I have no idea! But there are several 16:9 fans in these forums
I guess some people are beyond the realm of human reasoning.
the only advantage is dual link (to full sized)
That's a pretty serious advantage, single-link DVI can only drive displays up to ~1920*1200 (24"-27") and Apple sells 30" screen which require dual-link.
HDMI won't be on any of the laptops till it is on the displays (probably not till at least MWSF 09).
No reason for that wait, HDMI types A and C can be adapted to single-link DVI and type B can be adapted to dual-link DVI, they're electrically compatible and all, Apple could just use HDMI or DisplayPort and ship an adapter with the 'books.
I thought you needed full-sized DVI for dual-link to power the 30-inch Cinema Display?
You do, or something that can be adapted to dual-link DVI (HDMI type B for instance)

FireWire?

Here's my little analysis:

the display connector label (vertical line, rounded square, vertical line) is clearly visible, so this port is therre to connect an external display device. It's the shape of the mini DVI but smaller. The Macbook Air's micro DVI looks more like a standard USB connector. So why didn't they use the normal micro DVI? Maybe this thing is a dual link port so it can drive 30" displays.

EDIT: sorry for the "realease" typo.

Thanks for the visual. I'd like to throw some more doubt into the posted photos as a final Apple product. Building on the other posts with drawings from the patent office, it appears that Firewire will not be dropped from the docking station (could this be the real brick?). Take a look at the part of the drawing that is labeled "124." Looks an awful lot like a firewire port on the DVD slot side of the MB. Also, to me this drawing explains why they moved the Kensington port to the right side of the MB.

On another patent drawing without the MB in the docking station, there is a port in the docking station that allows dock to communicate with the MB. Could this be the opening in the MB photos with the tape over near the front left side? Makes sense if you read the text of the patent (search for "122" in the text):

In the example shown, connector 122 connects to one or more connecting ports on the docking connection side of portable computer 112. In some embodiments, the one or more connection ports of portable computer 112 are a subset of ports on the docking connection side of portable computer 112. The one or more connection ports of portable computer 112 may either be a proprietary port for coupling with the docking station or a port that can be used for other purposes besides coupling with a docking station (e.g., a standard external monitor port and a standard power port used to couple the portable computer with the docking station as well as used to connect other external devices). In some embodiments, connector 122 is associated with the coupling interface described previously. Connector 122 is lined up the one or more ports of portable computer 112 so that they automatically engage when portable computer 112 is docked. In some embodiments, connector 122 magnetically engages with the portable computer port(s). In some embodiments, connector 122 is optional (e.g., wireless coupling).

personally, I would rather allow apple the ability to keep this secret until the notebook event to announce.

kinda sucks to have the design spoiled.

I understand the need to try and figure out of there will be some new technology, ie graphics chips or blu-ray.

but at some point the rumors are a bit much. why spoil the surprise. i don't mind waiting on the design part.

Makes sense for Apple to include HDMI on the new MBP now for the launch of new HDMI-equipped Cinema Displays at MWSF '09.

True with the current system - my wrong... I agree that if apple decide to release HDMI displays at MWSF 09 then it would make sense for them to release HDMI laptops now, but (1) What's with the placement on the case, lack of a hole from the inside? (2) Why not just release a slight refresh in Feb/March so that all the maniacs who just bought a new MBP now have to go get a HDMI one in 6 months when the next update is? and (3) What if the weird port is "mini-HDMI"?

I wasn't aware of what Display Port is, and looking into wikipedia, it doesn't list :apple: as a supporter:

Supporters
There are several companies stated to support DisplayPort: AMD, Analogix, ASRock, ASUSTeK,Dell, Genesis Microchip, Hewlett-Packard, Hosiden Corporation, Intel, Integrated Device Technology, JAE, Lenovo, Luxtera, Molex, NVIDIA, NXP Semiconductors, Palit Microsystems Palit, Parade Technologies, Philips, Quantum Data, Samsung, Sparkle, Texas Instruments, and Tyco Electronics.

Why :apple: would be supporting it? Because NIVIDA ?

And the post making reference to the inside look of the taped port makes a lot of sense.

Does the MBP case's additional structural support for the trackpad lead to additional evidence for a glass trackpad with a cisual output option, ike on the iPod Touch?

Anyone remember this patent?

All the port are now on the left side of the MacBook's according to this article...

Coincidence?

I'd love it to be true!

How about merging this idea with ACD and The new TV Rumor :D

Cool, but not happening probably, though I wouldn't put it past them.

Also, no more latch on front (or anything for that matter ... easy, smooth slide-in) and optical drive on right side for use while in the base (TV-monitor) unit. Seems to makes sense and that Apple is moving in that direction.

And the "secret" covered port could be the new port that allows it to connect to the new base perhaps ???

For instance, or because it's pretty much the step up from HDMI, which is the step up from DVI, and you can convert down to HDMI or DVI from DisplayPort.
sliding your macbook into the computer would never happen. think of all the problems that come with that.

moving on...

Dropping your book while sliding it in, and having to buy a new one?

That's a problem... how? (from apple's POV I mean)

Indeed, not to mention that there is no point.
So funny when a rumour comes out, the comments/ideas people get go off at strange tangents and suddenly all things seem possible to some...

this pics are of MacBook. It is not MAcBook pro. This ports are for normal people not for proffesionals.Professional need eSata (Acer has), Express Card and Fw800 or 3200.This is MacBook on pics.

Why are you participating in these forums then if you want less spoilers? Simply want some but not too many? :)

If Apple decides to do a small refresh to update to HDMI or DisplayPort within 6 months, they can go screw themselves...

they have that silver gloss look that my hp has.i like it cause it doesnt leave palm marks no matter how long youve had it,unlike the pastic that wears away. now all they need is some material for the keys,so they dont get that glossy look over the long period of time
