If the iMac Dock rumor is true then my money is on a DisplayPort, which would nicely send video and audio to the dock. If you zoom in on the photo you can see (not very clearly, mind you) that the shape is like HDMI on the left and vertical on the right (looking from above as in the photo). This best matches DisplayPort IMHO.

Okay, thanks.

why?

Uh, not possible

why couldnt you write backup files to a blu ray? seriously?...
not the actual program...just the backup files...

so time machine could write to blue ray...well i dont think they would do it anyway since they seem to be moving away from disks just a comment :)

If you look closely you'll see the indentation on the lower left isn't really there; it's a reflection on the inside of the port. It's symmetrical.

Thanks for pointing that out. I zoomed in and yes it does look like a reflection. So it's symmetrical like on the bigger laptop. Is there a consensus about what this is? A redesigned dual-link mini-dvi?

Assuming that BluRay is closed after a writing session, what would not work is the incremental backup portion of the backup, i.e. the main distinguishing part of TimeMachine versus other backup solutions.

Ethernet versus FireWire poll still open (currently 57% prefer FireWire, but ultimately keeping both would be great ;-) )

I hope there is more to this because getting rid of dual link DVI and firewire ports on the Macbook Pro would be a step backwards unless Apple is officially retreating from the professional market. And there is some plausibility to that: The Pro apps don't get the attention they used to, and there have been rumors of Apple selling them off. More importantly, I've noticed that the Mac Pro, the flagship computer of Apple's lineup, is relegated to 1 or 2 display machines in the back corner of every Apple Store I've seen.

I hope I'm wrong and that firewire and DL-DVI are being preserved somehow, but those pics of the cases certainly don't seem to indicate that's going to happen.

I just read all 733 or whatever posts, and I think in my honest opinion about the ALLEGED (some people are forgetting that....) Photos...

- The covered port on the front left side with tape is an HDMI port or a card reader.

- The "UFH" (The Unidentified Front Hole) on the left is potentially the "sleeping" light. I can see Apple Designing the light there.

or possibly a battery eject button that isn't 'easy' to push, in other words, you'd use like a stylus or something to push the button.

- The right side optical drive: I like that idea, I'm not the biggest fan of where the drive is located on the current macbook pros it can be a pain while burning dvds and having to move the laptop sometimes just to be able to fit a cd/dvd in .

oh, and yeah the slot does look abnormally larger in the pictures.

also the infamous "goofy" shaped (possible video out) hole. It's definitely an optical allusion. It's a trapezoidal designed hole. not half trapezoid/half square. look at it closely and you can see the reflection of the pink bubble wrap.

This seems to put the rumors of a "glass" trackpad to rest. The size of those in the photos looks to be about the same size as the Macbook Air trackpad.

The only thing is, if you look at the trackpad slot for the Pro, it looks like there's some extra reinforcement.

if it is hdmi then blu ray is a go :)

That's like asking if you'd rather be without an arm or a leg. Audio users need both. FW for interfaces obviously. But to use Logic Pro's distributed processing you need gigabit ethernet. That's not going to work with a dongle.

Would people PLEASE look at the picture of the MBP before repeatedly making this statement? It would appear that there is both an ethernet port and a FW800 port. Considering the fact that Apple themselves make Logic Pro, and Final Cut Pro, I think it would be an absurd omission.

yup

It's probably too small for mini-dvi (current mini-dvi is 33% higher than USB port, and twice as high as a jack, while that one is barely as high as a usb port, unless the usb ports are freaky with some kind of huge padding it doesn't match), but a googling master uncovered documents talking of a mini-displayport created for apple by a chinese company, that might fit: displayport is compatible with dual-link dvi, so it would work out for the MBPs losing full-size DVI, and the suggested MCP7A platform has powerful enough integrated graphics abilities to handle it on the macbook (without the need for a discrete gpu).

Of course this is only speculation.

The firewire removal being discussed is that of the MacBook line, not of the MBP (also note that the MBP loses its FW400 port compared to the current line).

BTW the MBP FW port could also be an FW1600 or FW3200

The poll is about the MacBook, not the MacBook Pro.

it should be easy for apple to track down which employee/department/branch leaked these because of the barcodes and flawed ports from production models/samples. its not the final version.

It seems like if you don't want to know about upcoming Apple products, a site dedicated to rumors of new Apple products might be a bad place to spend your time. LOL

Looks great! Very thin. Glad they did away with the latch. ENOUGH LEAKS though I want a nice surprise on Tuesday...Let's Rock was very predictable and I hope this event doesn't turn out the same way. Apple needs to do a better job keeping everything secured. Back in the day we had no idea when and what would be announced and now it's just gotten ridiculous.

I so hope you're right.

Brilliant work, Apple. Take off DVI, forcing professionals to use a dongle to get any sort of video output from their machine

Iddddddddiots.

EDIT FOR CLARITY:

I don't mind adapters per se, AS LONG AS THEY ARE BASED ON STANDARD PORTS. Using in-house proprietary crap like "Mini-DVI" is inexcusable.

Yeah the MB looks to have ethernet but no firewire.
The MBP has ethernet and FW 800 (or 3200).

So both have ethernet. Neither seems to have FW 400, unless there are hidden connectors somewhere.

I'm still not sure if the magsafe fits in the small space clipped out of the MBP photo. Wonder where it is. On the back perhaps?
