While I would like to have Firewire too (so I do sympathize with the Firewire supporters), I really don't see anything to discuss on this point. The port in the leaked photos is the shape of a Ethernet port, and the size of an Ethernet port, and as far as I can make out, it has the same logo beside it as the Ethernet port on my Powerbook has. Ever heard of the saying "if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck..." ?

The best we can hope for is that it is a dual use Ethernet + Firewire port. If :apple: was really dropping Ethernet and keeping Firewire, there is no way they would keep a Firewire port that looks just like an Ethernet port instead of keeping a regular Firewire port.

It's not as if I believe the poll will actually change anything. But it doesn't hurt to show how important many people believe FireWire to be. Also, the best thing would be to have both, that goes without saying. Poll still open by the way... Maybe we could send the link to Steve ;-)

Brilliant work, Apple. Take off DVI, forcing professionals to use a dongle to get any sort of video output from their machine

Iddddddddiots.

Not sure what the problem would be here? Surely if you hooked your MacBook Pro up to the same display you would simply leave the dongle attaced to that display's cable.

Admittedly it could prove a pain if you travel with your MBP and plug it into various displays, but it's a small adapter and will take up very little space.

Most notebooks will require the carrying of a video adapter in that scenario anyway - either changing DVI to VGA or vice-versa because you never know what environment you're going in to.

Yes a straightforward DVI connection is more convenient but assuming there's no lost functionality then it's not a deal-breaker. At least not for me.

Is there any chance that there will be ports on the back side of the case...toward the left and right side?

Have we even seen the back?

Also, what's the deal with that MBA case picture?? Is that real? What's going on? Link?

and do you want your apple logo to illuminate 5x brighter too?

He'd like his Apple logo to blind those who are not worthy.

Well said ThunderRobot, I used to have to bring my display adapter every time I wanted to make a presentation outside of my home on my PowerBook. I really don't see the big deal. My PowerBook came with the adapter.

No firewire on the new MacBooks thats stupid. I still use some firewire stuff all the new things I buy are 95% usb but still they clearly have room for it on the case.

they do have firewire, they said that on the leak photo site

Some MacBooks have black keys now and dont have any backlighting

It's just indicative of Apple's disdain for the existence of standards that they didn't invent. There's no logical reason to not use a standard DVI port… it's not like the machines are small and they need to save the space. In typical Apple fashion, they probably won't include any of the adapters, either.

As a 'pro', I have a black MacBook and I have 2 DVI adapters, 1 for work and 1 for home/travel. I'd rather have a smaller footprint and all the ports I want than loose a port to a full-size DVI connection.

Plus, many of my co-workers with MBPs need a DVI-to-VGA adapter to connect to projectors, older monitors, etc, so really, it's moot. Even with a full DVI port, you may need an adapter.

As for DVI to VGA, yes, that requires an adapter. However, DVI is at least a standard so you're just going from one standard to another. I could even deal with having to use DisplayPort-> DVI or DisplayPort -> VGA. It's the fact that Apple uses their own stupid little ports that drives me berserk.

That is not a good set of specs. The rumour said about 12 different SKU's, that's more like 15 different SKU's.

Here's what I think:

2 13.3" MB (starting at $799, although this COULD conceivably be 14.4" or so as well)
2 15.4" MB (starting at $899)
2 15.4" MBP (starting at $1099)
2 17.1" MBP (starting at $1299)
2 13.3" MBA (starting at $1599)
2 15.4" MBA (starting at $1799)

With the MBAs, a 128GB SSD BTO option drags the price up to $3100 or so, that would explain the $3100 high-end price tag. Most SSDs are expensive still.

BJ

Have you ever heard of an ordered list? ;)

I don't think so.

3 MB - 13.3, 15.4, 17.1
3 MBP - 14.4, 16.1, 18.1

Full 1080p in the MBP, all LED backlit displays.
I hope the NVIDIA rumors for MBs are true.
Again, those photos don't look like a massive change from the current design. I would like to see something more cool like Sony's current offerings w/ TT, FW, AW or something that blows all that away!

Taking FireWire off of the MacBooks would be one of the stupidest things I can imagine.
Yeah I'd hate it. Then again, there has been the suggestion that maybe, just maybe, Apple decided to use FW-S800T. While I haven't found mention of it anywhere in the articles on the MCP79, this would kinda work out: use the rj45 port either as FW (when you need to do acquisition/data transfert) or as eth (when you have to connect to the network). Clearly not the best thing ever, but it would give FW800 to the macbook. I'd be happy with that solution.

Losing FW altogether on the other hand... ugh
"Uh, no. You can't edit movies on this machine. If you want to hook up your $200 digital video camera, you'll need to upgrade to the MacBook Pro"
Don't most dv cams output to USB nowadays?
It's MCP79 series, MCP7A is for desktops :).
Yeah sorry about that I kinda lost myself in the designations :)

2 15.4" MBA (starting at $1799)
$1300 for 17" macbook pros.

Which currently start out at $2,799

Would you be offended if I told you you're completely off your rocker?
they do have firewire, they said that on the leak photo site

Source please, because unless it's FW-S800T there is no firewire port on the macbook case displayed in this thread

Man I remember back when I first joined, you didn't know anything until the day it was announced. I wonder why it's gotten so crazy with leaks now?

They did include adapters (to VGA and DVI) with MacBook Air which uses micro-DVI.

So if Apple uses mini-DisplayPort instead of a regular one you'll have a problem with it, while regular DisplayPort would be fine?

Just because YOU may not want (need?) an adapter, I'd be willing to bet that many of us who use external displays will even if Apple uses a standard port.

Instead of a mini-DVI port, would an S-Video port make you happy?

Yeah, so am I. People can see my MacBook Pro now and know that I spent more for a better machine just by glancing at it, instead of having to come over and ask, "Is that a MacBook or a MacBook Pro?" I like my computer to be easily differentiated from a lesser machine.

 makes me really angry

Full 1080p in the MBP
No. 1080p is a TV resolution (it's 16/9, not 16/10), and 17" already has above 1080p as an option (1920*1200).

Now they could make 1920*1200 the base/standard 17" resolution instead of a $100 option (and maybe add it as an option to the 15"/16" MBP as well, given that there have been 1920*1200 15" laptops for years), but definitely not 1080p, that's nonsensical.

"Ports-on-the-back" is a design idea from 1995. We're not doing that again.
Actually, I think it's a pretty good idea. Really.
But that is quite impossible if the notebook is supposed to be thin and come with a small foot print at the same time.
