It's been years, probably a decade since I was genuinely wowed by an Apple event. All those new Macs! Pro Macs coming.. with real GPUs.. It was like back when I was a youngling (sniff)

Awesome event, look forward to the iMac Pro and Mac Pro.
[doublepost=1496727386][/doublepost]I did not hear the words 'Mac Pro' mentioned. That iMac Pro is a powerful machine, but like my 2013 Mac Pro it's not easily upgradable and, maybe, not upgradable at all.

A real workstation basically is a server in a desktop chassis: Brutal compute power with lots of available upgrade options. Those iMacs are BTOs and cannot be upgraded later. At this price point, that's a no-go.

The old Mac Pros were real workstations, no wonder they are still being sold on eBay like crazy. The iMacs are beautiful desktops, but their hardware design is too limited.

Agreed. I'm very unimpressed with the iMac Pro. I know others are gushing over the novelty of it but it's a product that makes absolutely no sense. It seems to be the latest result of the muddled roadmap Apple is stuck on. All-in-ones are great for consumers who want a decent machine with minimal hassle. Why Apple thinks an all-in-one caters to a crowd that is open to a degree of complication with their computer set-up is beyond me. Apple seems to be stuck in one gear with their desktop offerings. They need to stop underestimating the intelligence and computer-savvy of their user base. It's not 1998. Computers aren't that mystifying to people anymore. The iMac concept isn't the be-all end-all.

Despite being a pro user with relatively substantial processing and graphics needs, I must admit that the new iMac Pro meets them quite nicely (and expensively). I would prefer to have those internals in a box sans display, however. I believe that is where the modular Mac Pro comes into play.

It's strange to me that they put the work in making an imac pro but couldn't bother to at least refresh the Mac Pro (that was supposed to be so groundbreaking when introduced and then languished for years). Apple's attention to the pro user market has gotten beyond embarrassing.

Did you even listen when Apple talked about the pro market last month?

1) By the time they realised that they had painted themselves into a thermal corner by making the wrong bet on dual GPUs (and them staying at the same size/temperature requirements)
2) they scrambled to come up with an iMac Pro instead (which is what was announced now)
3) They also realised along the way that neither of these designs would appeal to all pros
4) Hence the new modular Mac Pro being developed for 2018

They made a bad bet, realised too late, apologised for it and promised to make up for it. Not sure what more you can ask.

iMac Pro looks excellent and is a strong return to the Pro market. I can't help but feel that forcing me to use that display is a rip off though.
Not being totally ungrateful - lots of encouraging things today - but I really don't want to spend an extra $2000+ when I already have many monitors that suit my needs.

Lets hope the fabled modular Mac Pro and a return of the Mini are on the horizon.

I'd pay $3000+ for the iMac Pro internals - I just can't bring myself to spend the rest for the 5K display - not every professional needs it.

Apple actually has people feeling "grateful" (or ungrateful) with what they decide to release … really?

No, I don't even to listen to everything Apple says every month. "Scambling" — now there's a savvy marketing approach for the world's richest tech company. Reminds me of the post/pre Jobs era.

pity it doesn't support Apple tv, I was hoping for 4K H265 support. Imagine home cinema 8 speakers from Apple but I guess they would have to make reciever some sort or completely new codec.

I don't doubt that it sounds decent. I do doubt it's worth $349 to me. I've already got an Echo Dot, and I recently replaced my bedroom system (Denon AVR, Energy RC Minis) with a Bose Revolve at $199. That speaker has a battery and is thus portable, plus it can be a USB speaker if my main system ever goes down. I never thought I would own a piece of Bose gear, but that thing has really exceeded my expectations, both in absolute terms and in comparison to other Bluetooth speakers I tried. I was a little worried I'd have buyer's remorse when Apple released its speaker, but not anymore. I do look forward to the inevitable comparison!

This alone kills the HomePod for me personally. I need it to have the ability to move easily around my home, including outside. It could have filled the gaps for me where I have don't have nicer speakers available, but alas, I'll patiently wait for v2. I've got other things to spend money on for the time being.

$349 for the speaker is ridiculous.

The regular Echo can be had for $149 and the Echo Show which has a goddamn screen and speaker is $249.
Odds are that being Apple it will be better. But obviously each of us makes our own financial choices.

That old mac pro will disappear unfortunately...by end of this year..at least no longer being supported. Imac pro is really good for what it is.

I always find it hilarious to read the comments on MR after an apple event. There were Macs, both laptops and real exteme pro hardware, there were updates for the ipads that the crowd have longed for, awesome ios 11 features and the HomePod that's set at an extremely competitive price. All you do is moan "it's still too expensive, i can't afford the iMac Pro, the macbook pro is still useless, where's my mac mini, etc etc etc". Apparently NOTHING is good enough and yet Apple was showing their good side at WWDC.

It's almost as if Apple has a huge following, including people with wildly different desires and needs. I agree with you though, this was an above average Apple event IMO. The greatest, no, but definitely a good one. That was clear from the get go when Tim said, no time for Apple business updates, let's get right to it.

Apple didn't say it was an echo competer.. This is a hifi product, which uses the room's acoustics to produce sound. See it as a satellite speaker, which fills the room with greater sound, than normal bose speakers or so.
The siri thing was just announced as a secondary thing.

Now we have to wait for the reviews to come in after december, to see if its true :)

Okay, so it's obvious Apple will bring more functionality to this later on - Tim even said so in an interview yesterday. But the reason I'm concerned about this is that, I can't see how they can regularly update the hardware on this thing. Apple don't like products which mean they can't force consumers to buy a new one every few years. What I'm saying is, I hope adding new voice commands/features doesn't mean we all have to go out and buy a new one. Cause that really would be screwing consumers over.

The only thing I could think they might upgrade would be the microprocessor, but even then Siri is all cloud based so the device isn't actually thinking for itself anyway. A speaker upgrade? I can't see them updating this hardware for years.

I'm confused... is the Pro starting or up to $4999? Some same that's the starting point, others that's the price of the maxed out 18 core 128Gb version.. need some clarity?

Are there any pictures of the HomePod next to something for scale? I'm trying to figure out how big it is. So far I feel like its twice as big as Phil Schiller.
It's 7", they mentioned the size at the keynote.

Any news on whether this will pair nicely with the Apple TV? Manually powering on my bluetooth speaker and regularly having to force connect it via settings is a pain in the arse.

Black one looks sexy. White one looks like trash

It depends on your furniture. I have white doors in my house, and most of my furniture is white as well. I also have a piano in my living room, and I like how its black colour contrast with the furniture and the walls.
So I'd buy the black version, and put it on a white shelf, to create contrast.
But in some other rooms I may prefer to put a white speaker so I can barely notice it since walls are painted in white.
In the kitchen for example I have a tv with white bezels and it looks better than a black tv, I'd never put a black speaker there.
