no AI for Intel Macs. The processor is not the most important thing here, it is RAM and GPU computing power.

Man, I forgot Intel Macs even exist. There must be millions of them out there being used every day.

Does anyone who still has a drobo know if the software works under Sequoia? I’ve been meaning to transfer data off an old one I have.

not supporting Apple Intelligence is maybe a good thing. If I update my Mac mini to Sequoia I will disable all the AI rubbish.
As long as I can disable it, I don't care. But Apple... being Apple, this will be only partially successful just like Siri. I'd just like to properly delete the [cough][cough] features that I don't want and will never use. Come on Apple, let those of us who don't want these new-fangled features to nuke them.

Because AI draws data from the Internet.. the same Internet that is populated with data by humans.. like you and me. It stands to reason that you and I can obtain the same data on our own and do with it what we wish. some people seem to think that using a machine equates to a superior outcome, but they fail to realize that machines lack emotions, feelings, and common sense. Mankind survived just fine without AI this long, we don’t need AI now. No machine will ever be as powerful as the human brain. The problem we need to tackle is laziness.
And people said at one time we didn’t need cars, trains, planes at one point now we use them daily. AI is the future, no stopping it, because humanity took that path long time ago when computers and internet became a thing. Humanity would be better off without the internet probably

Yeah Macs last a long time. It was only last year when I retired my iMac Late 2013 running Catalina. The software was just getting too old for the new stuff like Ai Photo and Video work.

Apple sold the Intel Mac Pro until 2023 so they *should* have Intel build releases until 2028 to avoid potential litigation. The Dual Processor G5 owners got screwed hard, they released with 10.5 Leopard and never got a single OS update. Hopefully Apple won't cut off the Intel Mac Pro's too soon.

For some reason, my 2020 intel iMac can no longer share keyboard and mouse with my iPad. My Mac Studio can still do it so either it's a bug or some weird restriction.

The useful parts of "AI" are the features that we already had before that are now just labelled "AI" to attract investing suckers, like Machine Learning, LLM, and simulation. Energy devouring garbage like Chat GPT will lose popularity when more realise they're not a search engine.

In addition to the above, Cook has created a work environment at Apple where its 160,000+ employees are happy and well compensated in order for the above to happen....
Which explains why Apple Stores across the world are unionizing en masse - because they're happy with the work environment Cook has created

i wish they would remove the arbitrary T2 limitation for phone mirroring. If a windows 95 machine could do remote desktop on 25 year old hardware, there is no crazy hardware required to show a phone screen on your desktop.

Here's a list of Sequoia features that PowerPC Macs, or Motorola 68*** Macs won't support:
All of them.
The last Intel Mac was discontinued in 2019 (that's 50 years in computer lifespans). Get over it and upgrade if you want those features. Or join a Mac User Group and do without them.

Cook is constantly looking for the boundaries. During his time as a ceo the value of money for their products made a nosedive. I personally think this time he has pushed too far. There are bad reviews about the iPhone 16/16pro all over the internet from well established tech reporters. I also saw one comparing a 200 dollar phone with the new iPhone 16. Of course the 200 dollar phone came with 120hz screen refresh 16 gb RAM and 256gb memory standard. It’s a shameful tactic from Apple. I hope people wake up and vote with their wallet. That’s the only way to get a better Apple.

You're proving my point.

People who wants the maximum of features and hardware for the minimum of money, is exactly the kind of customer Cook doesn't care about. It's a type of customer Apple doesn't want.

The same with someone who wants to buy a $200 Android phone.

And for customers who care about specific hardware specifications.

You're not a desirable customer in Apple's point of view and I agree. You would be much happier with a PC and an Android phone.

So nothing of value was lost, in other words. Good to hear I wouldn't be missing out on anything useful.

Honestly, the same can be said about any macOS releases post Catalina. Mostly pointless feature bloat and superfluous garbage tacked onto an increasingly buggy OS.
Bit astounding people still download these extended public beta releases on day 1.

Mac Mini 2018 here…

I can live with that.
Did you update to Sequoia yet? I have a 2018 Mini as well. Not a fan of Sonoma as Safari is worse with websites like facebook. Hoping this release fixes some of that but not hopeful. I just don't want more issues

Questions about 2 factor authentication.
Is it really needed if my computer is home and I don't use iCloud?
If it is activated on the computer will my iPhone automatically get 2 factor as well? I don't want to be somewhere needing to use the iPhone as a GPS (which is all I use it for) and not be able to access the 2 factor.
What exactly is the 2 factor authentication? Does it send a code to a phone or email?
Thanks

I don't care about Apple intelligence. I'm updating my 2019 intel MBP now. Audio transcription is also of no use to me.

I have two M1 Macs to do after this.

Original Rosetta was kept around for about 5-6 years; it was dropped in 10.7 Lion in 2011. We're only a bit over 3 and a half years past the introduction of the M1 in late 2020. Given that Apple is using Rosetta 2 for things like the Game Porting Toolkit, and the fact that the Apple Silicon transition was only completed a year ago (whereas the PPC to Intel transition was completed in 8 months between January and August 2006) we might see Rosetta around for a few more years.
The only reason Rosetta was taken out of Lion was because of IBM not wanting to license the tech to Apple after their contract with them expired. At the time, Apple itself or someone in Apple said that they did not want to stop including it but it was out of their hands. Apple made Rosetta 2 themselves and learned from that past mistake of relying on a third party for such important code.

Not surprised with this. Won't be long before macOS updates are limited only to Apple Silicon.
