Samsung yesterday announced its latest flagship foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold 4. The new foldable is the company's fourth foldable handset and comes just weeks before Apple plans to announce the iPhone 14.

The Fold 4, compared to last year's Fold 3, has minor tweaks and improvements to build quality, display, user interface, and cameras. Here we've compared five Galaxy Fold 4 features with new features expected for the upcoming iPhone 14.

New Display Material

The Galaxy Fold 4 utilizes Samsung's latest display technology and the company's M12 material set. The new display material, compared to past generations, offers richer colors and improved brightness.

According to a report from The Elec, that same material set is rumored to be used for the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max displays. The lower-end models of the iPhone 14 will stick with the M11 material set.

Other than the benefits offered by the new display material, no other display tech changes are rumored for this year's upcoming iPhone. Apple introduced ProMotion with support for up to 120Hz in the iPhone 13 Pro last year.

48MP Wide Camera

The Galaxy Fold 4 features an improved main camera with a 50MP lens and f/1.8 aperture. Paired with improved on-device image processing, Samsung says the hardware and software changes will yield better quality images and videos.

The iPhone 14 Pro is rumored to be gaining some significant camera improvements, including a major boost in the main camera. Compared to the current 12MP wide camera on the highest-end iPhone, the iPhone 14 Pro is likely to feature a 48MP wide camera.

The iPhone 14 Pro will be capable of taking 48MP photos when lighting conditions are ideal, but when they're not, the iPhone will resort to a process known as pixel-binning to take 12MP images. The iPhone 14 Pro's wide camera is also said to be receiving a 21% larger sensor to provide more detail to photos and improved low light capabilities.

The iPhone 14 Pro is also rumored to be capable of recording 8K video, the first ever for an iPhone. The Galaxy Fold 4, like current iPhones, is capable of recording 4k at 60FPS.

WiFi 6E

Originally rumored for the iPhone 13, this year's iPhone 14 could be the first iPhone to feature the newer WiFi 6E standard. The new standard offers improved speed, range, and capacity on public networks.

The Galaxy Fold 3 was the first Galaxy Fold to support WiFi 6E, with the Galaxy Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 following suite. You can learn more about WiFi 6E and the improvements it offers here.

Faster Performance

The Galaxy Fold 4 is powered by Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chips that are based on the 4nm fabrication process and can reach speeds of up to 3.2GHz. The iPhone 14 Pro will feature Apple's new and faster A16 Bionic chip.

Both the Galaxy Fold 4 and the iPhone 14 will be equally fast and speedy for the majority of customers and their day-to-day workflows. One difference, however, will be RAM. The Galaxy Fold 4 features 12GB of RAM that enables true multitasking on the device, while the iPhone 14 Pro, like current high-end iPhones, is expected to feature just half of that.

The RAM on the upcoming iPhone will feature LPDDR 5 type of memory, which is faster than previous models. This means that even with just 6GB of RAM coupled with iOS's memory management, the iPhone 14 Pro is likely to remain competitive with Samsung's 12GB of RAM offering.

Better Selfies

On the outside display, the Galaxy Fold 4 has a 10MP selfie camera, and the inside features an under-the-display 4MP camera. Like the Galaxy Fold 4, the iPhone 14 will feature an upgraded front camera.

Rumors point to the iPhone 14's selfie camera being a "high-end" camera with a wider f/1.9 aperture and autofocus capabilities. The wider aperture will allow more light to pass through the lens to reach the sensor for sharper, crisper photos and improved depth of field.

Why we are comparing a fragile smartphone with a solid one ?!

0 DUST rest on a foldable in this days of age where is more dust in the world like never before.....is like going backwards, is like paying money for your own suffering

There has been a lot of this late on this website, where we are comparing features of a non-existent, but we think maybe, new iPhone and existing products.... I know the writers want to keep the website fresh, however, maybe energy might be spent elsewhere.. Improvement to guides and video guides, etc.. Not a dig, just a suggestion.. This is still the only mac website I visit for news..

I’m seriously sick of these articles trying to compare **** sizes between these two companies. The only comparison that would matter is the Galaxy series. But they’re released so far apart from the iPhone it doesn’t matter.

Yes, competition is good. But they aren’t released side by side so who cares.

If a new buyer is really hung up on which way to buy, these type of articles are helpful (maybe). Other than that it turns into a ‘my chip is smaller and faster than your chip’ thread.

