Would it be a good idea to differentiate the permanently banned from the temporarily banned maybe? :)
I wouldn't mind, but it's out of my control. From my lowly level, there's only one category: Banned. I'm not sure if it's even settable within vB.

I prefer the well-rounded and convivial forum experience to those that are strictly on-topic and more retentive about it, but the added degree of openness places a greater burden on the mods to keep things in line.

I have been on forums where the mods and/or forum owners just didn't step up and apply discipline -- er, guidance -- in a consistent, visible way, which led the way to abuses and overdramatics that drove many regular contributors away. Some other forums just "disappear" bad threads or users, leaving everyone else to speculate or come up with wild theories about the disappearances, which harbors an even deeper feeling of paranoia and mistrust.

I really appreciate that the mods are visibly going about their work here, reinforcing the standards of the community. They communicate well, and that's the key.

Want to log on as me for a while? ;)

Sorry but I have to keep my standards. <ducks>

I remember a certain member asking me if I would let him log on as me. :D

Wait... Weren't you a mod?

...Or was I daydreaming again

I were but not now, though I could return to it temporarily, if you people need discipline.

Oh, I'm very random. People'd just think I was in one of my stricter moods. :)

As a lowly mod, I would never even try to find out....

lexus For some reason, the early months of this year have had fewer of what I call spamvertisers (people who join to post an ad and link to a commercial site), and those constitute many of the bans.

sorry if i don't get it. if i say something like "look what i found guys... refurbished dell notebooks for 499 $ (points to link)" in a thread titled "g5 powerbooks out next tuesday"... that would get me banned?

or does it mean, pointing to less known (although one can argue with this) commercial site e.g. freeipod.com.

All I know is that you can't ban yourself when you're a moderator. :D

It is differentiated. You just can't tell...for that matter, I just can't tell anymore. :D

no, but if you register a username, and only put commercial links in your post, then that's going to get you banned. it's not illegal to post a link to a good deal you found on amazon or dell.com or whatever...

I am hesitant to have another administrator temporarily ban me to see what happens, in case it messes up something else as a side effect. So we won't try it "for the sake of knowledge" and we'll just have to stay curious.

However, if arn doesn't like an administrator's work, he can certainly demote them to a non-admin moderator, to a regular member, or boot them out completely.

I think epepper9 was right in that thread. Bannished would mean the IP as well as the email. At least it makes sense. No idea if its right or not.

Yes, I read that thread before I posted, because I couldn't remember if any definitive answer was given.

After skimming through the vBulletin site and documentation, it doesn't seem to be a default software option.

Of course, epepper9's guess is the logical one.

Actually, if you look carefully, you'll see that Doctor Q posted in that thread last night.

Heh...I do my fair share of "****-stirring"

Not intentional, mind you. But knowing that it is a bannable offense....*sets stirrer down and walks away* :)
