Whats the most you guys would pay for a premium phone? I see a lot of people on here complaining all the time. Nickel and Dime.

Personally, if the 5.5 started at 399 and went up to 599....I wouldn't complain. Nor do i think i would complain at entry level 499 pricing if the phone is stacked with high end parts. 2GB, 13MP Camera, Sapphire, etc.

Lmao

The logical conclusion, based on this article, is that the 5.5" iPhone will be the more expensive high end iPhone, and that the 4.7" iPhone will not.
That would make the most sense. If there are 2 sizes,
The 5.5 will be the more expensive with the better specs.

Frankly, I believe Apple needs to be somewhat careful in pricing this new iPhone 6.

Yes, there is a pent up demand for a larger sized iPhone, but the market has changed a lot as well.

Smartphones are becoming a commodity, just like feature phones were.

There are many Android smartphones that are 'good enough' for many. For the most part, the general public won't care about sapphire but simply want a large screen, decent camera, the popular apps, and texting.

Would Joe Public spend $350 (probably less soon) on a fully capable Nexus 5 or spend $600+ on a 4.7" iPhone 6 with sapphire?

Well, considering the leaked specs of the Galaxy Note 4, which it has to be said are stunning, then no the Public will not spend the cost of a Mac desktop on a iPhone, or spend a high amount on a 2 year contract. They will get a Note 4 for half the cost, or keep their current iPhone or get the cheaper ones.

How about Apple starts doing a mid year spec bump? Come spring, as yeild rates improve, interest fades, margins creep up, BOOM, new version. The 4.7" starts with glass then moves to sapphire along with a speed bump and a couple other little goodies. Gets fresh press, smooths out the sales cycle, allows for mark downs on originals.

Can I get my analyst badge?

They discount the phones throughout the year through their retail channels. Margins don't really creep up due to this fact yet sales are still solid all the way through the year.

If you start doing mid cycle upgrades/updates then you lose the launch hype each year. Who wants to stand in line in Sept only to have their phone lose its allure 6 months later? No one. So this idea will never happen. No analyst badge for you!!

No, it didn't do as well as Apple projected it to do. When a company (and Apple did during its 2014 Q1 conference call) says it expected better sales it's admitting its was dud -- primarily because it was overpriced at just $100 less than the full featured 5S. The 5C recovered a bit because retailers put it on a fire sale, but at the MSRP it's a dud.

Far more people bought the 5s than expected. That's called up-selling and good for Apple. The 5c itself sold more units than the 4s it replaced at that price slot, and the phone was at MRSP when that was reported. Duds don't sell more than their predecessors, unless the predecessor was also a dud (which the 4s wasn't).

The reporting on the whole situation was idiotic. Apple sold more 5s than expected and more 5s+5c than expected, yet everyone focused on Apple selling fewer 5c than expected. Only with Apple will people try to paint customers walking into a store and spending $30 instead of $20 as a bad thing.

The only bad part for Apple was that it took a while to get their production lines balanced to match the demand ratio. Which probably resulted in some lost 5s sales.

"Apple may also charge more for the high-end versions of the devices."

This week's winner of the "stupidly obvious statement" award!

There are a lot of parallels between the smartphone and auto markets. Plenty of people will buy commodity cars (Kias, Toyota Corollas, Ford Focuses, etc) yet luxury automakers who sell far fewer cars reap immense profits from the market.

People buy iPhones because Apple has become the only luxury brand in the smartphone space. Plus it offers some amazing software, hardware, and integration with other Apple products that, together, competitors simply cannot beat. Joe Public can buy a Nexus 5 but they don't get that BMW/Lexus/Mercedes luxury experience. They'll get the luxury Hyundai experience (yes this company does try to compete against these automakers). They could also save even more money and buy a Xiaomi or lower end Samsung but then they'd be getting a Kia experience.

These good enough Android phones have existed in the marketplace for a few years now yet Apple's iPhone sales continue to increase year over year. People want the iPhone, plain and simple.

I think we'll see sapphire composite (as seen in MKBHD video) in the 4.7-inch model and pure sapphire in the 5.5-inch.

We've already heard there may be shortages with the 5.5-inch, so naturally it makes sense since sapphire will be limited as well.

Please take care of your personal items

Nobody ever asked for a more scratch resistant screen.

What's next ? A even lighter phone and sacrifice even more battery life?!

my Iphone is a tool and i dont have time to baby it.

so yes there are people that would like scratch resistant and not spend money on those stupid screen protectors.

I am happy with the thickness of the 5 if they put more battery in there thinness doesn't matter so much to me it's thin enough.

You mean you messed everyone selling it for $99 to get rid of the damn things?

You mean when the 5c was the number two selling phone, next to the number one 5s? For more than 6 months? Maybe they were a little too successful at getting "rid of the damn things."

"...Apple may also charge more for the high-end versions of the devices."

