I had no interest in this at all before today. Now I am thinking goodbye to my MacBook, television and monitor. It won't be long before I think I won't need an iPhone. Just an Apple Watch and AirPods when out and about, and the VR at home will be fine. I may wait for the second generation, but I am tempted to go for it for it immediately. Given what it can replace I don't think the price is that unreasonable. $2999 would I suspect pull many more people in, but I'm willing to splash $3499 if it is as good as it seems to be.

No first hand impressions…. This thing is not ready yet!

Well, it’s not quite ready to go on sale, but already impressive… I’m mostly interested in using it for ‘regular’ computing on immens virtual screens!

I'd certainly hope I'd get all-day use when plugged in!

I also wonder if the battery pack factors into $3500 being a 'starting' price. Will the entry level model just come with a power lead?

I noticed that they said “all day” specifically and not “indefinite” or something like that.

They also call it “nearly silent” which means it’s going to have fans and possibly be warm.

Even though they show people just going about their day with it on, the limit is going to be the human more than the tech I think.

In ten years we will look back at this video (through our AR glasses) and laugh at how antiquated it looks.

At $3,500 a piece, all the apps being developed for it will not be fully utilized because, at that price point, it is out of reach for most Apple users, except a very few (probably the same ones who were able to afford the $930 Hermes AirPod Pro leather case lol)

Every year I hope this is the year they issue a tiny iOS update that forces all iphones in the world to only record video in landscape. We already have an oddball era of data loss because after shooting everything on film 35mm and 8mm, the world switched to video and it's so awful to look at, those decades of the worlds history are just being discarded. Spending 15 years with people shooting tiny slivers of vertical video was just as terrible, bc as time goes by everyone's going to ask themselves, is this video really worth cropping 2/3 of it off to a low-res Landscape and then having Ai reonstruct the relevant content in a higher resolution so we can see it again?
i bought a gopro to my wife and told her to film in landscape. she not listen to me and film everything in portrait mode just because it is easier to watch on phones.
imagine going to movies and the new standard is movies in 9:16. some people are to lazy to turn a phone 90 deg. the movie experience in portrait is plain wrong.

God this sounds promising:

It does genuinely seem like this could be the biggest breakthrough in technology since the original iPhone announcement.

Crazy to think we may no longer need TVs, cinemas, video game consoles, computers etc. in 2 years time!

If Apple can do this, they will have broke physics and they would be a $1,000 trillion company.
I meant touching it as in tracking your arms, hands and fingers with cameras and depth sensors so you can have a touch interface on a 3D environment without accessories

Yes why spend $25 going to the cinema with a friend when you can spend $3500 to watch a movie alone (once its finished it's run at the cinema and hits Apple TV)

$3,500 is not “incredibly expensive”.

Apple filed 5000 patents and assembly is not automated. The first Mac in 1984 cost $7000+ 2023 dollars. Twice the cost of this product. Innovation, R&D cost money. Eventually prices will become more affordable and possibly at different price points.

Imagine the potential for watching live sports on this! Front row of the NBA court or halfway line at Old Trafford in the Premier League...

Apple Watch and AirPods never happened huh?
Apple Watch was clearly being developed while he was still at the helm, but he wasn’t involved all along and that showed as it has been for a long time quite uninspired and it lacked direction. It is only in future versions that apple decided to make it mostly a fitness tracker, initially it was some sort of fashion wearable iPhone but apps never took of and the premium materials never sold well and were discontinued.

AirPods are good but nothing innovative. Other companies have been making true wireless EarPods and apple’s version doesn’t have anything special to it other than a neater integration with iOS.

I thought we were past “Steve jobs would never” comments like…10 years ago? Guess not
Well, I think they’ve only introduced two meaningful new product categories since Steve Jobs death, AR/VR and smartwatches. I think it’s fine to question if Apple continues to try to push technology forward the way Steve has done in the past. I personally don’t feel like Vision Pro has done this. But maybe actually trying it for myself will change my mind

I thought this was DOA. I was wrong. I think this is revolutionary. It’s not a VR device like I imagined. It’s an AR device.

I could totally see myself buying this or buying a future version.

I work a lot while traveling. One of my main issues is not having a big external monitor when I’m away from home. This solves that problem for me and integrates with my MacBook Pro.

Also, the $3500 price tag is fine. Just think of it as buying an M2 Mac, a 3D 100” OLED screen and an iPhone in one.

I’m excited to see this in person and excited for the second version. I’m betting that by version 3, it will be purchased by the masses. The first one is obviously aimed at developers first.

Overtime, it will get more powerful, lighter, longer battery life, and cheaper. It will eventually have a great non-pro version for the masses.
That’s a very good use case scenario for this. I could picture being in a hotel room with a not so great TV and being able to kick back and watch a big screen movie too. Lots of possibilities.

That being said I do worry about 3 things:

1. Motion sickness as I am QUITE prone to it.

2. Comfort, as I am really sensitive to things being worn on my head.

3. Theft potential. At that price it will be a tempting target for thieves. On a trip I would feel like I had to watch it ALL the time.

Ive want Apple Watch would be the next Apple revolution, killing the iPhone.
Apple CDA “Think different”.
Watch was killed by Apple, the luxury was here only for Miss Burberry.

It’s incredible to finally see Apple’s headset. Using computers for 30+ years, I’ve daydreamed about virtual reality: imagining the sci-fi tech, how we’d interface with it, and how it could be integrated into daily life.

It’s exciting to see so much of Apple’s design language culminate in this new hardware. The design is beautiful and strange.

I said this before the announcement, but I am so looking forward to constructing and exploring 3D environments. I haven’t even considered the myriad AR applications. I can’t wait to try one out next year.

$3,500. That’s a very small audience it’s going to find for itself. Apple fanboys and directors of futuristic thrillers in Hollywood comes to mind. The boy wanting to watch Disney + might not be able to afford it with his pocket money
The first Mac in 1984 cost $7000 in 2023 money. Innovation, research and development cost money. $3.5k is not “expensive”. Production costs are high presently.