Agreed.. It's going to be hard to compare a product so different to the existing apple lineup.. The writers could focus on the Samsung product itself.. Maybe folding will be a good thing in the future, maybe not.. Apple is very or almost always not first to market with many products.. Let Samsung break the path and see how things go.. They have improved the folding system by the looks of it, so crushing dirt between the glass seems not be as big an issue as before.. We can be sure apple has something like this in R&D and solving similar issues..

You mean show Apple how not to do things over a 4-5 year period while Apple refines similar features before releasing it.

Couldn’t agree more. Keep it up, Sammy.
It’s called learning and refining, something Apple is also good at doing. Shouldn’t you appreciate that? The iPhone 13 has refined and improved over the iPhone X despite looking nearly the same.

BOTH products can BOTH be good. It’s not one or the other.

100% Agree.

This is just a non article…

Anyway, clickbait I guess makes the site run and run.

But the quality of fluff appearing recently on MacRumors is just a bit sad.

Personally, it doesn't seem like any smartphone comparison is complete without also acknowledging that any Apple product benefits from the full weight of the Apple ecosystem. Just based on that alone, the galaxy fold would be considered a hard sell compared to even the cheapest iPhone in Apple's lineup. 😛

Yeah I’m here too. I truly do appreciate Samsung trying something different but Apple has me locked in. I’m not even sure how I could get away from it. Sucks because seems hardware innovation is happening elsewhere but I can’t leave lol.

I agree, it’s the evolution of technology. It’s how it works.

But your post aimed that Apple wouldn’t have any good ideas without Samsung. Therefore they have to copy the ideas.

I’m saying Apple isn’t in a rush to be first. They take notes, refine and the implement what they want when it’s right for them. You say “copy” and I say a well worth wait for something that ends up being above the rest (Face ID for example) in quality.

I’ve owned BOTH and liked BOTH. I think they BOTH need to exist. 👊😁👍

Makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!!! Tech Bros 😃

My gut feeling is that Samsung's Galaxy fold phones will travel the same route as Samsung's curved displays.

I acknowledge they're putting alot of effort into this style of phone, but I cannot see enough market penetration from my perspective.

Even though I have no facts and figures to verify my perspective.

Yeah I think at some point I wouldn’t mind carrying the latest Galaxy S series and of course iPhone. I have owned several Samsung electronics products (mostly TVs and home entertainment) and have had very good experiences. I prefer the integration of Apple’s ecosystem but still really appreciate some of the hardware Samsung puts out.

I often wonder if that’s the consensus of most folks on here. If Apple didn’t tie us in to the ecosystem and make it doubly hard to leave, I wonder how many would switch.

Same, I agree. iPhone and Apples ecosystem fit me better as an everyday user. But if I could afford to carry the newest of each all the time and switch out SIMs depending on my mood for the day, I would. Love my Sammy TV and enjoyed the Samsung phones I’ve owned in the past, but iPhone is where my heart is 😝

I do love the idea of having a phone which folds out into a proper tablet size (one's eyesight is not all that it once was, my right arm however is incredibly muscular :D)

What I don't like however, is the price, the bulk, and the fragility of the screen.
Two of those factors are not going to be easy to rectify any time soon, the limits of physics will have to be *ahem, bent a bit. I have little doubt that in years to come, battery technology will improve drastically, and we will finally get higher capacity, but much smaller and thinner cells. And glass may be further refined to improve flexibility and durability, or perhaps some new polycarbonate formulation will replace it, who knows.

Essentially, I want the foldable phone that's available 15 years from now, blinking long wait :D

I tried the Fold 3 just to see if I could like it. It was cool as a novelty item but not something I'd want to carry around with me every day. If it ran iOS that might be a different story but I'm just not a fan of Android and I'm in way too deep with Apple to leave their ecosystem.

I'd much prefer a device like the Z Flip. If Apple made a phone like that I'd be on it in a second.

I’m the first to admit I’m an Apple guy, though I generally have an Android device kicking around as well, so until Apple brings one out, I’m unlikely to own one that will be my daily driver.

But even Apple will have to overcome the thickness of basically 2 devices sandwiched together when closed, and make it more durable, before I’ll even consider one from them either.

Not to mention, I dread to think what the Apple Price will be when the Samsung Fold 4 is almost 2 grand.
