Here's Why the iPhone Battery Status Icon in iOS 16 Is So Controversial

So if they are going to keep the body of the battery icon filled for legibility, why not simply have it turn gradually from deep green to lighter green to yellow, orange, then red? That removes the need to deal with the line that intersects the numbers as the battery depletes. It would provide an immediate indication of the general status by its color. I think most people are familiar with the idea of a green to red gradient to indicate health. And if the digits were black, they would be more legible.
So turn it off... it's optional. And thanks for deciding what we all want for us.

We should have an option to customise the status bar in its entirety - that would be a new feature. This in itself is not really a feature at all in my opinion. I already get a good enough estimate with the existing battery glyph and on the off chance that I need to see the exact estimated battery life percentage remaining, it’s literally just a swipe down.
It takes me more effort to unlock the phone with a swipe up, or do pretty much anything else on the phone, than it does to check the battery percentage.

Apple offer several alternatives, each of which address some of the issues. (And only fail at all when there are contradictory requirements.)
Apple's statistics show fewer than one in a thousand ever change the settings throughout the life of IOS16, and maybe 17 as well. New and existing phones.
Apple decide to stick with just the one that almost everyone chose.

I've gotton used to swiping down to check it via control center. However, the version in the current beta doesn't look satisfying. How about offering multiple options Apple? You can do it for the Lockscreen after 15 years too.
Version A looks better in my humble opion. Second 'best' is option B. Option C and the Brian suggestion don't feel right to me.

I just hope the make the font bigger and at least add an option to make the text always black. All the SS on here it's nice and big, but on the phone it's small. The ones with borders might be good, but I'd have to see it on my phone real size

Over 50% I agree showing full battery icon. Guys, it's not about hitting 100% and staying there, it's about showing at a glance whether you got enough juice. Below 50%, level should be half or less and red at 20%
Just go back to the old version where the percent is outside of the icon. And stop lying about how much room you have to work with.
Right, but what I was getting at is, it doesn’t have to be both. Why try and smush a battery icon and % together when Apple could just give people the option of displaying a battery icon, or a %. Having both displayed seems redundant, but that’s just me.

There is no room. Well there is room if you want to make fonts and elements so small that you need microscope to see them, otherwise no, there is no roomJust go back to the old version where the percent is outside of the icon. And stop lying about how much room you have to work with.
Why would Apple change it for the final release if no one is giving them feedback about why they don't like the current iteration? I agree that this is not a big deal, and I think people are reading too much into this. I don't think anyone makes this out to be a huge deal. But it never hurts providing feedback, otherwise, you can't really expect anything to change.
All these comments complaining about people complaining. 🤔
If you would move them a bit and lessen the spacing you could probably fit it just fine. You also have room on both sides of the icons in the top right corner.

Apple should not have eliminated the battery percentage indicator in the first place. I can't believe we survived 5+ years without it. I'm just happy I don't have to swipe down every time to check for my battery. that part alone has been annoying.

How so? The battery itself doesn't drop like it used to.
“ design could be better “ when a $90 android phone has this feature YEA , IT SHOULD BE BETTER.

That's actually a great idea. But Apple likes it keep it simple. It might be too complicated for them.
