I don't see why Technicolor was banned. He/She was mostly arguing with me at the end, but I don't personally feel that he stepped over the mark into direct name-calling. I even admit that he/she had some valid viewpoints to bring to the discussion even if I mostly disagreed with him/her.

I'm not saying anything specific happened, but we don't know all of the details that contributed to the banning. For example, there may have been some back-and-forth between technicolor and the mods via PMs that made it clear that a banning was appropriate. Again, not saying that that happened, but it's an example of an instance in which only the people who decided on the banning know the full story.

It's certainly a possibility. All kinds of things happen that aren't seen. Anything terribly objectionable no longer appears.

It's not as though someone arrives, argues a little, and is banned. Somehow, the situation isn't able to be resolved when a person is banned.

And I think that makes it a community/family if you will.

The mods do a good job keeping order without suppressing the free flow of ideas -- a fine line to walk at times. They do it very well.

They certainly do.

often times you noticed the "banned" moniker during the 24 or 48 hour period it's there and don't notice the time when it's not there. I'm looking into some ways of putting folks in "time out" instead of banning so you'd see that instead. Unfortunately for now, they're the same thing, but with term limits.

Generally speaking, most folks that get a temp boot are aware they did something, get a quick note about why, and the temp ban notice tells them (typically) how long they've got in time out until they're allowed to post again.

Normally a short-term time-out is put in place simply to cool off an escalating argument between two members. It works better than posting "stop it."

I think this dead horse has been beaten enough now...
Mud

(and thanks for the kind words back there. ;))

Mudbug, kudos for the great job you always do. :)

I like the use of "Time Out." Or maybe Penalty Box? :D And also we could throw octopi on the forum right before Expo every year. :)

I like the use of something besides "banned" for those who who have a 24/48 hour period that they cannot post.

Something like "Time Out" or "Penalty Box" sounds good.

Understand your point, but I would suggest that discussion such as this is good once in a while, both for long time members as well as for the newbies.

hopefully not too off topic... I thought that it used to be that Arn was the only "god" and that all admins and mods were just "demi-gods" with a "moderator" tag.

Or have admins always been "gods?"

Arn and Doctor Q have always been 'gods' AFAIK.

How often are the Mods rotated or added. Is there a set cycle and what qualifies one to be worthy of the all powerful scepter.

I believe arn and blakespot are the 2 original gods of MR. ;)

yup.

moderators are different from gods, who can also publish stories, etc... and administer the site itself, and probably a few other differences.

arn is certainly THE god though. the one who can cook a burrito so hot that even he can't eat it. oh wait..

In other words its arn's house we are just renting a guest room.

But Mudbug has been a god for as long as I can remember...

It seems to me it was around the time of WWDC 2003 that he was made Editor and about a year later, when he became a God.
