Well now it begins to be clear why Oppenheimer expected lower profit. These machines don't have Firewire, eSATA, or DisplayPort so there is a huge cross section of users refusing to buy the new machines.

Can't wait for Tuesday. Hoping there will be more than the notebooks, but either way don't think I am going to be disappointed!

so what do you think the prices will be, ranging from 800-3100?, 12price points, will they stick to the plastic ones?

This seems to put the rumors of a "glass" trackpad to rest. The size of those in the photos looks to be about the same size as the Macbook Air trackpad.
not really... compared to my 15inch mbp the trackpad is about same-sized... looks just bigger at the 13inch macbook ;)

all in all there are just very few changes for the mbp ... except the keyboard of course... all connectors on one side might be a disadvantage though...

i'm liking the docking possibilities

display out looks like trimmed down micro-dvi? could it work in conjunction with usb for 30" cinema displays?

what is the taped up hole on mbp? someone identified round hole next to it as probably the IR. too wide and wrong place for esata? pros wouldn't want pop-out remote?...

Perhaps the new hole is is for a plug-in WiMax receiver/antenna for better reception (outside the casing ... since there have been so many complaints regarding reception through aluminum casings). Just a thought, albeit a completely uneducated one. :D

If the apple stores have them in stock, will they wait until the event has announced the new macbooks until they start selling them, or will the sell them as soon as they open? This is in the UK btw, so we are like 6 hours ahead lol.

Intriguing.

For a start, what on earth are the two circular holes towards the front of both of the machines? It's about the size of the headphone/microphone jacks, but obviously they're not... and they seem to be unmarked. Any thoughts?

Also, from the previously linked article from Wikipedia about Firewire:

In December 2007, the 1394 Trade Association announced that products will be available before the end of 2008 using the S1600 and S3200 modes that, for the most part, had already been defined in 1394b. The 1.6 Gbit/s and 3.2 Gbit/s devices will use the same 9-pin connectors as the existing FireWire 800 and will be fully compatible with existing S400 and S800 devices. It will compete with the forthcoming USB 3.0.

Could we be seeing Firewire 3200 on the new MacBook Pro?

Nope, connector would be the wrong way round. Also, on other pics it doesn't look as if it was narrowing down on one side. It looks like a smaller version of the MiniDVI (NOT a micro DVI, though. As I've said before, I'm certain it is a new connector that has dual link capabilities and comes with an adapter).

I read the first 12 pages or so of this thread... Am I the only one who's going to miss the white plastic that has served Apple so well for, ah, 7 years?

RIP white polycarbonate casing, you were much, much more loved than brushed metal or the pinstripes.

Tuesday's event starts at 6pm UK time, and will probably end at roughly 7pm. With most Apple Retail Stores closing at 9pm, it's unlikely they'll stock them on Tuesday. Assuming the laptops will be available on the day of the event, the UK stores are more likely to stock them starting on Wednesday (although it is fully possible these laptops will be "coming in November").

Steve Jobs will say when they are available. i.e. they will NOT be available for purchase before the event.

Precisely my concern. I have already booked a personal shopper on wednesday for this. I hope there is enough stock..although I don't think they will be queuing out the door for these though.

Just in case they are...hands off my MBP!! My nearest store is in Sheffield, what about you?

I can never resist a little detour into the store when I am nearby...drives my GF crazy. I mean...it's not like she drags me round loads of shoe shops is it ;)

Don't know if this was said already, cause I skipped to the end...
With that other rumor of 12 price points it would be hard not to go up to more models, plus a 3100 price point? Sounds like a better high end pro, not a compromise.

That's a pretty serious advantage, single-link DVI can only drive displays up to ~1920*1200 (24"-27") and Apple sells 30" screen which require dual-link.

No reason for that wait, HDMI types A and C can be adapted to single-link DVI and type B can be adapted to dual-link DVI, they're electrically compatible and all, Apple could just use HDMI or DisplayPort and ship an adapter with the 'books.

You do, or something that can be adapted to dual-link DVI (HDMI type B for instance)

I don't know how it is with HDMI-DVI adapters, but HDMI type A supports up to 2560x1600 resolution, type B up to 3840x2400. So I think A would be enough, unless it won't work with dual-link DVI and single-link DVI would limit it to 1920x1200?

Thanks for the visual. I'd like to throw some more doubt into the posted photos as a final Apple product. Building on the other posts with drawings from the patent office, it appears that Firewire will not be dropped from the docking station (could this be the real brick?). Take a look at the part of the drawing that is labeled "124." Looks an awful lot like a firewire port on the DVD slot side of the MB. Also, to me this drawing explains why they moved the Kensington port to the right side of the MB.