What is new about that?! Hasn't that ALWAYS been the case?! High-end = higher price = business as usual.

There is nothing luxurious about Apple or iPhone. Quite the opposite, as the best selling smartphone, it is the ultimate "me too" product available in this space.

It did unfortunately.

Even Tim Cook admitted it.

No it didn't:

Cook also addressed the launch of the iPhone 5c and 5s, noting that the two phones both outsold Apple's previous products in the middle tier and the high end, a moderate rebuke of reports that have insisted that the iPhone 5c is a "failure" for not having sold even better than it did. He called particular attention to Touch ID, stating that it has been "incredibly well received."

You’re right, I absolutely forgot about that! Heck, to be totally honest, I don’t even know that I was _aware_ of that now that I think about it :D

However, I wouldn’t call that a precedent, I’d call that more of an outlier, that historically hasn’t repeated itself very much (if at all?).

At least my recollection is that the 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 5S only had color, storage and carrier variants. No changes in materials, features or performance. Every 5C, regardless of color had the same WiFi, same SOC, same plastic, same display spec.

Model lines of course were differentiated: the same “generation cycle” had the 5C and 5S, different SOCs, materials, one had TouchID, etc.

in terms of iphone, yes an outlier, and let's hope it remains that. although sapphire on the high end version of both the 4.7 and 5.5 is WAY better than ming cho's prediction of sapphire on just the 5.5 - i REALLY hope apple doesn't load the 5.5 with better specs all around.

i want the best, but i have no desire for a 5.5" phone (as i'm sure a lot of people feel) and it will be super disappointing if i have to get a 4.7" phone that is lesser in terms of specs/display/etc

Apple has plans to use a sapphire crystal display in the higher-end models of the two versions of the iPhone 6 that it plans to debut this fall, reports The Wall Street Journal. Because of the higher cost of sapphire, Apple may also charge more for the high-end versions of the devices.Multiple iPhone 6 rumors have speculated that sapphire could be constrained to either the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 or the higher-end models due to cost and production issues, but The Wall Street Journal is the first mainstream publication to confirm those rumors.

If Apple is only planning to use sapphire in the higher-end models of the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6, that could explain why a sandpaper test on a leaked iPhone 6 front panel revealed that it was not made of pure sapphire.

Apple is investing a considerable amount of money into partner GT Advanced's sapphire plant, shelling out more than $500 million to outfit the factory with high-output furnaces for sapphire production. Rumors have suggested GT Advanced has the capability to eventually produce enough sapphire to outfit 100 to 200 million iPhones, but other rumors have pointed towards high costs and production problems as limiting factors. Apple is also planning to use sapphire for the upcoming iWatch, according to The Wall Street Journal. The first sapphire displays for the two devices are "expected to roll off production lines this month."

Sapphire is seen as a desirable material due to its extreme durability and scratch resistance, but many smartphone manufacturers have suggested Apple's plan to use the material is just a marketing gimmick due to its prohibitive cost.

While Apple may not be able to produce the entire lineup of iPhone 6 displays in sapphire, rumors have suggested that when the factory is fully functional, it will give the company a way to produce massive quantities of sapphire at a low cost, which means a full sapphire lineup could be more feasible for future devices.

I just cant believe how people get so caught up with the mobile phones in general. I like to have a nice spec'd phone but my life is not going to resolve around it. There are other priorities besides a phone. Geeeez.

"Apple is considering using sapphire screens in more-expensive models of the two new, larger iPhones it plans to debut this fall, if it can get enough of the material, people familiar with the matter say."

hate to tell them this, but apple would have had to "consider" this a long time ago.

the phones are in production and will be on boats soon. they are not "considering" anything now.

Kinda makes me quite glad I'm happy with my 4" screened 5S..
I don't need a bigger phone, I don't think I need a sapphire screen, I have a good camera, and my 5S is super fast and will serve me well for a long time to come.

Actually, no. iPhone sales disappointed Wall Street. AAPL took a big hit even though Apple reported better than expected earnings. AAPL did not recover until April when the stock split was announced.

All those rumors = False

They will launch 2 Models. iPhone Mini ( an updated iPhone 5s with a little specs bumps and a little tweaks in battery) and iPhone Air 4.7. You will see and confirm this info in September.

What is luxurious? The plastic S5? Does it still have that eye tracking gimmick on it or did they leave that "amazing feature" out this year?

So if the 4.7" got sapphire and the 5.5" didn't would all the phablet lovers just "suck it up" and not complain? It's easy for people who are getting what they want to tell others to "suck it up". ;)

I want a 5.5 and I don't give a rat's backside if it has sapphire or gorilla glass 3. That's a fact, I don't see why people are whining, especially before any of it is even fact.

I said something similar to this a few pages back. That being said I don't think it will get a spec bump. And the 5.5 is coming so you have to have a name for that as well. Two iPhone Airs won't cut it.

Apple iPhone is not a luxury. lol

They are just as much as android phones
