Which (FW400, FW800) and how many Firewire ports on MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air?

but there's no firewire on the Macbook ? Only the Maccrook Pro ? Yay for having to spend an extra $1000 for a feature that a $50 laptop would have. Apple are a bunch of crooks. Or they want everyone to buy their special apple converters for $250 a pop or something ?

stop making up stuff for the sake of supporting your argument.

let me put it to you that way; a macbook is the budget Apple laptop. It has always been. This means that the primary reason why you would get a macbook instead of a pro is price. And when price is the main concern, consumers are willing to give a way less-frequently used features as long as he/she can get most common tasks done with said laptop.

I have had my G4 powerbook since May 2005 and have used "both" FW800 and the DVD drive only a handful of times. And neither times were "necessary".

indeed a strange connection (5th from left)

I think what's most likely, is that since they had to get rid of the large DVi connector due to space constraints, and since the mini DVi does not have enough functionality, they have simply created another proprietary connector for an adapter that they will *hopefully* bundle with the MBP. It's a full fledged DVi then, just with another form factor.

Whatever Apple releases, I will likely buy a MBP. My Alu Powerbook has served me well for well over 4 years now, and considering my usage of it, I will need FW ports, the 800 AND the 400, unless they provide an adapter with the machine to turn the FW 800 into two 400's, but 2 800 would be better, I have a FW800 external HD, and a FW400 audio interface, that both need to be connected at the same time...

For the rest, what ever is released, is never going to be ugly, or bad quality, knowing Apple, it will be a fantastic machine! :apple:

I am in the exact same predicament...I need both and if they do go to only one FW port I'll probably hang on to the last model as long as possible (GPU willing). What will you do if there's only one port? If there is an adapter that turns the 800 into 2 400s how will that affect external FW800 drives? Kinda suck to be running those at 400 for audio.

I don't have a good feeling about this at all...but can only hope they have ONE model that has 2 FW ports.

Hard drives yes but not so sure about audio interfaces. That just sounds like trouble to me.

Yes, you CAN chain audio interfaces. Most of them have 2 FW ports for that.

But, if you can afford a MBP you'll at least have a FW port!
I can't afford a MBP and I need FW too, so I'm screwed !

I'm sorry but you obviously don't do amateur videos of family get togethers do you? Or send videos of your kids to other family members? I would like to think that I don't need a MBP for this, nor would I think I should get a new video camera just to do this when I got mine from the Apple website less than 2 years ago and only uses FW to export video. This is a MacBook, not a MacBook Air, it should come with at least one FW 400 port. Now I'm not completely convinced the new MBs will not have FW 400, but your argument has holes in it.

Here's my little analysis:

the display connector label (vertical line, rounded square, vertical line) is clearly visible, so this port is therre to connect an external display device. It's the shape of the mini DVI but smaller. The Macbook Air's micro DVI looks more like a standard USB connector. So why didn't they use the normal micro DVI? Maybe this thing is a dual link port so it can drive 30" displays.

EDIT: sorry for the "realease" typo.

Then I loaned it around to over two dozen people at work and they could only stand using it for 1 hour at most.

Oh right... you just loaned your computer to 2 dozen people? Sounds feasible.

I've owned a couple of Powerbooks, an MBP and two Macbooks. Can't say I have a huge preference but the Macbook style keyboard is no problem. Nobody I know has a problem with it either... but then I don't loan my Macbook to two dozen people.

It seems the only option really - must be something Apple made. Now we might start to wonder whether it's yet another DVI (micro dual link as someone said), or maybe mini Display Port? There's no mini Display Port as far as I know, so it's one of the few ports without mini version, and Apple can't have it, can they? ;)

I think he loaned the standalone Apple keyboard.

nobody answers me!!!!:(

if the big case is a MBP then we have a MBP with no ports ,USB or other,on the right side...

do you like this decision?

Depends, are they coming out with a docking station for it?

(Sorry to answer your question with a question but I'm not going to make any decisions till we have all the info. on Tues.)

lol I think everyone thinks that which is why some are saying the "Pro" is actually a bigger MB

I pray to Jobs you're right. I was thinking the exact same thing. This doesn't wow me at all, in fact I'll stick w/ the current model over that toy thats exciting some Kool-Aid drinkers. I definitely NEED 2 FireWire ports for my system and have no interest in fudging a solution to upgrade my machine. If they have 2 ports I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

I don't think we've seen the Pro yet, it might be a 15" MacBook. The word is there will be 12 levels in the notebook lines so its entirely possible there could still be a pimped out 15" coming. I have no interest in going to a 17" one either so I hope thats not the only one w/ multiple FW.

Mmm... An apple dock station. Sounds unlikely to me. I'd rather have all the ports I need on the laptop than have to dock it all the time.
