I don’t see them keeping the M1 mini. The M1X will replace it. Why leave Intel if you keep selling the same computer without an updated processor for over a year anyway?

Don't care about the price. As a tool, it's cheap compared to a truck.
Just want 64gb / 2tb min, 3080 or quicker graphics equivalent. 4 thunderbolt, HDMI, fast ethernet, 4 x thunderbolts.
Preferably built in handle or no bigger than existing.
Apple 43" x 4k screens. PLEASE.
You'll be wanting a Mac Pro not a Mac Mini if you want 3080 level of graphics performance. I'm sure the M1X will be a great leap over the M1, but that's asking for a lot.

Wow. lots of interest in the new souped up arm Mac mini!
almost 230 comments already here
Could this be the iMac killer? with all the interest.
At least with a Mac mini your monitor breaks down you can get it replaced easier than a built In iMac screen.
Cost is my big question? Has the high end Mac mini become too expensive now ?

It is Apple's entry level, I have a trackpad, mouse and display, if I am gonna get a new entry MM than that's the cheapest I can get, so...it's entry level.

But...I won't buy the entry level MM, I go for M1X.
So you spent more for the Mac mini, only you paid for it all in more than one purchase. I don’t think price exclusively defines entry level, but already owning something does make those things free. They were paid for at some point, and that cost needs to be included.

This is what has kept me from replacing my 2012 Mini. I may just get an iMac to avoid these issues.
I would - I‘ve tried everything, it makes me batty. So now I’m using the Apple media adapter whcih is like $80 just so i can intermittently experience some success waking it up.

And then the magic mouse - there’s no excuse for that. Even of my M1 MBA it has issues.

lazy journalism, imagine if you tried that at work, hey i'll turn in the report in the next several months lol
LOL. Mark is one of the hardest-working, most reliable reporters out there. I have a lot of respect for him. If he doesn't tell when the new mini will drop is because his sources were not sure.

Why would you want fanless though? You’d be wasting the performance capability of the chip
Because I don't like noise. Any noise. Loving my M1 MacBook Air and a big part of that is because it never makes any sound, ever.

Plus, the fan in the current M1 Mini only accounts for a very marginal increase in performance over an M1 MacBook Air, about 1.3% single-core and 3.8% multicore. That's not even noticeable. In GPU performance, the Mini does do slightly better, besting the Air by 6.7%, but that is also not that significant.

The M1 MacBook Air and Mini are for all practical purposes identical in performance. Given that, I'll take a small performance hit in exchange for silence.

You have never been able to downgrade a Mac below the OS it shipped with.
I don't know if direct downgrades were possible, but the same result could be easily achieved with a workaround. My 2011 MacBook Pro came with Lion (10.7). I didn't like it, so I put Snow Leopard (10.6) on it. It was really simple. I'd been using Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my last MBP (2008), which was running 10.6, so I just put that clone onto my 2011 MBP. It ran without issue.

I also know of a production company that ran into numerous problems with Catalina on their new Mac Pros, and managed to figure out how to downgrade to Mojave, but the process was quite involved.

So it seems downgrading can be done with workarounds, but the process has gone from being very easy to very hard.

Why does Apple want to turn its 'entry level' Mac into a high end one?
I'm not so sure it wasn't that way already -- my intel Mac Mini has 64G of RAM and an i7 processor and many ports. Seems like whatever this new mini is, is a replacement for that. I cost quite a bit more than an entry level M1 MBM.

As an After Effects user (of which the apple silicon beta will be released this fall), I just want an updated Apple Silicon.
The first one that comes out will be the one I get as I'm experiencing the limits of the m1 chip, especially with regards to GPU power and RAM.

Having already a set of high quality peripherals and displays, I'd really prefer the mac mini as it is even more portable than the macbook (speaking of moving abroad, which I'm planning to do post-covid) and I'd be able to get a machine with 64GB of ram and 512GB SSD within 2000$.

In the case of the macbooks, I'm expecting the price for the new mini-LED to be quite high, making the computers outrageously expensive...
I really hope Apple will release the new mac mini alongside the 14" and 16" macbooks; it is not impossible.
I clearly remember everybody expecting the announcement of the 24" iMac and macbook air as the first apple silicon computers, yet we ended up getting 3 computers, including the mini.

With regards to the M1 experience, I have actually been quite surprised, and I knew I would have had problems with After Effects, but I wated to give apple faith and be an early adopter.
One thing I noticed, though, is that despite keeping the computer clean, I noticed the experience of using big sur to be more buggy and sluggish with every new update...The computer surely feels less responsive, that's why I'm planning a nice format.
We'll see...

I really hate that Mark Gurman has switched to ******** claims like "in the next several months" when he's too afraid to give an exact date.
Because it's going to be 99% correct... "next several months" ranges from 2..200++... If Apple doesn't release at least a performance increase to the M1 chip within 16 years, there's a high chance of Chapter 11 happening in that time frame.

The Mac mini was too expensive for too long, and the M1 finally brought more value at a better price. Still a touch high for a "mini" computer. It should have a matching "mini" price, too, but can't have it both ways. Wonder what this new M1X mini will be priced at?

What? You want Apple to release new displays that are only 102 DPI? Even with the 24" iMac's 4.5k that would only be 120 DPI at 43". Apple isn't going to release new displays with resolution less than 200 DPI.

The M1 even a year later is still an exceptional processor. It’s also a matter of price point. They can sell the M1 mini for a lower cost compared to an M1X machine.

It’s sort of like saying why would Intel sell an i3 when they can just sell an i9. Because of price, features, and demographics.

M1 mini is the consumer mini
M1X mini is the prosumer mini

Maybe. Depends on what M1X brings, might only be a refinement with more addressable ram. If that’s the case it could replace existing.
If however there is across the board increases, then it makes sense to maintain ‘entry level’. That way the M1X can filter down when ’high end‘ gets updated.

Apple liked How they could charge over a grand for intel minis so they want to do the same thing with the m1. Otherwise they would have to update the cheaper model to m1x and that’s too much of a bargain. Now they can keep the low end perpetually stuck with the same m1 for years and mostly update the more expensive one a year behind the iMacs. If m1x is coming to 30in iMacs then the faster mini will probably be over twice as expensive as the base model m1 mini. Otherwise it would eat into m1 iMac sales. But if they update all imacs to m1x and kept prices the same then it would be another huge deal like the m1 was when it came in at good price points.