On another patent drawing without the MB in the docking station, there is a port in the docking station that allows dock to communicate with the MB. Could this be the opening in the MB photos with the tape over near the front left side? Makes sense if you read the text of the patent (search for "122" in the text):

In the example shown, connector 122 connects to one or more connecting ports on the docking connection side of portable computer 112. In some embodiments, the one or more connection ports of portable computer 112 are a subset of ports on the docking connection side of portable computer 112. The one or more connection ports of portable computer 112 may either be a proprietary port for coupling with the docking station or a port that can be used for other purposes besides coupling with a docking station (e.g., a standard external monitor port and a standard power port used to couple the portable computer with the docking station as well as used to connect other external devices). In some embodiments, connector 122 is associated with the coupling interface described previously. Connector 122 is lined up the one or more ports of portable computer 112 so that they automatically engage when portable computer 112 is docked. In some embodiments, connector 122 magnetically engages with the portable computer port(s). In some embodiments, connector 122 is optional (e.g., wireless coupling).

That's a good idea IMO. Or at least it goes well with my own idea that whatever this taped hole is, it would be some feature only for Pro line. So I like your guess ;).

True with the current system - my wrong... I agree that if apple decide to release HDMI displays at MWSF 09 then it would make sense for them to release HDMI laptops now, but (1) What's with the placement on the case, lack of a hole from the inside? (2) Why not just release a slight refresh in Feb/March so that all the maniacs who just bought a new MBP now have to go get a HDMI one in 6 months when the next update is? and (3) What if the weird port is "mini-HDMI"?

Isn't HDMI type C sometimes called "mini HDMI"?

I wasn't aware of what Display Port is, and looking into wikipedia, it doesn't list :apple: as a supporter:

Supporters
There are several companies stated to support DisplayPort: AMD, Analogix, ASRock, ASUSTeK,Dell, Genesis Microchip, Hewlett-Packard, Hosiden Corporation, Intel, Integrated Device Technology, JAE, Lenovo, Luxtera, Molex, NVIDIA, NXP Semiconductors, Palit Microsystems Palit, Parade Technologies, Philips, Quantum Data, Samsung, Sparkle, Texas Instruments, and Tyco Electronics.

Why :apple: would be supporting it? Because NIVIDA ?

And the post making reference to the inside look of the taped port makes a lot of sense.

Apple doesn't support HDMI either. I think Display Port is likely to appear in Macs at some point.

Does the MBP case's additional structural support for the trackpad lead to additional evidence for a glass trackpad with a cisual output option, ike on the iPod Touch?

Look at the pictures of inside cases. They both have this metal thing under the keyboard. I suppose it's not above the trackpad in MB just because of the smaller form factor.

You get pretty much all the capabilities of full size DVI in micro/mini DVI - the only advantage is dual link (to full sized) and size (mini/micro). There is no lost quality. If there is no reason for full sized DVI, then there's no need for DVI, full stop.

HDMI won't be on any of the laptops till it is on the displays (probably not till at least MWSF 09). I don't know why they don't hurry up and just do it...

No you don't, you lose audio dude. Which makes it completely useless because all TV's when set to receiving HDMI input cannot simultaneously use another input such as a composite in which would be needed to input analog audio by using the output from the Mac. DVI is not a solution for TV connectivity. The best way is DisplayPort. It's the native interface internally, it outputs high bandwidth audio/video and also does the HDCP stuff so its HDMI capable as well. Besides that the future of external LCD's for computers will be DisplayPort not HDMI nor DVI.

I really can not believe that Apple will drop firewire on the Macbook. If they do, I believe that will be an incredibly bad move on Apple's part.

After all one of their target audiences for the Macbook are all the families out there that have firewire camcorders that want iMovie for making their home movies.

There are an awful lot of firewire camcorders out there still. It'll be a long time before the general population has moved to HD camcorders with their USB connections.....

With the rumor of multiple price points, in theory the entry level MB could have no FireWire (cheaper) and the mid-level and up could have FireWire. The photos could only be showing the casing for the entry level. Wishful thinking.

Indeed, not to mention that there is no point.
It's a dock (which many people long for) with an integrated screen (= you don't have to buy a new one) and an iMac-type very low desk footprint (= awesome).

Looks like there are 3 points to it.
Concerning the missing FireWire port on the MacBook case...

Could Apple go this route? Would that be feasible?
there are no products or chipsets which include this capability.
Depends on the ability of the MCP, or Apple's capacity to find a third-party chip able to do that.

So feasible yes, probability... fairly low really (even though it would be awesome, esp. because I need firewire and don't want to bump to an MBP)
I read the first 12 pages or so of this thread... Am I the only one who's going to miss the white plastic that has served Apple so well for, ah, 7 years?
Seeing the little cracks all around my macbook (not the front armrest one -- although I did get it in the past -- but numerous hairline cracks on the left and back sides), as far as I'm concerned good riddance to the white plastic, welcome to full aluminium.
