I don't think you are using the term "bomb" correctly. Just because the 5C was readily in stock, does not make it a bomb. I know more people currently with iPhone 5C than with a Galaxy S5.

"Bomb" has a multiple meanings. He clearly meant "sold quite well," since the 5c sold quite well. Any other meaning would be obviously wrong and therefore inappropriate for this forum.

This is such crap

Nobody complains about a scratched iPhone screen.

This is just nonsense marketing

People don't be fools

I have a ton of scratches on mine. Several people I know also have scratches. I would happily take a sapphire screen just like my watch that I bought because previous glass watches got beat up too bad.

So speak for yourself please.

I hear stuff like that and then I read stiff like this. What’s the truth?

It's how you slice and dice the statistics. On the Android side, there are dozens of models available, from many, competing manufacturers. On the iOS side, it's one company, with just a handful of available models. So, Android can win the platform war, Apple can still win the model war due to the highly-fragmented nature of the Android market.

Yeah, I think that would lead to confusion at the purchase point. I think it’s OK to have variations across models, but not variants within a model line.

i.e.,

This I could see:

4.7”, all variants, all storage capacity, no sapphire
5.5”, all variants, all storage capacity, sapphire

... but not something like:

4.7” 16 and 32GB no sapphire, 64 and 128GB models, sapphire.

Color gamut, mysterious CPU clock changes and PPI aside, the retina iPad vs. Mini was a simple story: 7.9” vs. 9.7”, they’re the same. This is one is bigger, it’s a little heavier, the display is bigger, this one is [you get the point].

you forget though that we already have precedent for apple differentiating the same phone line. the iphone 3G: white was ONLY available for the 16GB, not the 8GB.

No matter what apple dumps out.. people are going to buy!

This is what I personally think...

1. There is not going to be 5.5 inch iPhone.
2. There is no Sapphire display.
3. Protruding camera is true (Based on iPod touch history).

Apart from the size bump (4.7) the phone will be pretty much the same (of course some bump to Camera, Retina density etc etc).

How about Apple starts doing a mid year spec bump? Come spring, as yeild rates improve, interest fades, margins creep up, BOOM, new version. The 4.7" starts with glass then moves to sapphire along with a speed bump and a couple other little goodies. Gets fresh press, smooths out the sales cycle, allows for mark downs on originals.

Frankly, I believe Apple needs to be somewhat careful in pricing this new iPhone 6.

Yes, there is a pent up demand for a larger sized iPhone, but the market has changed a lot as well.

Smartphones are becoming a commodity, just like feature phones were.

There are many Android smartphones that are 'good enough' for many. For the most part, the general public won't care about sapphire but simply want a large screen, decent camera, the popular apps, and texting.

Would Joe Public spend $350 (probably less soon) on a fully capable Nexus 5 or spend $600+ on a 4.7" iPhone 6 with sapphire?

What about CPU pump, Battery pump, RAM pump and Sensor pump? Are those considered your "etc etc"?

No badge because this analysis is nothing new. It's what Apple has been doing since iPhone 4: 4 and 4Siri, 5 and 5Security (Touch ID), now 6 and 6Sapphire.

You’re right, I absolutely forgot about that! Heck, to be totally honest, I don’t even know that I was _aware_ of that now that I think about it :D

However, I wouldn’t call that a precedent, I’d call that more of an outlier, that historically hasn’t repeated itself very much (if at all?).

At least my recollection is that the 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 5S only had color, storage and carrier variants. No changes in materials, features or performance. Every 5C, regardless of color had the same WiFi, same SOC, same plastic, same display spec.

Model lines of course were differentiated: the same “generation cycle” had the 5C and 5S, different SOCs, materials, one had TouchID, etc.

When has Apple ever done a mid-year spec bump on the iPhone?

Apple is considering using sapphire screens in more-expensive models of the two new, larger iPhones it plans to debut this fall

The logical conclusion, based on this article, is that the 5.5" iPhone will be the more expensive high end iPhone, and that the 4.7" iPhone will not.

I wouldn't pay extra for saphire display unless its tons lighter and had smaller bottom bezel/panels.

Those were not MID YEAR nor were they minor spec bumps. Same chassis and not enough for some people but still a bigger change than I am talking about. TouchID yeild was low to start, any new Ax silicon yields improve.

I wonder what percentage of front page MacRumors stories in the last month have used the word "constrained".

How do you come to that conclusion from this article? Per the article:

"Apple is considering using sapphire screens in more-expensive models of the two new, larger iPhones it plans to debut this fall, if it can get enough of the material, people familiar with the matter say. "

It's says two, not one. So wouldn't the conclusion be sapphire will be available on the most expensive model of the 4.7" and 5.5" model?

Sounds fishy. But if everything else is equal, ill gladly pay less for a gorilla glass version. Ill believe it when I see it though.

Please take care of your personal items

Nobody ever asked for a more scratch resistant screen.

What's next ? A even lighter phone and sacrifice even more battery life?!
