I see the rationale behind making it plugged-in only, but why not give us the choice?

I too would appreciate the choice, but it would only lead to average consumers ranting that their battery is terrible and Siri keeps activating, because they're not smart enough to read the description in the settings and understand what it means.

Besides, if we get an iwatch they'll probably let you activate siri from that, so no need to walk across the room and hold down your home button...

Make it a habit to plug your phone into your car when you drive. Then "Hey, Siri" will work.

Defeats the purpose of having Bluetooth streaming in the car. I like being able to keep my phone in my bag instead of having to plug it in, take it out, etc.

Which is way battery life sucks on Android (that and the fact that Google Play Services exists).

Luckily, Android L addresses this with ART, JobScheduler, less wakelocks. Arstechnica got 36 percent better battery life of screen time.

Yup. I have both of my iPads (Mini and Air) plugged into my computer at work all day, and they frequently light up with "What can I do for you?" at random moments.

I find that hilarious.

Hope they fix it.

Imagine walking into a huge office and yelling HEY SIRI while everyone's ipads and iphones are plugged in

the moto x (which debuted this feature) has a separate processor specifically for this. tuned to save battery by devoting the processor's focus to one single thing.

running the iphone's CPU constantly just to listen for hey siri would kill batt.

same reason they didn't introduce constant movement tracking until the iPhone 5S with the M7 (a separate processor devoted to just that).

Nope... The Google now thing can only done when you wake up the devices and now you can spake to your phone without going to home screen. Siri needs be plugged in when you use voice activation.

But iPhone is not known for its battery life... It is not one of the strong thing for iPhone

This is exactly why. I know a genius who told me that over half of the people complaining about battery life have every feature on and brightness set to 100%.
I don't expect to HAVE to turn off features and lower brightness to have decent battery life when I pay 800$ for a phone. Apple should stop cutting millimeter here and there and go with a 2800+ man battery like most android flagships. I've been using a LG G2 since November, and while then iPhone 6 with iOS 8's features will probably make me come back I have a hard time imagining myself having tonplug my phone at 4 or 5pm like I had to do with my 4S.

Not necessarily... Google Launcher constantly listen to "OK Google" without kill the battery life... Loving the this feature...

Only when your screen in on. The feature would murder standby time if it was actively listening for the key words 24/7. The Moto X has a special chip dedicated to listening for the key phrase that uses very little power, the iphone 6 might have something similar.

I feel like stuffing a bigger battery in it is cheating. Apple increased slightly the battery life of the iPad Air (reviews said maximum 14 hours when watching videos.. Apple says 10) while dropping the battery capacity. I have faith that Apple can do this once again but increase the battery capacity so that the battery life is improved. But we'll see.

I just noticed that the "Hey Siri!" thing just works when the device is plugged. Kinda letdown...

It's a battery saving thing. The battery drains so damn quickly when it's listening all the time. Don't believe me? Jailbreak and install the app that makes Siri listen all the time. Really hope they get it sorted out though since I want my phone to be like JARVIS dammit. I'd use Siri so much.

Plus, you should remember that with many other features of iOS 8, your phone will be plugged in much more often since e it can hand off calls to other iOS devices.

Have you *seen* it? It's uncreative, bland, and boring - it brings nothing to the table except making everything look like crappy versions of mobile sites.

I havent just seen it, I used it a bit. I really like it. Except, a few things like the colored statusbar & navbar, I dig it. And it looks a bit like some UI overlays from certain OEMS with a mix of Windows 8, IOS 7 and OS X.

But, I don't find it boring or bland, or unimaginative. The ux is very nice. Love the animations too.

I'm actually kinda surprised they didn't, considering they already have a switch in Siri's settings for activating her by raising the phone up to your ear. That requires the proximity sensor to be running whenever the display is on, which I have to imagine has some (even if it's negligible) effect on the battery.
So it's surprising they didn't just add another switch for "Hey Siri!" much like Google did for "Ok, Google" in Google Now.

When I was still using the iOS 8 beta, the Hey, Siri! command would activate when I had my iPhone plugged into my computer and listening to music or watching movies. I guess certain sounds of either made the iPhone think it was saying that!

Sorry but there's no way you can call it nice. It's basically a badly themed stock "mobile version" of any blog or site out there.

Google honestly dropped the ball and are clumsily kicking it further down the street trying to pick it up. They NEED to hire some COMPETENT designers if they want to salvage anything from it.

Or since it's mostly subjective some can like it and others can not like it without any group being crazy somehow because of it. That said, seems like this is off topic anyway.

Since it only works when you woke up the phone, CPU is running anyway... So when it listening the voice command, microphone needed be on... Then active the CPU to process the command..and based on my experience, it really doesn't kill battery life with constant "OK Google" feature...

There are android phones that work with ok google when the phone isn't woken up. Such as the Moto x. It has a separate low circuit processor that it always ruining to listen for ok google. So even when the phone is asleep it works. That is what we're all talking about my friend.

I got a response from Apple in regards to the bug report I submitted for the 'Hey Siri' feature not working I f the phone is connected to Bluetooth. They said that Engineering has determined that my bug report is a duplicate of another issue and will be closed. I haven't received this kind of response for any of the other bug reports I have submitted. In the past I've always gotten an email asking if the issue has been fixed in the latest beta. Has anyone else received an email like this for a big report? I assume it means someone else submitted a bug report for the same issue, so they closed mine because they don't need two open cases that are the same and they are still working on it, but I'm not really sure.
Yep that's common and it means what you thought -- that you opened a defect that someone already opened. Of the 68 bugs I've opened so far, 40 have been closed -- 37 were resolved and 3 were duplicates.

Back on topic...Hey Siri only seems to work sometimes (and of course never when I'm trying to show someone) Siri has a hard stopping listening if there are other conversations going on around me. And while I'm bitchin' about Siri, she only listens to music Shazam-style once in a blue moon and naturally never when a good song is playing. As soon as a crappy song is playing, she's all ears. Here's to hoping that Beta 4 will be better. :)

Happened at home. My son walked in, said "Hey Siri (pause) Message my wife Your a bi*ch", then walked out before I could stop it. He is so grounded, but was funny as hell afterwards, well to us, but alas the wife did not see it that way

Thanks! I was hoping that's what it was.

Just installed Beta 4 and it looks like 'Hey Siri' doesn't work at all now.
