I see exactly what you see, but I do not interpret the darker area on the tape as evidence of a hole beneath it. They would not put a port so far forward, and everything had been accounted for already. I definitely think it is nothing more than a piece of tape.

I think someone already pointed this out but on the underside photo there is clearly some sort of hole in the same place as the tape that appears to be covering a hole.

It's a weird place to put a port. Perhaps they had an empty space there so they added a SD card slot? It doesn't look quite wide enough for SD but maybe it's Sony Memory Stick? (why?!!?) It looks about the same size as eSATA, but again, it's a silly place for that.

Couldn't HDMI be routed through the micro-DVI port?

mystery port

You can see the outline of where the punched hole has been finished and the table through the tape. Whether it is an I/O port or not, there's definitely a hole. Look again.

could it be a sata?/esata port this could connect hard drives and raids etc...looks the same size and shape.

no dvi? no firewire? lower price?
could all this be outsourced to something like a docking station aka the brick?
and the little unknown port is the connector to this brick?
just speculating :D

Just like my current Sony! Docking station is a good idea...All the ports you need and all the portability aswell. You don't need a HDMI port or 5 USB's for example when on the train.

The next generation of midi control runs of ethernet eg. The lemux/dexter by jazzmutant...not sure about getting rid of this. Apple better not screw over music producers especially since they forced many to go mac by buying logic. TI firewire please.

I am very much liking all these semi-solid rumours trickling out. Can't wait for a new MB. Didn't like the plastic much so I stuck with my PowerBook. Byebye Powerbook

ok thanks guys for the responses. I wasn't sure if that was the ethernet symbol, that's why I asked. It would have been an interesting idea if they had done what I said but Im sure there would have been a lot of complaining due to the fact it wouldn't have had an ethernet port. Anyway, we will all see if these are or maybe as someone said, fakes that apple has made to deceive us! hehehe hopefully.;)

Battery latch?

That definitely makes sense, although AppleInsider did seem to indicate that this would be on the bottom (for the MBP at least).

But why would Apple put a battery latch on the side of the case, rather than the bottom?

What about a slot for a SIM Card and then we get a built in 3G HSDPA/HSUPA modem!!

Or am I dreaming!!

The Toshiba Qosimo X305 has a port that is both eSATA and USB. Both can be plugged into this one port without an adapter. Apple needs to implement this.

But not the three-inch-thickness for which the Qosimos are known.

Would be very sad if the MB wouldn't have any FW port.
Very very very sad.
Apple isn't Apple without FW.
And I think they're going to lose customers on this.
Hopefully they will use the Ethernet-FW thing, but then they must give it for free, otherwhise it's just a big rip off!

If you zoom right in, though pixelised. You can see a bevelled edge*. It looks exactly like displayport (as I said earlier, then someone else said).

The placement is just so odd though. And to have one monitor port in a logical place, and one down that end is so weird. It has to be either:
1. Displayport
2. A card slot
3. A latch

*Edit. The angled part is either upside down, or distorted by the tape and not there at all. This is so frustrating. Why do some kids have to spoil christmas? :p

My wife just told me from the other room to shut down the porn sites :D

This looks awesome... but I must resist... i will not give in to it... yeah... for sure. :apple:

I think that the new macbook might become my first Apple computer ^^

I'll see the spec and then I'll decide :p

Butit looks so much better for picture/movie editing and creating that I think I might do the jump into the apple world...

well, I dont see an angled edge...but I don't think its a latch.

why do people moan about chicklet keys, I think they are great and look awesome. Bring on the chicklet!!!

I have no problems with Apple's Hardware. What about some higher quality Software instead...

when it's on the side, you have to move whatever is on your desk next to it to access the drive, when it's on the front, it is considerably more convenient.

What specifically aggravates me about this should it be true is that they are willing to compromise on details like this just for an extra .1" reduction in thickness. I sometimes think apple puts far too much emphasis on thinness at the expense of functionality.

Except that some people prefer it on the side. And they also get the .1" reduction in thickness, so it's a win-win.

I feel for you front-side slot-loaders, though. Honestly. :)

If Apple managed to somehow make a port that is both FW and USB it'd be even better.

This covered port is on MBP, but not on MB... so if it is battery latch, it'd have to be somewhere else on MB (or no removable battery there). I think it's more likely sign of some Pro-only feature.
